| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitable against any Parse Server deployment that exposes the REST API to clients AND uses push notifications - this is the DEFAULT configuration, not a special mode. The only prerequisite is knowledge of the public application ID, which is intentionally distributed within client apps. The attacker submits non-string (e.g., object) values in installation/device-token fields to inject query operators into the deduplication cleanup, which executes with elevated privileges before class-level permissions are checked. No account, session token, master key, or user interaction is required. Limiting factors are minimal: deployments that do not use push notifications or do not expose the REST API to untrusted clients are not affected, and upgrading to 8.6.90 or 9.10.1-alpha.9 (which type-checks the fields and scopes cleanup to the calling app) fully remediates it. |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority issue, not a high-CVSS-but-low-risk paper finding. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) describes remote, low-complexity, fully unauthenticated exploitation with no user interaction and no special attack requirements - the attacker needs only the public application ID, which is by design distributed to every client app. The impact is a destructive, unrecoverable mass deletion of installation/device records, which the vendor scored as VI:H (integrity) while setting VA:N; this is arguably understated because deleted registrations halt push-notification delivery entirely until every client re-registers, which is a real availability loss (I assess A:H as well). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - but the combination of unauthenticated network reach, trivial complexity, default-configuration exposure, and a permanent destructive outcome makes this attractive and easy to weaponize regardless of the absent POC. Note the deduplication cleanup runs with elevated privileges BEFORE class-level permissions are evaluated, which is precisely why an unauthenticated caller can bypass the normal permission model. All key CVSS signals are internally consistent with the description; the only conflict is vendor VA:N versus the description's explicit push-outage impact. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has obtained a target deployment's public application ID (embedded in every distributed client app) sends a crafted REST installation request with non-string values in the device-token/installation fields, injecting query operators into the deduplication logic. Because the cleanup runs with elevated privileges before class-level permissions apply, the malformed query matches and deletes every installation record - or an attacker-chosen subset - leaving the application unable to deliver push notifications until all clients re-register. No account, session token, master key, or user interaction is required; no public exploit code was identified at the time of analysis, but the attack is low-complexity and network-reachable. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 26, 2026
Unauthenticated remote attackers can delete every device registration in a Parse Server application - or any attacker-chosen subset - by submitting non-string (object) values in installation/device-token fields that are used to build the deduplication query without type validation. The only prerequisite is knowledge of the public application ID, which is intentionally distributed inside client apps; no account, session token, master key, or user interaction is required, and the destructive cleanup runs with elevated privileges before class-level permissions are evaluated. Parse Server versions prior to 8.6.90 and 9.0.0 through 9.10.1-alpha.9 are affected in the default configuration that exposes the REST API to clients and uses push notifications, and because deleted registrations cannot be recovered server-side, push delivery halts until every client re-registers; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the vendor-released patch is 8.6.90 or 9.10.1-alpha.9.
RemediationAI
Upgrade immediately to Parse Server 8.6.90 (8.x branch) or 9.10.1-alpha.9 (9.x branch); these are the vendor-released patches, and they fix the issue by rejecting non-string installation field values with a client error and by scoping the deduplication cleanup to the calling application, so no workaround other than upgrading is available. Confirm the running version after deployment and re-run any client registrations, because installations deleted before the upgrade cannot be recovered on the server side and push notifications will not reach those devices until each client re-registers. If an emergency upgrade is not immediately possible, the only partial compensating controls are to stop exposing the Parse Server REST API to untrusted clients - for example, by placing it behind a reverse proxy or firewall allowlist that restricts which networks can reach the /parse/classes and /parse/installations endpoints, or to disable push-notification features so the vulnerable deduplication path is never exercised - but each of these removes required functionality and both are inferior to patching; blocking only the installation endpoints may break legitimate client registration and is easily bypassed if other endpoints reach the same unvalidated code path. Consult the vendor advisory at https://github.com/parse-community/parse-server/security/advisories/GHSA-cc6h-c8m4-hgrx for the definitive fix guidance, and monitor Parse Server release notes for any further hardening of installation field handling.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Parse Server is an open-source Node.js backend for the Parse platform that stores application data - including push-notification device registrations in the Installation class - in a database such as MongoDB, where queries are expressed as BSON documents and operators like $ne, $gt, and $in are legitimate query primitives. The vulnerability is CWE-943 (Improper Neutralization of Special Elements in Data Query Logic), commonly called NoSQL operator injection: the device-token deduplication routine takes client-supplied installation fields and interpolates them directly into a database query without first confirming they are strings, so a JSON object such as {"$ne": null} or a targeted $in list is interpreted as a query operator rather than a literal value. Because that deduplication pass executes in an internal elevated-privilege context before Parse Server's class-level permissions (CLP) are enforced, the injected operator is not stopped by normal ACLs, and because the cleanup was not scoped to the calling application ID, the attacker-controlled match can be broadened to every Installation record. The CPE strings cpe:2.3:a:parse-community:parse-server:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* identify Parse Server as the affected package; the vendor advisory GHSA-cc6h-c8m4-hgrx documents that 8.6.90 and 9.10.1-alpha.9 add strict string type checking and scope the cleanup to the calling application.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Parse Server is an open source backend server. In versions prior to 8.6.90 and in versions from 9.0.0 prior to 9.10.1-alpha.9, the device token deduplication logic for installation records does not validate the type of client-supplied installation fields before using them to build database queries. An unauthenticated remote attacker who knows only the public application ID can submit non-string values in these fields to inject query operators, causing the deduplication cleanup - which runs with elevated privileges before class-level permissions are evaluated - to delete every device registration in the application or an attacker-chosen subset of them. No account, session token, master key, or user interaction is required. Deleted registrations cannot be recovered on the server, so push notifications cannot be delivered until every client re-registers. Any deployment that exposes the REST API to clients and uses push notifications is affected in its default configuration. Versions 8.6.90 and 9.10.1-alpha.9 fix the issue by rejecting non-string values with a client error and by scoping the deduplication cleanup to the calling application. No workaround other than upgrading is available.

Executive ViewAI
Parse Server deployments that expose the REST API to clients and rely on push notifications can have their entire device-registration database erased by an attacker who needs only the publicly distributed application ID. Because deleted registrations cannot be restored server-side, push delivery to the full user base stops until every client application re-registers, producing a sustained customer-facing outage and degraded engagement across all affected mobile and web clients. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the low prerequisite and destructive, hard-to-recover outcome put this squarely in scope for immediate remediation.
Apply vendor patch: 8.6.90 or 9.10.1-alpha.9. Until every instance is upgraded, restrict REST API exposure to trusted networks, deny client-initiated deletes on the installations class, back up installation records for rapid restoration, and alert on bulk device-registration deletions.

Attack Technique
Code injection occurs when an application accepts user input and passes it directly into a language interpreter or evaluator without proper sanitization.
NoSQL injection exploits databases that don't use traditional SQL syntax-like MongoDB, CouchDB, or Redis-by manipulating queries through unsanitized user input.
