Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a WordPress multisite network (the flaw affects multisite deployments only), and the attacker must already hold administrator privileges on at least one subsite (PR:H). A further concrete prerequisite from the description: the SMS Alert plugin's SMS gateway credentials must be configured and stored on the acting administrator's own site before the vulnerable billing-phone-number retrieval path can be reached. Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: no unauthenticated access is possible, single-site (non-multisite) installations are not affected, and the attacker needs an existing trusted administrator role - so this is realistically an insider or compromised-admin cross-tenant disclosure rather than remote unauthenticated exploitation.

Impact

This is a low-severity, low-priority issue despite the network attack vector. The NVD CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N = 2.7) tells a consistent story: exploitation requires an already-privileged actor (PR:H - a WordPress administrator), yields only limited confidentiality impact (C:L), and has no integrity or availability impact. The signals do not conflict, but several are simply absent: no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit were provided in the input, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The practical risk is further constrained by the description's two hard preconditions - the deployment must be a WordPress multisite network, and the plugin's gateway credentials must be stored on the acting administrator's own site - which make this a narrow, insider-style privilege/authorization boundary flaw (CWE-200, broken access control on user management) rather than a broadly exploitable remote bug. One nuance worth flagging: NVD scored this S:U (scope unchanged), but the vulnerability lets an administrator of one site read data belonging to users of *other* sites in the network, which is a cross-authority disclosure and is arguably a scope change (S:C); this does not materially raise priority but is noted below in the independent assessment. Bottom line: a genuine but minor information-disclosure flaw, appropriately patched, not an emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

In a WordPress multisite network, a malicious or curious administrator of one subsite - who has legitimately configured the SMS Alert plugin's gateway credentials on their own site - invokes the plugin's billing-phone-number retrieval functionality. Because the plugin never verifies that the acting administrator is authorized to manage the selected users, it returns the stored billing phone numbers of users belonging to other sites on the network, leaking PII across the tenant boundary. No public exploit identified at time of analysis; exploitation requires existing administrator access and the multisite precondition.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 08, 2026

Cross-site user data disclosure in the SMS Alert WordPress plugin before 4.0.1 allows an administrator of one subsite on a WordPress multisite network to retrieve stored billing phone numbers belonging to users of other subsites on that network. The flaw only affects multisite installations, and exploitation further requires the SMS Alert SMS gateway credentials to be configured and stored on the acting administrator's own site; the attacker must already hold administrator privileges on at least one subsite (CVSS vector PR:H, authenticated), so this is realistically a cross-tenant disclosure by a trusted or compromised admin rather than unauthenticated remote exploitation. Scoring is low (vendor score 2.7; our assessment is CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:N/A:N), no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and there is no indication of active exploitation (not in CISA KEV); patched plugin version 4.0.1 is available from the vendor.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade the SMS Alert plugin to version 4.0.1 or later - per the vendor/multi-source data, patch availability is confirmed and 4.0.1 is the first fixed release. Verification: after updating, confirm on a multisite network that an administrator of one subsite cannot retrieve billing phone numbers for users of another subsite (the plugin should enforce a capability check tied to the target users' site). If immediate upgrade is not possible, compensating controls must be applied with awareness of their trade-offs: (1) restrict the administrator role on subsites to a minimum set of trusted people and audit existing admins, since the exploit requires PR:H - this does not remove the flaw but reduces who can trigger it; (2) do not store the SMS Alert gateway credentials on subsites whose administrators are not fully trusted, because without locally stored credentials the vulnerable retrieval path is not reachable - the trade-off is that SMS sending from those subsites will stop working; (3) temporarily deactivate SMS Alert on subsites until patched, trading off all SMS notification functionality; and (4) monitor plugin/admin activity logs for unexpected bulk reads of user phone data, as the disclosure is otherwise silent. Primary advisory: https://wpscan.com/vulnerability/25af3225-3b4b-4882-9af8-ab24597f9be2/, with corroborating records at https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-94258 and https://vuldb.com/vuln/415276. Given the low severity and authenticated, multisite-only prerequisites, remediation can be scheduled as routine maintenance rather than emergency response.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The affected component is the SMS Alert WordPress plugin (a commercial SMS notification plugin for WooCommerce and WordPress), tracked by EUVD as EUVD-2026-94753 and by VulDB as 415276. The underlying weakness is CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor), rooted in a missing authorization/capability check: the vulnerable code path returns stored user billing phone numbers without verifying that the acting administrator is permitted to manage the selected users. In WordPress multisite (network) installations, user data belongs to individual subsites, so a site-level capability check - rather than a network-level one - allows an administrator of one subsite to enumerate users of other subsites. The prerequisite is that the plugin's SMS gateway credentials are stored on the acting administrator's own site, which is what makes the retrieval path reachable for that admin. Because the check is missing rather than bypassable, no authentication weakness is involved: the acting user is already a legitimate high-privileged administrator (PR:H). Confidentiality impact is limited to phone numbers (C:L) with no integrity or availability effect, and our assessment raises the scope to changed (S:C) because data owned by other subsites in the network is accessed, whereas the vendor score used S:U.

DescriptionCVE.org

The SMS Alert WordPress plugin before 4.0.1 does not check that the acting administrator is allowed to manage the selected users before returning their stored billing phone numbers, allowing an administrator of one site on a multisite network to disclose the phone numbers of users who belong to other sites on that network. This affects multisite only, and requires the SMS Alert WordPress plugin before 4.0.1's gateway credentials to be stored on the acting administrator's own site.
