MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated Elasticsearch user holding the manage_index_templates cluster privilege; without that privilege the attack cannot be performed. The attacker must register multiple index-template resources, each populated with a metadata field sized near the enforced per-resource limit, and then trigger a combined retrieval that materializes all metadata values in heap simultaneously. The flaw exists in default behavior for anyone with that privilege (no special non-default configuration is needed), but the privilege requirement itself is the primary limiting factor, restricting the attack to trusted operators, service accounts, or compromised privileged credentials rather than anonymous remote attackers; impact is limited to availability (node OOM) with no confidentiality or integrity effect. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity, availability-only denial-of-service issue, and the signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The CVSS vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, score 6.5) correctly reflects a network-reachable, low-complexity attack that requires an authenticated account (PR:L) holding the specific manage_index_templates cluster privilege, with impact confined to availability (A:H; C:N/I:N - no data exposure or tampering). No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or POC was provided in the input, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation; the realistic risk is therefore 'elevated but not emergency.' The key limiting factor is the privilege requirement: manage_index_templates is a meaningful, non-default cluster privilege typically held only by trusted operators or integrations, which sharply reduces the population of potential attackers compared to a PR:N flaw. This is better characterized as an abuse-of-privilege / insider-or-compromised-credential risk than a broadly exploitable remote vulnerability. The absence of EPSS/KEV/POC data is a gap, not a contradiction - it should be interpreted as 'no exploitation evidence available' rather than 'confirmed low risk.' |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has obtained an Elasticsearch account with the manage_index_templates cluster privilege (e.g. via a compromised operator credential or an over-privileged integration) registers many template resources, each carrying a metadata field just under the per-resource size limit. They then issue a single request to retrieve all templates together, forcing the node to materialize every metadata value in memory simultaneously, exhausting the JVM heap and crashing the node with an out-of-memory error. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the attack requires valid privileged credentials rather than anonymous access. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 06, 2026
Denial of service in Elasticsearch allows authenticated users holding the manage_index_templates cluster privilege to exhaust node heap by registering multiple index-template resources with metadata near the per-resource size limit and then triggering a combined retrieval that materializes all metadata in memory simultaneously. Affected versions include Elasticsearch releases prior to 9.4.7, 9.5.3, and 8.19.23, as addressed in ESA-2026-192. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and exploitation requires the specified privilege, limiting the attack to trusted operators or compromised privileged accounts.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Elasticsearch 9.4.7, 9.5.3, or 8.19.23 as per ESA-2026-192. Until patching is possible, restrict the manage_index_templates cluster privilege to only trusted users and service accounts, as the attack requires this privilege. Audit existing index templates for oversized metadata fields and consider removing or reducing unnecessary templates. Monitor node heap usage for signs of abnormal growth. Because the flaw is in default behavior, no configuration-based workaround fully mitigates the issue without the patch; however, limiting privileged access reduces exposure. Refer to the vendor advisory at https://discuss.elastic.co/t/elasticsearch-9-4-7-9-5-3-8-19-23-security-update-esa-2026-192/390865 for further details.

The vulnerability is an instance of CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling), which occurs when a system does not properly restrict the amount of resources it allocates in response to user-controlled input. In Elasticsearch, index templates include a user-supplied metadata field that is subject to a per-resource size limit. However, when multiple such templates are retrieved together (e.g., via a combined API call), the system materializes all metadata values into memory at once without an aggregate limit. This can lead to excessive heap consumption, causing an out-of-memory error and node failure. The attack leverages CAPEC-130 (Excessive Allocation) and requires the manage_index_templates cluster privilege. The issue affects default configurations; no special non-default settings are needed beyond the privilege. The CVSS vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H indicates a network-accessible, low-complexity attack requiring low privileges, with high availability impact but no confidentiality or integrity impact.

DescriptionCVE.org
Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling (CWE-770) in Elasticsearch can lead to Denial of Service via Excessive Allocation (CAPEC-130). Elasticsearch enforces a size limit on the user-supplied metadata field for each individual template resource, but does not limit the total memory used when multiple such resources are retrieved together. A user holding the *manage_index_templates* cluster privilege can register multiple resources each within the individual limit. Retrieving them together materializes all of their metadata values in memory at once, exhausting available heap and causing the affected node to fail with an out-of-memory error, resulting in a denial of service.
