Vulnerability Assessment
| Exploitation Conditions | The affected host must have a netfilter/nftables flowtable configured (the software/hardware fastpath that offloads established connections), because the bug lives in the flowtable's handling of conntrack references - it is not present on systems not using flowtable offload. The CVSS vector (AV:L/PR:L) means a local, authenticated low-privileged user is required; it is not remotely reachable without a foothold. Exploitation is further limited by being a race condition against the RCU grace period (the flowtable must hold a reference to a conntrack whose ext area is freed), so reliable triggering requires winning a timing window, and the host must be running an unpatched kernel in the listed ranges (e.g. before 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 5.10.271, 5.15.222, etc.). |
| Impact | This is a use-after-free in the Linux kernel netfilter flowtable datapath: nf_ct_put() frees the conntrack ext area immediately while the flowtable can still reference the (wrong) conntrack through RCU-typesafe semantics. The supplied CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, 7.8 HIGH) indicates a local, low-privilege attacker with full C/I/A impact - consistent with kernel memory corruption. However, the real-world exploitation signals are notably low: EPSS is 0.22% (11th percentile), the issue is NOT in CISA KEV, and no POC is referenced in the provided data. Exploitation status: no public exploit identified at time of analysis. There is tension between the HIGH CVSS and the low EPSS/absence of KEV - this is characteristic of a serious-but-not-yet-weaponized kernel race that requires local access and a specific netfilter configuration, rather than a mass-exploited, remotely reachable bug. One signal conflict to flag explicitly: the input Tags label this 'Information Disclosure', but the technical nature (use-after-free referencing freed conntrack ext) and the C:H/I:H/A:H vector imply impact well beyond disclosure, including potential privilege escalation or kernel compromise. Overall: a legitimate patch-worthy local-escalation-class issue, but a moderate operational priority absent evidence of active exploitation. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A local, low-privileged user on a host that uses an nftables flowtable (software fastpath) sets up and tears down network flows to race conntrack teardown against the flowtable's RCU reference, triggering access to a freed conntrack extension. By grooming kernel memory to control the freed object, the attacker leverages the use-after-free to leak kernel memory or corrupt state for privilege escalation. No public exploit code is referenced in the provided data, and exploitation requires winning an RCU-timed race. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026
Use-after-free in the Linux kernel netfilter flowtable datapath allows a local, authenticated low-privileged user to potentially execute code, corrupt memory, or disclose information by winning a race condition against the RCU grace period. Affected are unpatched kernels in the 5.10.x, 5.15.x, 6.1.x, 6.6.x, 6.12.x, 7.2.x, 7.3-rc, and 6.18.x ranges before their respective fixes; systems without a configured netfilter flowtable offload are not exposed. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the EPSS score is 0.22% (11th percentile), indicating low predicted exploitation activity; vendor patches are available.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: 5.10.271, 5.15.222, 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 7.2.8, 6.18.54, and 7.3-rc4. Apply by upgrading to the fixed kernel version for your stable branch; patches are available from the upstream stable commits listed in the references (e.g., https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/93ff1594be1aad4da364462dd8db050ebcfda2de). If immediate patching is not possible, as a compensating control you can disable the netfilter flowtable offload (e.g., by removing flowtable rules from nftables or not using the 'flow add @ft' statement), since only systems with a configured flowtable are vulnerable; this eliminates the attack vector at the cost of losing performance benefits from established-connection offload. Restricting local user access to only trusted accounts reduces the attack surface but does not eliminate the race condition. There is no evidence of active exploitation, but the use-after-free carries high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact if successfully triggered.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability resides in the netfilter flowtable, the Linux kernel subsystem that offloads established connections to a software or hardware fastpath. When a flow is established, the flowtable holds a reference to the associated conntrack entry; the bug is that nf_ct_put() frees the conntrack's extension area (ct->ext) immediately, while RCU-typesafe semantics can still lead the flowtable datapath to refer to the wrong conntrack after the grace period. This use-after-free (CWE-416 class) is triggered by a race condition, meaning an attacker must win a timing window. The fix holds a reference on the conntrack until the flow is released after an RCU grace period and adds rcu_barrier() on the module exit path to ensure pending flow entries are released before the module is unloaded. The assessed CVSS vector is AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H: local, authenticated, low-privileged access with high attack complexity due to the race. CPE data identifies the affected product as cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*.

AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H
Local low-priv access (AV:L/PR:L) is required and the flaw is an RCU-timed use-after-free race, so AC:H; successful UAF of a kernel object yields full C:H/I:H/A:H.

Lifecycle Timeline
4DescriptionCVE.org
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
netfilter: flowtable: hold reference on ct until flow is released
nf_ct_put() releases the ct->ext area inmediately, the rcu typesafe semantics also allow to refer to the wrong conntrack from the flowtable datapath. Hold reference on ct until flow is released after rcu grace period.
Add rcu_barrier() on module exit path, to ensure pending flow entries are release before module goes away.
Executive ViewAI
A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's netfilter flowtable datapath (CVE-2026-98320) could allow a local low-privileged user to execute code, corrupt memory, or disclose information on affected systems. Organizations running unpatched Linux kernels with netfilter flowtable offload enabled are at risk, though exploitation requires local access and a race condition. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and patch available per vendor advisory.
Apply vendor patch.
