Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires an attacker to be, or to control, a gateway or agent already connected to the OpenClaw Windows Node's node WebSocket interface (hence PR:L, not unauthenticated). Given that access, the attacker invokes the screen.snapshot, camera.snap, or location.get handlers in NodeService, which before version 2026.7.1-3 performed the capture without the one-time consent gate (EnsureRecordingConsentAsync) that screen.record/camera.clip already enforced - and for camera.snap and location.get without even a user-visible indicator. No user interaction is needed (UI:N). Limiting factors: only OpenClaw Windows Node versions before 2026.7.1-3 are affected; the attacker must already possess node-agent/gateway connectivity; and the realistic high-impact path is a compromised or prompt-injected connected agent rather than an anonymous internet attacker. Impact is confined to confidentiality (silent screenshots, webcam photos, geolocation) with no integrity or availability effect.

Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-severity privacy vulnerability, not an inflated high-CVSS score. The vendor CVSS 4.0 base is 7.1 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N), correctly reflecting a network-reachable, low-complexity flaw that requires some privilege (PR:L, i.e. a connected gateway or agent) and impacts confidentiality only - there is no integrity or availability impact. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so exploitation is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The real risk is bounded by the PR:L prerequisite: an attacker must already be a gateway/agent authorized to talk to the node WebSocket, or must hijack such an agent (the vendor's own commit comments explicitly cite the 'prompt-injected agent' threat model). No signals conflict: CVSS network vector is consistent with the WebSocket-based description, and the confidentiality-only impact matches the CWE-862 missing-authorization / consent-bypass nature. The most notable metadata problem is the input Tags labeling this a 'Microsoft' product, which is incorrect - OpenClaw is an independent open-source project. Priority is real but limited: treat as a meaningful privacy/surveillance risk for exposed nodes, especially in agentic deployments where a compromised or manipulated agent could silently surveil users, rather than an internet-wide emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who controls or has prompt-injected a gateway/agent that is already connected to an OpenClaw Windows Node sends screen.snapshot, camera.snap, and location.get messages over the node WebSocket. The node executes these capture handlers with no consent prompt and (for camera and location, pre-patch) no on-screen indicator, silently returning a desktop screenshot, a webcam photo of the user, and the device's geolocation. No public exploit is identified, but the source diff confirms the vulnerable path and the low technical barrier once agent-level access exists.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 30, 2026

Silent capture of screen contents, webcam images, and device geolocation is possible in OpenClaw Windows Node before 2026.7.1-3 because the NodeService capture handlers performed these operations without the one-time consent gate that screen.record and camera.clip already enforced. An attacker who is, or who controls, a gateway or agent already connected to the node's WebSocket interface can invoke screen.snapshot, camera.snap, and location.get to covertly screenshot the desktop, photograph the user, and read physical location - for camera.snap and location.get without even a user-visible indicator - requiring no interaction from the victim. This is a genuine but moderate-severity privacy vulnerability affecting only pre-2026.7.1-3 builds; authentication is required in the sense that the attacker must already hold node-agent/gateway connectivity (CVSS:4.0 PR:L), and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade OpenClaw Windows Node to version 2026.7.1-3 or later - this is the vendor-released fix, published at https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw-windows-node/releases/tag/v2026.7.1-3 and described in advisory GHSA-fxch-cgcp-4v5h. The remediation is implemented by two upstream commits, 31a8c6557df740232898079b21f0eb677a4119cf and 16cb6897941fa7832ce2811e9d550caed9a49b4b, which reinstate the one-time consent gate (EnsureRecordingConsentAsync) for screen.snapshot and camera.snap and add a visible indicator for webcam photos and location reads; administrators who build from source should ensure their build includes both. Note that after upgrading, legitimate screen.snapshot and camera.snap calls will trigger a one-time consent prompt per capture type - this is intended behavior, not a regression, and location.get still relies on a per-use toast until a full consent gate is added. Where upgrading is not immediately possible, compensating controls carry real trade-offs: disconnect or unpair all gateways and agents that are not strictly trusted, since the vulnerability requires an already-connected peer (this breaks legitimate remote agent workflows); restrict or firewall the node's WebSocket listener so only known gateway hosts can reach it; and treat any connected agent as a potential prompt-injection vector by not granting agent access to nodes handling sensitive screens, webcams, or location data. Because exploitation is silent for camera.snap and location.get, review node/gateway connection logs and agent transcripts rather than relying on user reports to detect historical abuse.

Technical ContextAI · show details

OpenClaw Windows Node is a .NET/WinUI tray application whose NodeService exposes capture capabilities to connected gateways and agents over a node WebSocket interface. The flaw is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): the screen.snapshot, camera.snap, and location.get handlers were added without the consent authorization check (EnsureRecordingConsentAsync) that the equivalent streaming operations screen.record and camera.clip already required. The upstream fix diff shows the root cause precisely - OnScreenCapture gained a call to EnsureRecordingConsentAsync(RecordingType.Screen), OnCameraSnap gained EnsureRecordingConsentAsync(RecordingType.Camera) plus a toast indicator, and OnCameraClip/location handling gained a per-use 'Location shared' toast, with a one-time consent gate for RecordingType.Location noted as the recommended follow-up. The consent mechanism is one-time and remembered per recording type, so the correct behavior costs a single prompt per type rather than locking legitimate use. The affected component is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:openclaw:openclaw_windows_node:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* (all versions before 2026.7.1-3). Impact per the authoritative assessment is confidentiality-only (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N), with no integrity or availability effect; the realistic high-impact path is a compromised or prompt-injected connected agent rather than an anonymous internet attacker.

DescriptionCVE.org

OpenClaw Windows Node before 2026.7.1-3 contains a missing authorization vulnerability in NodeService capture handlers that allows connected gateways or agents to perform screen snapshots, camera snaps, and location captures without consent prompts. Attackers can invoke screen.snapshot, camera.snap, and location.get over the node WebSocket to silently capture screenshots, photograph users through webcams, and obtain device geolocation without user interaction.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

OpenClaw Windows Node versions prior to 2026.7.1-3 contain a privacy flaw that allows authenticated attackers with existing gateway or agent connectivity to silently capture screen contents, webcam images, and device geolocation. This affects organizations using these builds, potentially exposing sensitive on-screen information and violating user privacy. Leadership should prioritize patching because the vulnerability can lead to regulatory penalties, reputational damage, and loss of customer trust.
