MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated Elasticsearch account that already holds sufficient privileges over at least one resource (PR:L); a fully unauthorized or anonymous attacker cannot trigger it. The specific vector is the Modify Data Streams API, which fails to properly constrain which data streams the caller may alter, allowing modification of a data stream outside the user's authorized scope. Limiting factors: the flaw grants only write/modify capability (injecting data or affecting searchability) and explicitly does NOT permit reading the target stream's contents; impact is therefore confined to integrity and availability of data streams. Only running versions in the affected ranges (7.17.5-7.17.29, 8.2.2-8.19.18, 9.0.0-9.3.7, 9.4.0-9.4.3) are vulnerable. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity authorization flaw rather than a high-priority emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N) indicates network-reachable, low-complexity exploitation, but PR:L means a pre-authenticated user with existing legitimate privileges over at least one resource is required - this is a privilege-boundary violation, not an open remote exploit. Impact is deliberately constrained: C:N (the vendor explicitly states no unauthorized data can be read), with only I:L (data injection/modification into a data stream) and A:L (degraded searchability), yielding the 5.4 (Medium) score. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the input, so there is no signal of active or probable exploitation; absence of these is not proof of safety but does not elevate priority. The signals are internally consistent - there is no network-vs-local conflict here - so this reads as a genuine-but-contained insider/authorized-user authorization issue, appropriate for routine patch-cycle remediation rather than emergency response. Teams running multi-tenant or least-privilege Elasticsearch clusters where users are granted scoped access should prioritize higher than single-tenant deployments where all users are already trusted. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated Elasticsearch user who holds sufficient privileges over a single resource calls the Modify Data Streams API and manipulates a data stream they were never granted access to, injecting spurious documents or impairing its searchability. No user interaction or additional authentication is needed beyond the attacker's existing account, but they cannot read the target data stream's contents. No public exploit code was identified in the provided data. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 06, 2026
Unauthorized data stream modification in Elasticsearch allows an authenticated user who holds privileges over only a single resource to alter data streams outside their authorized scope through the Modify Data Streams API, enabling data injection into those streams or degrading their searchability. The flaw is rated CVSS 5.4 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:L) and is confined to integrity and availability - it explicitly does not let the attacker read a data stream they could not already access. Only deployments running 7.17.5-7.17.29, 8.2.2-8.19.18, 9.0.0-9.3.7, or 9.4.0-9.4.3 are affected, and there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis; the vendor security update (ESA-2026-188) points to fixed releases 8.19.19, 9.3.8, and 9.4.4.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Elasticsearch 8.19.19 (8.x line), 9.3.8 (9.0-9.3 line), or 9.4.4 (9.4 line) as described in Elastic security update ESA-2026-188 (https://discuss.elastic.co/t/elasticsearch-8-19-19-9-3-8-9-4-4-security-update-esa-2026-188/390861); older 7.17.x deployments in the affected range should be migrated to a supported patched line, since no 7.17.x fix is named in the advisory. If immediate upgrade is not possible, compensate by tightening authorization rather than relying on network controls: audit roles and API keys for broad or wildcard data stream / index privileges and the manage_data_stream, manage, or lifecycle-management cluster privileges, and scope each principal to the explicit data streams and backing indices it actually needs - the trade-off is that legitimate automation, ILM policies, and rollover jobs using wildcard grants will start failing with 403 responses and must be re-scoped individually. As a further stopgap, restrict which accounts may call the Modify Data Streams API (for example by withholding the relevant manage privileges from non-administrative roles and rotating any API keys that carry them), accepting that this can break cross-team stream provisioning and must be coordinated with stream owners. Monitor Elasticsearch audit logs for Modify Data Streams requests originating from users whose granted privileges do not include the targeted stream, as that pattern is the clearest indicator of exploitation.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization), mapped by the reporter to CAPEC-1 (Accessing Functionality Not Properly Constrained by ACLs). Elasticsearch data streams are write-optimized, append-only abstractions layered over a sequence of backing indices; lifecycle operations such as rollover, adding or removing backing indices, and generation management are performed through the Modify Data Streams API. Because that API did not properly constrain its authorization check to the specific data stream named in the request, a caller who legitimately holds sufficient privileges over any one resource could reach a data stream outside their granted scope - a horizontal authorization boundary failure typical of object-reference checks that validate the user rather than the target resource. The consequence is limited to write/modify semantics: an attacker can inject documents into the target stream or disrupt how it is searched, but the missing check does not expose read access to the stream's contents, which is why the CVSS impact sub-score is C:N with only low integrity and availability impact. The flaw affects the server-side authorization layer and is version-bound to the four affected ranges listed in the EUVD entry.

DescriptionCVE.org
Incorrect Authorization (CWE-863) in Elasticsearch can lead to unauthorized data stream modification via Accessing Functionality Not Properly Constrained by ACLs (CAPEC-1). An authenticated user with sufficient privileges over a single resource could use the Modify Data Streams API to modify a data stream to which they were not otherwise authorized, potentially injecting data into it or affecting its ability to be searched normally. This issue does not allow an attacker to read the contents of a data stream they do not otherwise have access to.
