|
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a user to open or process an attacker-crafted capture file in a vulnerable Wireshark/tshark build (4.6.0-4.6.8 or 4.4.0-4.4.18), or to capture crafted live traffic that reaches the Frame protocol metadissector. Limiting factors: local attack vector (AV:L) plus required user interaction (UI:R) mean there is no unauthenticated remote trigger - an analyst must actively load the malicious input. Impact is confined to a crash of the analysis tool (A:H only); no data exposure or code execution results. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but low-urgency issue. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) describes a local, user-interaction-dependent denial of service with no confidentiality or integrity impact - the 5.5 (Medium) score is driven entirely by the availability hit (application crash). CWE-617 (Reachable Assertion) confirms this is a controlled abort in Wireshark's 'Frame protocol metadissector' rather than memory corruption or code execution. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so there is no evidence of active or automated exploitation. The one signal worth flagging: AV:L combined with UI:R indicates exploitation requires an analyst to open/process an attacker-supplied capture file (or capture malicious live traffic), NOT remote network exploitation - this is the standard Wireshark dissector-crash pattern and should not be read as a remotely-triggerable server flaw. Net: a real but self-limiting bug, low real-world priority despite the ubiquity of the product; patch on normal cadence. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a malformed capture file (or generates crafted network traffic) that triggers the assertion in Wireshark's Frame metadissector. A network analyst opens the file - or captures the traffic live - and the Wireshark/tshark process crashes, interrupting analysis. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the impact is limited to a crash with no code execution. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 29, 2026
Wireshark 4.6.0 through 4.6.8 and 4.4.0 through 4.4.18 can be crashed by a reachable-assertion failure in the Frame protocol metadissector, a local, user-assisted denial of service tracked as CVE-2026-96422 (CVSS 5.5, CWE-617). The attack vector is local and requires user interaction: an analyst must open or process a crafted capture file, or capture crafted live traffic that reaches the metadissector, after which the parser aborts the process; the impact is limited to availability (A:H) with no confidentiality or integrity effect and no code execution. There is no confirmed active exploitation (not in CISA KEV) and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis; authentication requirements are not confirmed from the available data, though the assessed vector (AV:L/PR:N/UI:R) indicates no privileges are needed beyond the victim loading the malicious input. Risk is genuine but low-urgency, confined to disruption of the analysis workflow.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to a Wireshark maintenance release outside the affected ranges - that is, a 4.6.x build newer than 4.6.8 or a 4.4.x build newer than 4.4.18 - and confirm the exact fixed version documented in the vendor advisory at https://www.wireshark.org/security/wnpa-sec-2026-102.html (patch status: Patch available per vendor advisory; the fixed release numbers should be read from that advisory rather than assumed). No CISA KEV entry or public exploit code has been reported, so emergency out-of-band change management is not warranted; fold the upgrade into the next routine maintenance window. Because the Frame metadissector is core plumbing that runs for every packet and cannot be disabled with a preference or a protocol-level filter, there is no clean configuration workaround that preserves full capture-analysis functionality. Compensating controls therefore focus on containment: process untrusted capture files in a disposable VM or container with the tool running as an unprivileged, non-root user and with core dumps disabled, so that the fatal assertion only kills the sandboxed analyzer and cannot disrupt a production host or leave large dumps on disk; where a capture is known to be untrusted, pre-filter or pre-sanitize it with a separate, trusted tool before loading it into an affected Wireshark build. The trade-off is operational friction - sandboxed analysis slows triage and pre-filtering risks discarding the very packets needed for investigation - so treat these as temporary measures until the upgrade is applied.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is a reachable assertion (CWE-617) inside Wireshark's dissection engine. Wireshark wraps every capture in a synthetic "frame" layer generated by the Frame protocol metadissector, which derives metadata such as frame number, arrival timestamps, encapsulation type and other per-packet bookkeeping before handing the payload to the protocol-specific dissectors. Under conditions triggered by malformed or unusual input, that metadissector hits an assertion that Wireshark treats as fatal (an abort), so the epan parsing path terminates the whole process rather than returning a malformed-packet indication. This is an internal sanity-check failure, not a memory-safety bug: there is no evidence of out-of-bounds access, use-after-free or code execution, which is consistent with the assessed vector showing only an availability impact (C:N/I:N/A:H). The CPE cpe:2.3:a:wireshark_foundation:wireshark:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms the affected component is the Wireshark Foundation's Wireshark distribution itself; the same shared dissector code is used by the GUI (wireshark) and CLI (tshark) binaries, so any front end built from the 4.6.0-4.6.8 or 4.4.0-4.4.18 source trees carries the defect. The local attack vector (AV:L) plus required user interaction (UI:R) reflects that exploitation depends on the victim tooling choosing to load attacker-supplied packets, not on a remotely reachable network service.
