| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the Dell CSM Authorization module be deployed and that its csm-authorization-storage gRPC server be network-reachable from the attacker; one or more storage arrays must be registered so that administrator credentials exist to steal. No authentication, user interaction, or special privileges are needed (PR:N/UI:N), and default-configured deployments of the authorization module are affected. The primary limiting factors are therefore environmental: the optional Authorization module must be in use, the gRPC port must be exposed to the attacker's network position, and arrays must already be onboarded - segmentation of the gRPC service from untrusted networks meaningfully reduces exposure. |
| Impact | This is a genuine top-priority vulnerability, not a high-CVSS-but-low-risk paper cut. The Dell-supplied CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H = 10.0) describes a maximally severe case: network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated (PR:N), no user interaction, with a scope change because exploitation leaks credentials for separate security authorities (the storage arrays). CWE-306 (Missing Authentication for Critical Function) is consistent with the description and with the PR:N rating - the gRPC server simply fails to authenticate callers. The real amplifier is impact: a single unauthenticated request exposes storage backend administrator credentials for ALL registered arrays, so the I:H/A:H ratings are driven by downstream credential abuse rather than a direct write primitive. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC is present in the provided data, so there is NO evidence of active exploitation yet - exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The signals are therefore internally consistent (vendor CVSS aligns with the description) but incomplete on the exploitation-likelihood axis: severity and exploitability are near-maximal, while real-world weaponization is unmeasured. Treat as urgent to patch given the trivial exploitation path and critical blast radius, while noting that widespread automated exploitation has not been demonstrated in the supplied intelligence. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker with network reach to a Kubernetes cluster running the Dell CSM Authorization module connects directly to the csm-authorization-storage gRPC endpoint and issues requests without any credentials. Because authentication is missing entirely, the server returns the stored administrator credentials for every registered storage array, which the attacker then reuses to take full administrative control of the backend storage. No public exploit was identified in the provided data, but the low complexity and lack of authentication make a working exploit trivial to develop. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 06, 2026
Unauthenticated remote credential theft in the Dell Container Storage Modules (CSM) Authorization component before v1.18.0 allows any attacker who can reach the csm-authorization-storage gRPC service to retrieve the storage-backend administrator credentials for every registered storage array, turning a single unauthenticated request path into full administrative control of the underlying storage infrastructure. The defect is a missing-authentication error (CWE-306) in a critical function and carries a CVSS 3.1 score of 10.0 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H), with the scope change reflecting the pivot from the CSM authorization service into the storage arrays themselves. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV; the principal gating factors are environmental - the optional Authorization module must be deployed, its gRPC endpoint must be reachable from the attacker's network position, and at least one array must already be onboarded so that credentials exist to steal - which is why Dell's DSA-2026-448 advisory and the availability of a fixed release make this a genuine top-priority item rather than a theoretical high-CVSS score.
RemediationAI
Dell addressed this issue with the release of CSM v1.18.0, so the primary remediation is to upgrade the CSM Authorization module - and the surrounding CSM components - to v1.18.0 or later per DSA-2026-448 (https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000515771/dsa-2026-448-security-update-for-dell-container-storage-modules-multiple-vulnerabilities). Because the flaw allows unauthenticated read access to storage-backend administrator credentials, upgrading alone must be paired with credential rotation: treat every registered array's administrator credentials as compromised and rotate them after the upgrade, then audit array and CSM authorization logs for unexpected gRPC calls, credential retrievals, or configuration changes during the exposure window. Where upgrading cannot be done immediately, the effective compensating control is network isolation of the csm-authorization-storage gRPC service: place it behind a firewall or network policy so that only trusted CSM and Kubernetes components can reach its listener, and avoid publishing that port on management, corporate, or otherwise untrusted networks - the trade-off is that overly tight segmentation can break legitimate CSI provisioning until the allowed source ranges are tuned. If the Authorization module is not actively required, uninstalling or disabling it removes the attack surface entirely, at the cost of losing the RBAC layer it provides. Deploying mutual TLS or an authenticating proxy in front of the gRPC endpoint can reduce exposure but should be validated against the specific CSM version in use and treated as a stopgap, not a substitute for v1.18.0.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Dell Container Storage Modules (CSM) is a suite of Kubernetes-native modules that expose enterprise storage arrays (PowerFlex, PowerStore, PowerScale, Unity XT and others) to container workloads via CSI drivers and supporting services. Within that suite, the CSM Authorization module implements role-based access control between Kubernetes workloads and the storage backends, and it runs a component called csm-authorization-storage - a gRPC server that brokers array credentials and authorization decisions. The vulnerability is CWE-306, Missing Authentication for Critical Function: the gRPC server does not enforce authentication on the operations that expose or provision storage-backend administrator credentials, so the interface can be driven directly by an unauthenticated caller. Because gRPC is a binary, HTTP/2-based protocol that is frequently exposed on cluster or management networks for internal service-to-service traffic, the missing check is not obscured by protocol complexity - a reachable listener is sufficient. The CPE entry cpe:2.3:a:dell:dell_container_storage_modules_(csm):*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* identifies the affected product family without version pinning in the CPE itself; the authoritative version boundary comes from Dell's advisory, which states that releases prior to v1.18.0 are vulnerable. The scope-changing (S:C) CVSS metric is appropriate because successful exploitation compromises resources beyond the vulnerable component: the credentials obtained belong to the storage arrays, not to CSM, and they grant control of the data plane those arrays serve.

Dell Container Storage Modules (CSM), versions prior to v1.18.0, contains a Missing Authentication for Critical Function vulnerability in the csm-authorization-storage gRPC server. An unauthenticated remote attacker could potentially exploit this vulnerability, leading to unauthorized access to storage backend administrator credentials for all registered storage arrays.
Articles & Coverage 1
Executive ViewAI
Dell's Container Storage Modules (CSM) Authorization component can hand an attacker the administrator credentials for every registered storage array, meaning one unauthenticated request to a reachable gRPC endpoint could translate into full control of the organization's underlying storage infrastructure and the data on it. The exposure is unauthenticated (CVSS vector PR:N) and rated 10.0, but it is gated by environment: the optional Authorization module must be deployed, its csm-authorization-storage gRPC service must be network-reachable, and at least one array must be registered. No vendor-released patch is identified at time of analysis and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, so leadership should treat this as a containment problem - the affected blast radius is every Kubernetes environment where the module is reachable and every storage array it manages.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: block external and cross-namespace reachability to the csm-authorization-storage gRPC endpoint via firewall rules, Kubernetes NetworkPolicy, or service mesh policy limited to trusted management hosts; disable or uninstall the optional Authorization module where it is not operationally required; enforce mutual TLS and authentication at the ingress to the gRPC service; rotate storage-backend administrator credentials for all registered arrays and monitor arrays for unauthorized administrative actions; enable and review audit logging on the CSM Authorization service and on the storage arrays to detect anomalous credential-retrieval or configuration requests.
