| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires two concrete prerequisites drawn from the description: (1) the target must be running an ImageMagick build compiled WITHOUT Cairo support, which forces use of the vulnerable rsvg_handle_free code path in coders/svg.c; and (2) a specially crafted RSVG/SVG image must be processed that reaches an internal resource limit, which triggers the double-free followed by use-after-free. Limiting factors that reduce realistic risk: the non-Cairo build is not the configuration used by many mainstream distribution packages (so a large share of deployments are not on the vulnerable path), the resource limit must actually be hit, attack complexity is high (AC:H), and the only outcome is a process crash - there is no authentication requirement (PR:N) and no user interaction (UI:N), but also no confidentiality or integrity impact. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity denial-of-service issue (CVSS 5.9) with an availability-only impact - the CVSS vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H confirms no confidentiality or integrity loss (C:N/I:N) and only a process crash (A:H). The vector shows network reach (AV:N) and no authentication (PR:N/UI:N), which raises exposure, but high attack complexity (AC:H) materially lowers real-world risk because exploitation requires a specific non-default build condition (ImageMagick compiled WITHOUT Cairo support) plus the crafted RSVG image reaching a resource limit. Exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - this CVE is NOT in CISA KEV and no public POC was supplied. No EPSS score was provided in the input, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified; this is a MISSING signal and should not be assumed low or high. No SSVC decision data was provided. Net: this is a real but low-urgency bug - a CWE-415 double-free leading to use-after-free that crashes the process, not code execution - and should be patched on normal cadence rather than treated as an emergency, especially since many distributions build ImageMagick WITH Cairo and are therefore not on the vulnerable code path. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker uploads or submits a crafted RSVG/SVG image to a service that uses an ImageMagick build compiled without Cairo support; during decoding the image hits a resource limit, causing the RSVG decoder to free the SVG handle twice and then access freed memory, crashing the worker process and denying service. No public exploit code was identified at the time of analysis, and because attack complexity is high (specific build configuration plus a triggered resource limit), reliable exploitation is non-trivial. The impact is limited to a crash - there is no evidence of code execution or data exposure. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026
A crafted RSVG/SVG image can crash ImageMagick builds that lack Cairo support by forcing the RSVG decoder to free image state twice and then operate on freed memory (CWE-415 double free), yielding an availability-only denial of service rated CVSS 5.9 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H). The flaw affects ImageMagick versions prior to 7.1.2-30 and 6.9.13-55 and is reachable by unauthenticated remote attackers who can get the application to process a malicious image, though exploitation requires the target to be a non-Cairo build and the image must actually trip an internal resource limit. Vendor fixes are published for both the 7.x and 6.x lines; no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to ImageMagick 7.1.2-30 or later on the 7.x line, or to 6.9.13-55 or later on the 6.x line; both releases are linked from the advisory at https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick/security/advisories/GHSA-f2r2-qw7g-3c8x, and the underlying code changes are the commits https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick/commit/326451aae51ac2dabc99fe66e063de6ec14cf8c8 (7.x) and https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick6/commit/04a4c5b89c034cf2c93bb0a10044332d941b4fa5 (6.x), which replace the incorrect rsvg_handle_free() call with g_object_unref(). If upgrading is delayed, the most direct compensating control is to rebuild or reconfigure ImageMagick with Cairo support, which moves SVG decoding off the vulnerable non-Cairo RSVG code path - the trade-off is a changed dependency footprint and potentially different rendering output for SVG inputs. As a narrower workaround, remove SVG/RSVG from the enabled coder list (for example via a policy.xml entry disabling the SVG/MSVG/RSVG delegates) or strip the SVG delegate from delegates.xml so that untrusted SVG input is rejected outright; this prevents the crash but breaks legitimate SVG processing and must be verified against each application's format requirements. Because exploitation requires the crafted image to hit an internal resource limit, lowering per-image resource limits (memory, width/height, area, time) and running image conversion with strict CPU/memory cgroups can reduce the chance that the limit path is reached and contain the crash to a single worker, at the cost of rejecting some legitimate large images. Input validation that blocks untrusted SVG uploads to image-processing pipelines, and isolating ImageMagick invocations in throwaway sandboxes or low-privilege workers, further limits the DoS blast radius. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, but the fix should still be prioritized for internet-facing image-processing services that use non-Cairo builds.

Technical ContextAI · show details
ImageMagick's SVG handling lives in coders/svg.c, where the RSVG rendering path (RenderRSVGImage) uses the librsvg library rather than ImageMagick's internal MSVG parser. When ImageMagick is compiled without Cairo support, this RSVG path is the one taken for SVG input. The root cause is resource-handling error class CWE-415 (double free): on an error/limit path, the decoder releases the librsvg handle with rsvg_handle_free() even though librsvg handles are GObjects whose lifetime must be managed through the GObject reference-counting API (g_object_unref), and the surrounding conditional compilation (#endif/#else) is also misarranged. The upstream patch in both ImageMagick 7 (commit 326451aae51ac2dabc99fe66e063de6ec14cf8c8) and ImageMagick 6 (commit 04a4c5b89c034cf2c93bb0a10044332d941b4fa5) simply replaces rsvg_handle_free(svg_handle) with g_object_unref(svg_handle) and corrects the preprocessor structure, so the handle is torn down exactly once via the correct reference-counted mechanism. Because the corrupted state is then reused (use-after-free following the double free), the observable effect is memory corruption leading to process termination. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:imagemagick:imagemagick:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms all previously released ImageMagick builds are in scope pending version comparison, and the assigned tags (Denial Of Service, ImageMagick) align with the availability-only impact.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
ImageMagick is free and open-source software used for editing and manipulating digital images. Prior to 7.1.2-30 and 6.9.13-55, when ImageMagick is built without Cairo support, a crafted RSVG image that reaches a resource limit can cause the RSVG decoder to free image state twice and then use freed memory, crashing the process. This issue is fixed in versions 7.1.2-30 and 6.9.13-55.
