| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the victim zebrad node (before 6.3.0) to be actively downloading blocks via the sync path - i.e. during initial sync or while catching up to the tip - and to have the attacker present as a serving peer in its peer set; no authentication, user interaction, or non-default configuration is needed. The specific trigger is a peer returning a canonical block whose coinbase scriptSig is rewritten to claim height 1 while keeping the requested hash, abusing that V5 transaction IDs exclude the scriptSig. Limiting factors: the attacker must be an accepted block-supplying peer, and the impact is confined to delayed discovery of the newest block (no code execution, no data compromise, no persistent crash), bounding real-world severity below the raw CVSS score. |
| Impact | This is a denial-of-service/sync-integrity flaw in the Zebra (zebrad) Zcash node, scored CVSS 4.0 8.7 (High) with vector AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N and impact confined to availability (VA:H; VC:N/VI:N), consistent with CWE-345 (insufficient verification of data authenticity). The network/no-auth/no-UI/low-complexity vector means any connected peer can trigger it, which raises the paper severity, but the real-world impact is bounded: the attacker only delays the victim node's discovery of the newest block by replaying a canonical block whose coinbase scriptSig falsely claims height 1 (V5 txids exclude the scriptSig, so the hash still matches). This is not RCE, data theft, or a hard crash - it degrades sync timeliness. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no SSVC decision data were provided, and no public exploit is referenced, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Net: a legitimate correctness/robustness bug worth patching for node operators, but not a drop-everything emergency - the VA:H rating appears generous for what is effectively a sync-delay condition rather than a full availability outage (verify impact severity with the vendor advisory). |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A malicious peer in the victim zebrad node's peer set responds to block-download requests with a canonical block whose coinbase scriptSig has been rewritten to claim height 1, while preserving the requested block hash. Because Zebra reads the height from the unvalidated scriptSig and drops blocks that appear far behind the tip before consensus validation - without penalizing the peer - the attacker can repeatedly stall the node's progress toward the chain tip. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 02, 2026
Block-sync denial of service in Zebra (zebrad), the Rust implementation of a Zcash full node, affects all versions before 6.3.0. During block download, a malicious peer can repeatedly serve a canonical block whose coinbase scriptSig is rewritten to claim height 1 while preserving the requested block hash - an evasion made possible because V5 transaction IDs exclude the scriptSig - causing the node to discard the block as too far behind the tip and repeatedly refetch it instead of advancing to the newest chain tip. The attacker remains unauthenticated (CVSS vector PR:N) and must simply be an accepted block-supplying peer; the flaw is an insufficient verification of data authenticity issue (CWE-345) whose impact our assessment bounds to availability only (VA:H in the CVE 4.0 score, but no confidentiality or integrity loss), so real-world severity is a sync delay rather than node compromise. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and the issue is not confirmed actively exploited (CISA KEV).
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: 6.3.0 - upgrade Zebra (zebrad) to 6.3.0 or later, which introduces proper validation/handling of the coinbase-declared height in the block sync path so that a block can no longer be discarded based on an unvalidated scriptSig; consult the vendor advisory at https://github.com/ZcashFoundation/zebra/security/advisories/GHSA-g95h-hw6g-pvgv for the exact release guidance and the corresponding third-party analysis at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/zebra-before-6.3.0-block-sync-denial-of-service-via-coinbase-scriptsig-rewrite. Until upgrade is possible, restrict the node's block-supplying peer set to trusted or operator-controlled peers and, where the deployment supports it, reduce outbound/peer connection scope so an untrusted peer cannot repeatedly monopolize the sync download path - accepting the trade-off that a tightly curated peer set weakens network resilience and can itself slow sync if the trusted peers are unhealthy; monitor sync progress and peer behavior for repeated re-download of the same block hash as an indicator of exploitation, and prefer restarting sync from a known-good peer if a stall is observed. Note that because the impact is bounded to delayed tip discovery - no code execution, data compromise, or persistent crash - patching to 6.3.0 is the only complete fix, and no configuration flag alone has been documented as fully preventing the rewrite.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Zebra is the Zcash Foundation's Rust full-node implementation. Its block sync download path performs a heuristic tip-distance check based on the height embedded in a block's coinbase scriptSig before that block is subjected to full consensus validation. Because this field is attacker-controlled and unauthenticated, the check violates the data-authenticity assumptions that CWE-345 describes: the software accepts a self-declared value as though it were verified. The mechanism hinges on Zcash's V5 transaction format (introduced with NU5), in which the transaction ID is computed over the transaction without the scriptSig. As a result, a peer can change the coinbase scriptSig - making the block appear to claim height 1 - while the block's hash and therefore the identity of the requested object stay the same. Nodes that drop such a block as 'too far behind the tip' and do not down-score or disconnect the supplying peer will keep re-requesting the same hash from the same dishonest peer, starving the sync loop and preventing timely discovery of the newest block. The affected package is identified as cpe:2.3:a:zcashfoundation:zebra:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, i.e., Zebra releases from 0 up to but not including 6.3.0, per the ENISA EUVD entry EUVD-2026-91433.

2DescriptionCVE.org
The block sync download path in Zebra (zebrad) before 6.3.0 reads a block's height from its unvalidated coinbase scriptSig and drops blocks that appear too far behind the tip before consensus validation, without penalizing the supplying peer. Because V5 transaction IDs exclude the scriptSig, a malicious peer can repeatedly serve a canonical block whose coinbase claims height 1 while keeping the requested hash, delaying the node's discovery of the newest block.

Executive ViewAI
A denial-of-service flaw in Zebra (zebrad), the Rust Zcash full node implementation, allows any peer a node connects to for block download to stall synchronization indefinitely by repeatedly serving a malformed block that the node re-requests instead of advancing to the current chain tip. All node operators running versions prior to 6.3.0 are affected, and the impact is confined to availability - delayed or halted chain synchronization - with no loss of confidentiality or integrity of wallet, key, or ledger data. Leadership should care because prolonged sync stalls can disrupt transaction validation, downstream services, and any business process or customer-facing capability that depends on an up-to-date Zcash view of the chain, even though the vulnerability cannot be used to steal funds or compromise the host.
