MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the target host is actively running the ImageMagick distributed pixel cache server (the DPC feature in MagickCore/distribute-cache.c), which is NOT part of default ImageMagick usage and must be explicitly deployed for distributed/multi-node image processing. The attacker must also have adjacent-network reachability to the DPC listening socket (AV:A) - remote internet-wide exploitation is not indicated. The limiting factors are therefore: the DPC server must be enabled and network-exposed, and the attacker must be on the same local network segment; no authentication is needed (PR:N) and no user interaction is required (UI:N). Impact is confined to availability of the cache service (A:L), with no data disclosure or modification. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but low-priority issue, consistent across all available signals. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:A/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L, base 4.3 Medium) describes an unauthenticated, low-complexity attack limited to an adjacent network with only a low availability impact and no confidentiality or integrity effect - matching the CWE-400 resource-exhaustion description exactly. No EPSS score was supplied, and there is no CISA KEV listing and no public proof-of-concept in the provided data, so exploitation is neither confirmed nor demonstrated. Crucially, the attack targets ImageMagick's distributed pixel cache (DPC) server, a non-default component that must be explicitly started, so the real-world attack surface is far narrower than the ubiquity of ImageMagick itself would suggest. The AV:A (adjacent) restriction further means an attacker must already be on the same network segment as the DPC server, which is the signal that keeps real risk low despite the unauthenticated, low-complexity nature of the flaw. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker positioned on the same local/adjacent network as a host running the ImageMagick distributed pixel cache server repeatedly opens TCP connections to the DPC listener without completing or closing them, exhausting the server's available connection/worker slots. Legitimate ImageMagick nodes can then no longer reach the cache server, degrading or halting distributed image processing. No public exploit code is identified in the provided data; the fix adds receive timeouts and an authentication read deadline so stalled or slow clients no longer hold connections indefinitely. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026
Denial of service in ImageMagick's distributed pixel cache (DPC) server before 7.1.2-32 allows an unauthenticated attacker on the same network segment to repeatedly open connections to the DPC listening socket and exhaust its available connection slots, degrading or halting distributed cache service on the host. The issue is limited to deployments that have explicitly enabled and network-exposed the DPC server - it is not part of default ImageMagick usage - and the assessed impact is availability-only (CVSS 3.1: AV:A/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L, score 4.3); no data disclosure or modification is possible. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the flaw is not listed as confirmed actively exploited (CISA KEV), while the vendor-released fix is available in ImageMagick 7.1.2-32.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to ImageMagick 7.1.2-32 (https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick/releases/tag/7.1.2-32), which contains commit cafc7372c8113a9636766f0eddde7b90373c9b44 adding SO_RCVTIMEO-based receive deadlines and proper ECONNRESET/transient-error handling in MagickCore/distribute-cache.c; see the advisory at https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick/security/advisories/GHSA-2vwg-3g4g-qprm. If immediate upgrading is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to avoid running the DPC server: do not enable the distributed pixel cache, or stop the magick/distribute-cache listener on hosts that do not require distributed processing - the trade-off is loss of multi-node rendering performance for large image workloads. Where the DPC service is genuinely needed, restrict it to the peer nodes that require it using host firewalling or bind the listener to a dedicated internal interface instead of a broadly reachable one, accepting that misconfigured ACLs will break node-to-node cache traffic. Additional hardening includes capping per-host connection counts at the OS level (e.g. conntrack/iptables connlimit rules on the DPC port), which throttles the attack but does not prevent slot exhaustion from legitimized clients, and monitoring for repeated short-lived connections to the DPC port as a detection signal. Note that CVSS impact is availability-only and low (A:L); no confidentiality or integrity controls are required.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability resides in ImageMagick's distributed pixel cache implementation (MagickCore/distribute-cache.c), classified as CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption). When ImageMagick is configured in a multi-node/distributed rendering setup, the DPC server accepts TCP connections from peer workers and exchanges cache metacontent and pixel data over them. Prior to the fix, the receive path (dpc_read) looped on recv() without enforcing a receive timeout and did not cleanly distinguish connection-reset and transient-error conditions, so a client that repeatedly connects - or connects and stalls - could hold connection slots open and exhaust the server's available connections. The upstream commit (cafc7372c8113a9636766f0eddde7b90373c9b44) renames the routine to dpc_receive, adds a deadline-aware variant dpc_receive_deadline that applies SO_RCVTIMEO via setsockopt (with Windows SO_RCVTIMEO/WSA equivalents) so authentication reads cannot block indefinitely, and adds explicit handling for ECONNRESET/EAGAIN/EINTR error codes (returning -2 for reset) so sockets are released rather than leaked. Minor integer-cast fixes accompany the change. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:imagemagick:imagemagick:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, i.e. all ImageMagick versions below the 7.1.2-32 release tag.

DPC server listens on a network socket reachable without auth (PR:N, AC:L) but realistically only adjacent (AV:A); connection exhaustion yields partial availability loss only (A:L, C:N/I:N).

2DescriptionCVE.org
ImageMagick is free and open-source software used for editing and manipulating digital images. Prior to 7.1.2-32, an unauthenticated adjacent-network client can repeatedly connect to the distributed pixel cache server and exhaust its available connections, causing denial of service. This issue is fixed in version 7.1.2-32.
