Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the hosting application forward externally-controlled recipient addresses to Nodemailer's address parser without performing its own strict recipient validation, and that the attacker supply an address whose local-part is a quoted string followed by an RFC 5322 comment (e.g. "user"@example.com(x)evil.com). Limiting factors: the real-world consequence of misdelivery is explicitly unconfirmed by the advisory and depends on how the downstream SMTP server interprets the space-separated envelope value; only application code that trusts Nodemailer's normalized output without revalidation is affected; and the impact is integrity-only (VI:L) with no confidentiality or availability effect.

Impact

The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:N, score 6.9) describes a network-reachable, unauthenticated, integrity-only weakness with no confidentiality or availability impact - the 6.9 is driven mainly by the network vector, not by severe impact. This is a low-to-moderate real-world priority, not a high-urgency issue: there is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code identified, so exploitation is theoretical rather than observed. Critically, the description itself hedges the impact - 'Whether this results in delivery to an unintended recipient on real SMTP servers has not been confirmed' - meaning the VI:L integrity claim is a parsing-correctness defect whose downstream security consequence (misdelivery/recipient smuggling) is unproven. The 'Information Disclosure' tag conflicts with the CVSS vector, which shows VC:N (no confidentiality impact) and VI:L (integrity only); the tag appears mislabeled. Net: a genuine input-validation bug worth patching on the normal maintenance cadence, but not an emergency given unconfirmed real-world impact and no exploitation signals.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An application that passes externally-supplied recipient addresses to Nodemailer without its own strict validation receives an address such as "user"@example.com(x)evil.com; Nodemailer's parser normalizes this to 'user@example.com evil.com', smuggling an attacker-controlled domain atom into the SMTP envelope.to. Depending on how the receiving SMTP server interprets the space-separated value, the message could potentially be routed to or influenced by the injected domain. No public exploit code exists, and the practical delivery impact is explicitly unconfirmed by the advisory.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 26, 2026

Remote, unauthenticated attackers can exploit mis-parsing of recipient addresses in Nodemailer versions 9.1.0 through 10.0.8 to inject extra attacker-controlled domain text into the SMTP envelope, but only when the hosting application forwards externally supplied recipient addresses without its own strict validation. The flaw combines a quoted local-part with trailing RFC 5322 comments, yielding normalized values such as 'user@example.com evil.com'; the advisory does not confirm that real SMTP servers would actually deliver to an unintended recipient, and the impact is integrity-only with no confidentiality or availability effect. No public exploit identified at time of analysis (no CISA KEV, no POC observed).

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: 10.0.9 (upgrade to this version or later), which fixes the quoted-local-part comment parsing path. If immediate upgrade is not possible, implement strict recipient validation in the application before passing addresses to Nodemailer: reject or sanitize addresses containing RFC 5322 comments adjacent to a quoted local-part, and explicitly set envelope.to rather than relying on Nodemailer's normalized output. Note that aggressive address filtering may reject legitimate but uncommon addresses that use comments, so validate against your expected address format and test for false positives. Refer to the vendor advisory at https://github.com/nodemailer/nodemailer/security/advisories/GHSA-g57g-f23g-4646 and the VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/nodemailer-before-10.0.9-malformed-envelope-recipient-via-rfc-5322-comment.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability resides in Nodemailer's address parser (src/addressparser), which handles email addresses per RFC 5322. When the local-part of an address is a quoted string (e.g., '"user"@example.com') and is followed by a comment (e.g., '(x)evil.com'), the parser incorrectly retains the trailing comment-separated domain atoms, producing a normalized address string like 'user@example.com evil.com'. This malformed value is then used without strict recipient validation when the SMTP envelope is built in src/mime-node, allowing the ambiguous recipient to be placed in envelope.to. The root cause is CWE-20 improper input validation; the issue is a variant of the comment-parsing flaw addressed in GHSA-cc9r-2j5m-2m83 but affects the separate quoted-local-part code path. Exploitation requires the application to pass externally controlled addresses to Nodemailer and to trust its output without revalidation; the real-world consequence of misdelivery is explicitly unconfirmed, and the assessed impact is integrity-only (VI:L) with no confidentiality or availability effect.

DescriptionCVE.org

Nodemailer is a Node.js email-sending library. In versions >= 9.1.0 and < 10.0.9, the address parser (src/addressparser) mishandles addresses whose local-part is a quoted string and that are followed by RFC 5322 comments, allowing trailing comment-separated domain atoms to be retained in the normalized address. For example, the input "user"@example.com(x)evil.com is parsed to the address value 'user@example.com evil.com', which contains additional attacker-controlled domain text separated by a literal space. This parsed value is used without further strict recipient validation when the message envelope is built (envelope.to in src/mime-node), so a malformed/ambiguous recipient address can be accepted and placed in the SMTP envelope. Whether this results in delivery to an unintended recipient on real SMTP servers has not been confirmed. The issue is a variant of the RFC 5322 comment parsing problem addressed in GHSA-cc9r-2j5m-2m83, affecting the separate quoted-local-part code path. Version 10.0.9 contains a fix.
