MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a deployment that has Active Memory enabled AND configures requester-specific tool rules (toolsBySender) that explicitly deny the target sender the memory tools (memory_search, memory_get). The attacker must be an already-admitted sender (PR:L) reaching the agent, and exploitation depends on the deterministic/hidden automatic-recall path firing for their request (AT:P, AC:H). Exploitation is limited to non-default configurations combining Active Memory with per-sender denials; there is no user interaction requirement, but success is opportunistic and yields only information derived from durable memory, not direct tool invocation or write/availability impact. |
| Impact | All signals point to a genuinely low-priority issue. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:N/VA:N) scores only 2.3, and the metrics are internally consistent with the description: network reachable but high attack complexity (AC:H), a present attack requirement (AT:P), a low but non-zero privilege requirement (PR:L, the sender must already be admitted to the deployment), and confidentiality-only, low-magnitude impact (VC:L, no integrity or availability effect). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis'. This is not a high-CVSS-but-hidden-risk case nor the reverse - it is a low-CVSS, low-real-risk broken-authorization flaw whose payoff is limited to leaking information *derived from* durable memory into an agent response, not direct tool access or data exfiltration. One labeling conflict exists: the 'Authentication Bypass' tag is inaccurate - CWE-862 and the description describe a missing authorization (tool-policy enforcement gap during Active Memory recall), not an authentication bypass. Impact is further bounded by what durable memory actually contains in a given deployment. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | In a deployment using Active Memory alongside requester-specific toolsBySender rules that explicitly deny a particular sender access to memory_search/memory_get, that admitted-but-denied sender interacts with the agent normally. Automatic recall silently retrieves durable memory and folds it into the agent's context, so the agent's reply may reveal information derived from that memory even though the sender never invoked a memory tool. No public exploit code is identified; the high complexity and required prior configuration make this an opportunistic information leak rather than a reliable attack. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 26, 2026
Durable memory content can leak to an already-admitted but tool-denied sender in the OpenClaw Node.js agent package before version 2026.8.1, because the Active Memory automatic-recall path does not re-apply the originating requester's effective tool policy. When a deployment enables Active Memory and uses toolsBySender rules that explicitly deny a sender access to memory_search and memory_get, deterministic and hidden recall paths can still pull durable memory into the agent's context and surface memory-derived information in the response without any memory tool being invoked. Exploitation requires this non-default combination of Active Memory plus per-sender denials and an attacker who is already admitted to the agent (authenticated, PR:L), with no user interaction; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the issue is rated low severity (CVSS 4.0 base 2.3; independently assessed as CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N).
RemediationAI
Upgrade the 'openclaw' npm package to 2026.8.1 or later - vendor-released patch: 2026.8.1 - which corrects the recall path so the originating requester's effective tool policy is applied during Active Memory automatic recall; see the GitHub advisory at https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/security/advisories/GHSA-wjfv-5qch-m5vj and the VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/openclaw-before-2026.8.1-authentication-bypass-via-active-memory. If upgrading immediately is not possible, the most direct compensating control is to disable Active Memory automatic recall in affected deployments, accepting the trade-off that the agent loses its automatic memory-context enrichment (explicit, policy-checked memory tool use remains available and correctly denied per toolsBySender). Because the bypass only matters when an admitted sender is explicitly denied the memory tools, tightening agent admission (allowlists/identity rules) so that senders who must not see durable memory cannot reach the agent at all also removes the exposure, at the cost of restricting who can interact with the agent. Treat any toolsBySender denial of memory_search/memory_get as non-authoritative until patched for the purpose of data exposure, and consider reviewing, redacting, or rotating sensitive entries in durable memory that such denied senders could have caused to be recalled. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, but the fix is low-risk and available, so patching remains the recommended action.

Technical ContextAI · show details
OpenClaw is a Node.js/npm agent package (CPE cpe:2.3:a:openclaw:openclaw:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) whose 'Active Memory' feature automatically recalls durable memory and injects it into the model context. The root cause is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): the automatic recall pipeline - including deterministic and hidden recall paths - retrieves durable memory without honoring the originating requester's effective tool policy, so the toolsBySender configuration that denies memory_search and memory_get to a given sender is bypassed for recall purposes. Authorization is therefore enforced at the tool-invocation layer but not at the implicit context-assembly layer, creating an inconsistency between what a sender is permitted to call and what the agent may disclose. The vendor's CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:N/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N) and the independent CVSS 3.1 assessment (AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N) agree that this is a confidentiality-only, low-impact issue requiring a specific configuration and a privileged-but-limited (already-admitted) sender; there is no integrity, availability, or scope impact, and the attack is opportunistic because it depends on the recall path firing for that request.

Admitted sender means PR:L; reliance on a specific config plus hidden recall path firing makes AC:H; only low-magnitude confidentiality leak of memory-derived data, so C:L and I:N/A:N.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
OpenClaw (npm package 'openclaw') before 2026.8.1 fails to apply the originating requester's effective tool policy during Active Memory automatic recall. In deployments that use Active Memory together with requester-specific tool rules, deterministic and hidden recall paths can retrieve durable memory and inject it into the agent's context even when toolsBySender explicitly denies that requester access to the memory tools (memory_search, memory_get). As a result, an admitted but denied sender can receive information derived from durable memory in the agent's response without directly invoking any memory tool. The issue is fixed in 2026.8.1.
