MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the kernel built and running with ksmbd (CONFIG_SMB_SERVER) actively exporting at least one SMB3 share, and an SMB3 client that authenticates (PR:L) and negotiates multichannel so multiple connections bind to one session. Exploitation then depends on racing a LOGOFF, synchronous CANCEL, or abrupt connection teardown against still-running requests - specifically a deferred byte-range lock that remains counted until its file closes, or a pending CANCEL - so the shared session objects are freed while a bound channel still references them. Limiting factors: ksmbd is not enabled by default and is far less common than userspace Samba; valid credentials are required; and success hinges on winning a narrow teardown/quiesce race window (non-deterministic, AC:H). Impact is a kernel crash / denial of service, not data disclosure. |
| Impact | This is a Linux kernel ksmbd (in-kernel SMB3 server) session-teardown race that, in impact terms, is a use-after-free / DoS - not the 'Information Disclosure' its tag claims and not the confidentiality/integrity compromise the CVSS suggests. NVD assigns 8.8 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H). Two metrics are questionable: AC:L understates that the bug is a race between LOGOFF/CANCEL/connection-teardown and in-flight requests (deferred byte-range locks, CANCEL callbacks) across multichannel connections - winning that window is not deterministic, so AC:H is more honest; and C:H/I:H overstate a fix whose described effect is safe draining/waking of blocked work, i.e. preventing UAF of freed shared session objects, which manifests as crash/corruption (A:H) rather than data theft. AV:N and PR:L ARE defensible here, unlike sibling ksmbd bug CVE-2026-98112 which is local (netdev race): this one is reachable over SMB by an authenticated client that establishes a multichannel session. No EPSS, no CISA KEV, and no public PoC accompany the record, and there is no evidence of exploitation. Net: a real but conditional authenticated-remote DoS in a niche opt-in feature - meaningful for the small population that exports ksmbd shares, but the headline 8.8 overstates real-world priority; a tempered ~6.3 is more representative. Note the input CPE is only the generic 'linux:linux' string and does not encode the ksmbd component or fixed versions - rely on the kernel.org commit references for scoping. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated SMB3 client connects to a ksmbd-exported share, negotiates multichannel to bind multiple connections to one session, issues operations that leave requests pending (e.g. a deferred byte-range lock or a CANCEL), then races a LOGOFF or abrupt connection teardown against those in-flight requests. If teardown frees the shared session objects before all bound channels quiesce, the kernel accesses freed memory, causing corruption or a panic. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026
A use-after-free race condition in the Linux kernel's ksmbd in-kernel SMB3 server can crash the kernel (denial of service) when a session is torn down while multiple channels are bound to a session and deferred byte-range locks or pending CANCELs remain counted as running requests. Affected systems must have ksmbd enabled (CONFIG_SMB_SERVER) and exporting at least one SMB3 share, and an authenticated remote attacker (PR:L) must negotiate SMB3 multichannel to race a LOGOFF, synchronous CANCEL, or abrupt connection teardown against still-running requests; success is non-deterministic (AC:H). No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the impact is availability loss, not information disclosure or confidentiality/integrity compromise as some tags or the base CVSS may imply.
RemediationAI
Apply the upstream kernel patches referenced in the CVE (stable commits a7e6df0bb92642bee4431b2b85c69ada1e463b21 and d12168084c8c1b6d883c8eca5853929ac5136a9e) or upgrade to a kernel release that includes them; because exact tagged versions are not independently confirmed, consult your distribution's kernel advisory for the precise fixed package. If ksmbd is not required, disable it by ensuring CONFIG_SMB_SERVER is not set or by unloading the ksmbd module and stopping the service, which removes the attack surface entirely (trade-off: loss of in-kernel SMB file sharing). Where ksmbd must stay enabled, restrict access to trusted authenticated users and networks, and consider using a userspace SMB server such as Samba instead of ksmbd as a compensating control (trade-off: different security profile and performance characteristics). Blocking unauthorized SMB traffic or disabling SMB3 multichannel on clients can reduce exposure but may degrade throughput. No public exploit code has been identified, so patching remains the primary mitigation; forward the advisory URLs https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/a7e6df0bb92642bee4431b2b85c69ada1e463b21, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/d12168084c8c1b6d883c8eca5853929ac5136a9e, and https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-98115 to relevant teams.

Technical ContextAI · show details
ksmbd is an in-kernel SMB3 server (CONFIG_SMB_SERVER) that implements SMB3 multichannel, allowing a single SMB session to span multiple TCP connections (channels). Shared session objects are reference-counted and freed once the session is torn down. The vulnerability arises because teardown paths (LOGOFF, synchronous CANCEL, connection drop) do not wait for all channels to finish running requests before freeing shared session state. Specifically, a deferred byte-range lock remains counted as a running request until its file closes, and a pending CANCEL must invoke its cancellation callback to wake the blocked operation. Without proper synchronization, a bound channel can reference freed session objects, leading to a use-after-free and kernel crash. The upstream fix serializes session teardown with channel registration and previous-session cleanup, wakes blocked locks without unpublishing or modifying their file objects, invokes cancellation callbacks for synchronous CANCEL, keeps CHANGE_NOTIFY completion specific to the asynchronous path, and uses atomic work-state transitions to ensure LOGOFF, CANCEL, and connection teardown invoke cancellation callbacks exactly once. The root cause is a race condition (CWE-362) leading to use-after-free (CWE-416); per independent assessment the impact is denial of service, not the information disclosure suggested by the provided tag. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
ksmbd: safely drain sessions during logoff
SMB3 multichannel allows requests for one session to run on multiple connections. Wait for all channels bound to a session before freeing shared session objects.
A deferred byte-range lock remains counted as a running request and only wakes when its file closes. Wake blocked locks during the drain without unpublishing or modifying their file objects. Synchronous CANCEL requests must invoke their cancellation callback to wake pending operations, while CHANGE_NOTIFY completion remains specific to the asynchronous path.
Serialize session teardown with channel registration and previous-session cleanup, and use atomic work-state transitions so LOGOFF, CANCEL, and connection teardown invoke cancellation callbacks only once.
Executive ViewAI
A race condition in the Linux kernel's built-in SMB3 file-sharing service (ksmbd) can crash the kernel and take the affected server offline, disrupting access to shared files for everyone using it. Only Linux systems that run ksmbd and export at least one SMB3 share are exposed, and an attacker must already hold valid credentials and use multi-channel SMB3 negotiation, which limits both the population of at-risk systems and the ease of triggering the flaw. Because the outcome is a full system crash rather than data theft or tampering, leadership should treat this primarily as an availability and service-continuity risk to file-serving infrastructure until vendor kernel updates are applied.
Apply vendor patch.
