Exploitation Conditions

Requires Zammad's inbound PGP secure-mailing feature to be configured with a registered/trusted sender public key, and the attacker must possess a genuine opaque (inline, '-----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE-----') PGP-signed message from that trusted sender to reuse. The attacker then delivers an email whose displayed body differs from the embedded signed content (signature substitution). Exploitation is limited by: the PGP integration being non-default and needing prior key registration; the need for a pre-existing valid opaque signature; UI:P - an agent must open the article and actually rely on the 'Good signature' indicator to be deceived; and the standard (RFC 3156 detached, '-----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE-----') signature path is unaffected, so only opaque/inline signatures are exploitable.

Impact

This is a low-to-moderate integrity issue, not a confidentiality or availability threat. The vendor-provided CVSS 4.0 vector (5.3, AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:N/VI:L/VA:N) is internally consistent with the description: a network-delivered email requires an agent to open and trust the article (UI:P/Passive) with a limited integrity impact (VI:L) and no confidentiality or availability impact - the assessment agrees. This is a signature-spoofing / substitution flaw (CWE-347), so despite the 'Information Disclosure' tag no data is disclosed; the real harm is agents being misled by a falsely 'Good' PGP indicator. Exploitation status: no public exploit identified at time of analysis - no KEV listing, no EPSS score, and no POC provided (the patch's spec fixtures include a working opaque-signature test but that is a regression test, not weaponized exploit code). Exploitation is meaningfully gated: PGP secure-mailing must be enabled, the sender key must be registered/trusted in Zammad, and the attacker must possess a genuinely valid opaque (inline) PGP-signed message to reuse against different displayed content. Combined with the requirement that an agent both view the mail and actively rely on the signature badge, real-world risk is low and closer to a targeted social-engineering aid than a broadly exploitable flaw.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker obtains a legitimately opaque-signed (inline PGP MESSAGE) email from a sender whose key Zammad trusts, then submits an inbound message whose displayed body differs from the signed embedded content. Because Zammad's verify_detached_signature path passed opaque signatures to gpg --verify without confirming the embedded plaintext matched the displayed body, the article is stored and shown with a 'Good signature' status, leading an agent to trust attacker-controlled content as authentic. No public exploit code is available, and success depends on the PGP integration being configured and the agent relying on the signature indicator.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026

An improper PGP signature verification flaw in Zammad 7.0.3 and 7.1.1 lets a remote, unauthenticated sender have an inbound email article saved with a successful 'Good signature' status even though the displayed message body is not actually covered by that signature, misleading agents who trust the indicator. Exploitation requires the inbound PGP secure-mailing feature to be configured with a registered/trusted sender key and possession of a genuine opaque ('-----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE-----') signed message from that sender, which is replayed while the displayed body is swapped; an agent must open the article and rely on the signature indicator (UI:R). The impact is limited to integrity of the displayed content, not confidentiality or availability, and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis. Zammad fixed the issue in version 7.1.2.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Zammad to version 7.1.2, which contains the vendor-released patch that cross-checks opaque PGP signatures against the displayed message body; the fix is documented in the vendor advisory at https://github.com/zammad/zammad/security/advisories/GHSA-r957-vp26-563q and in commit https://github.com/zammad/zammad/commit/dd22716ced9f18861ed6f3b326c9d332c8c2072d. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to disable Zammad's inbound PGP secure-mailing/PGP signature verification entirely, accepting the trade-off that agents then see no signature trust indicator for any inbound mail; alternatively, block or strip inbound emails whose signature part uses an opaque '-----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE-----' inline signature at the mail gateway, which neutralizes this vector without affecting the unaffected RFC 3156 detached-signature path but will reject legitimate inline-signed correspondence. Because exploitation depends on agents trusting the 'Good signature' badge, instruct agents during the exposure window not to treat a PGP 'Good signature' indicator on inbound mail as proof of the displayed body's authenticity, and verify sensitive instructions out of band; the PGP integration being non-default and requiring a pre-registered trusted sender key already reduces the attack surface, so deployments without inbound PGP verification configured are not exposed.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability is CWE-347 (Improper Verification of Cryptographic Signature) in Zammad's secure mailing subsystem, specifically lib/secure_mailing/pgp/tool/data.rb, which verifies inbound PGP-signed email. The code attempted to distinguish two signature formats: RFC 3156 detached signatures ('-----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE-----'), which are verified against the separately supplied message data, and non-standard opaque/inline signatures ('-----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE-----'), which embed the signed content inside the PGP blob. Before the fix, when the signature blob began with '-----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE-----', Zammad invoked gpg --verify on the signature file alone; GPG then verified the content embedded inside that blob rather than the message body Zammad intended to display or store. An attacker could therefore reuse an old, genuinely valid opaque signed message from a trusted sender and deliver it alongside arbitrary attacker-chosen body text, producing a 'Good signature' result that did not attest to the shown content (a signature-substitution attack). The patch adds a verify_opaque_signature routine that verifies the blob and then decrypts it with --skip-verify and compares the extracted plaintext to the supplied data, raising 'PGP signature does not cover the displayed message body' on mismatch; it also hardens format detection by switching from start_with? to include? so a prefixed opaque header cannot slip through, and raises 'Invalid signature format: expected a PGP signature' for unrecognized input. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:zammad:zammad:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* and EUVD-2026-87268 confirm Zammad as the affected product across versions before 7.1.2.

DescriptionCVE.org

Zammad is a web based open source helpdesk/customer support system. In 7.0.3 and 7.1.1, under certain conditions, Zammad's verification of inbound PGP-signed email can mark a message as carrying a valid ("Good") PGP signature from a registered sender key, even though the displayed message content is not actually covered by that signature. As a result, the inbound article may be stored with a successful signature status that does not reflect the authenticity of the shown content. This can mislead agents who rely on the signature indicator when assessing the trustworthiness of incoming mail. This issue is fixed in version 7.1.2.
