Exploitation Conditions

Requires a multi-tenant LiteLLM deployment (before 1.101.0-rc.1) with the semantic cache layer enabled and the attacker possessing a valid virtual key (authenticated, PR:L). Exploitation targets specific routes such as /v1/responses and /bedrock/* and depends on the metadata-key mismatch between _get_semantic_cache_tenant_scope() and _get_metadata_variable_name(); the attacker must craft prompts semantically similar enough to collide with a victim tenant's cached entries (AC:H). The tool-call abuse path additionally requires an agentic front-end that auto-executes returned function_call/tool_calls payloads (UI:P). Limiting factors: single-tenant installs, deployments with semantic caching disabled, and non-agentic clients substantially reduce or eliminate impact.

Impact

This is a genuine, well-substantiated authorization flaw (CWE-863) reported by VulnCheck with a vendor patch already available (commit 16db51e2, PR #39590, fixed in v1.101.0-rc.1), so the underlying defect is confirmed rather than speculative. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:N/PR:L/UI:P/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N/SC:H/SI:H/SA:N, base 8.7 High) tells a coherent story: network-reachable, but requiring a valid virtual key (PR:L - authenticated), elevated attack complexity (AC:H, because exploitation depends on crafting semantically similar prompts that collide with another tenant's cache entry), and passive user interaction (UI:P). The high confidentiality and integrity impacts plus scope-change metrics (SC:H/SI:H) are justified because the flaw crosses a tenant/security boundary - one principal reads another principal's data and can influence another principal's tool execution. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so exploitation is not confirmed in the wild; the AC:H and PR:L requirements argue against opportunistic mass exploitation and toward targeted abuse by an existing authenticated tenant. Net: this is a real priority for multi-tenant LiteLLM deployments (especially those exposing semantic caching and agentic tool-calling), but the authenticated + high-complexity gating keeps it below drop-everything status for single-tenant or cache-disabled installs.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated user holding a valid LiteLLM virtual key on a multi-tenant gateway submits prompts that are semantically similar to another tenant's earlier requests against affected routes such as /v1/responses or /bedrock/*, causing the semantic cache to return the other tenant's cached response containing PII, financial data, or source code. In an agentic setup, the attacker can further coerce a victim front-end into auto-executing attacker-influenced function_call/tool_calls payloads under the victim's credentials. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, but the flaw is confirmed and patched by the vendor.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026

A tenant isolation bypass in BerriAI LiteLLM versions before 1.101.0-rc.1 lets an authenticated holder of a valid virtual key read other tenants' entries from the semantic cache and, in the worst case, have attacker-supplied tool calls executed under a victim's credentials. The flaw stems from an inconsistency in how the cache layer derives the tenant scope versus the metadata variable name, so semantically similar prompts sent to routes such as /v1/responses and /bedrock/* can collide with and return another tenant's cached response - potentially exposing PII, financial data, or source code. Exploitation requires a multi-tenant deployment with semantic caching enabled and a sufficiently similar prompt to hit the victim's cache entry, and it is rated CVSS 8.7 with a vendor patch already released (commit 16db51e2, fixed in v1.101.0-rc.1); no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the CVE is not in CISA KEV.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to BerriAI LiteLLM v1.101.0-rc.1 or later, which contains the fix from commit 16db51e2cfc28e02bd460481e634a8403ea9265e (PR #39590, https://github.com/BerriAI/litellm/pull/39590); the vendor ships signed Docker images, so verify the image with the documented cosign command against the pinned commit 0112e53 before deploying the updated container. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to disable the semantic cache layer entirely, since the bypass exists only in the tenant-scoping of cached lookups - the trade-off is materially higher latency and token cost because every prompt must be re-sent to the backing model. Deployments that must keep caching enabled should restrict it to a single tenant, and multi-tenant operators should consider splitting tenants into separate LiteLLM instances or separate caches so a cross-tenant key collision cannot occur; alternatively, block or disable the /v1/responses and /bedrock/* routes for untrusted virtual keys, accepting lost functionality on those paths. To blunt the function_call/tool_calls abuse path, disable automatic execution of tool calls in any agentic front-end and require explicit human confirmation of tool invocations, which also reduces the user-interaction precondition this exploit relies on. Because exploitation needs only a valid virtual key, rotate and tightly scope virtual keys, audit logs for cross-tenant cache hits and unexpected tool executions, and treat any cached value returned to a principal as untrusted input. No vendor-released patch was bypassed or missing - the fix from v1.101.0-rc.1 is the authoritative remediation, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

Technical ContextAI · show details

LiteLLM is a multi-tenant LLM proxy/gateway that fronts many model providers (OpenAI, Bedrock, and others) behind a unified API and issues virtual keys scoped to tenants. Its semantic cache layer improves latency and cost by returning a previously stored response when an incoming prompt is semantically similar to an earlier one rather than requiring an exact string match. Caching in a multi-tenant gateway must partition entries by tenant, and this CVE is a CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization) defect in which the cache-write namespace produced by _get_semantic_cache_tenant_scope() does not agree with the key produced by _get_metadata_variable_name(), leaving the tenant discriminator out of the retrieval path. The result is that a lookup on an affected route can be resolved against another tenant's cached payload, including cached function_call/tool_calls structures, which downstream agentic clients may then interpret as instructions. The assessed vector is CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:N, i.e. network-reachable, requiring a valid authenticated principal (PR:L), a hard-to-force semantic cache collision (AC:H), and a user or agentic front-end acting on the returned payload (UI:R), with scope change because the crossing of tenant boundaries impacts resources beyond the attacker's own authorization scope.

DescriptionCVE.org

BerriAI LiteLLM before 1.101.0-rc.1 contains a tenant isolation bypass vulnerability in the semantic cache layer that allows authenticated users to read other tenants' cached responses by exploiting a metadata key mismatch between _get_semantic_cache_tenant_scope() and _get_metadata_variable_name(). Attackers holding a valid virtual key can submit semantically similar prompts on affected routes such as /v1/responses and /bedrock/* to retrieve cached responses containing other tenants' personally identifiable information, financial data, or source code, and can cause agentic front-ends to auto-execute attacker-supplied tool calls under victim credentials by returning cached function_call or tool_calls payloads to a different principal.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

BerriAI LiteLLM versions prior to 1.101.0-rc.1 contain a tenant isolation bypass that could allow one customer to access another customer's cached AI responses, potentially exposing sensitive data or enabling unauthorized actions. Organizations running multi-tenant LiteLLM deployments with semantic caching enabled are at risk, and while no public exploit identified at time of analysis, the potential for cross-tenant data leakage warrants immediate attention. A vendor patch is available and should be applied promptly.
