Network-reachable web UI (AV:N/AC:L), requires an authenticated non-admin manage account (PR:L), no victim interaction (UI:N); alias-based arbitrary file read gives C:H, routing control gives I:L, no availability impact.

Nginx Proxy Manager through 2.16.0 fails to restrict the advanced_config field to administrators, allowing non-admin users with manage permissions to inject arbitrary nginx directives. Attackers can inject malicious nginx configuration such as alias directives to serve arbitrary files or control routing for their assigned hosts.

AnalysisAI
Broken access control in Nginx Proxy Manager through 2.16.0 lets a non-administrative user who has been granted 'manage' permissions over one or more hosts write arbitrary nginx directives into the advanced_config field, which the backend renders verbatim into the generated proxy host configuration. Because directives such as alias can be injected, an attacker can serve files from arbitrary paths or manipulate routing for the hosts they are assigned, changing the content (C:H) and, to a lesser degree, the integrity of what the proxy returns (I:L), though this is confined to that user's assigned hosts and no victim interaction is required. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Requires an authenticated non-admin account that has been granted 'manage' permissions over one or more hosts in Nginx Proxy Manager; the attacker then abuses the advanced_config field (rendered verbatim into the generated nginx config, see proxy_host.conf line 28) which prior to the fix lacked an admin-only restriction. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuine, moderate-priority broken-access-control flaw (CWE-863), not an inflated high-CVSS issue. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Apply the upstream fix from PR #5908 (https://github.com/NginxProxyManager/nginx-proxy-manager/pull/5908), which enforces an isAdmin check before advanced_config can be created or changed and scopes host queries by permission metadata; the vendor reports a patch is available, but because the fix is a pull request/commit rather than a tagged release, treat it as 'Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed' and verify the image or package you deploy actually contains the change. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory all Nginx Proxy Manager instances and confirm whether any are running version 2.16.0 or earlier, and audit which accounts hold delegated 'manage' permissions on individual proxy hosts, since those accounts are the only viable attack path; the vulnerability is unauthenticated-free but requires an authenticated low-privileged account (CVSS PR:L, AV:N). …
