MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated workspace member who holds edit rights to at least one space (PR:L) - anonymous/unauthenticated exploitation is not possible. The attacker must reach the page-import feature and upload an archive; the archive must include exactly one nested ZIP, because the extractor auto-extracts a single nested level and applies no size/entry limits. Affected deployments run Docmost 0.21.0 through versions before 0.95.0. The outer upload must fit within the default 200 MB import limit (adjustable by operators). No user interaction by a victim is needed (UI:N). The most severe (cross-tenant) impact applies specifically to multi-tenant/shared instances; a single-tenant self-hosted install only affects itself. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but bounded availability risk. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, base 6.5) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable, low complexity, requires low privileges (an authenticated workspace member with edit rights to a space), no user interaction, and pure availability impact - no confidentiality or integrity loss. The 6.5 score is a MEDIUM, not a critical, and correctly reflects that exploitation needs valid credentials plus edit rights, not anonymous access. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit are present in the provided intelligence, so there is no evidence of active exploitation or automated weaponization; risk is theoretical-but-plausible rather than urgent. No SSVC decision data was supplied. The one signal that could argue for slightly higher priority is the multi-tenant blast radius: the description says disk exhaustion 'degrades or takes down the instance for all tenants,' meaning a single low-privileged tenant can affect co-tenants - an argument for S:C (scope change) that the vendor did not take. Overall: a real, patch-worthy DoS in a shared-hosting/SaaS context, low-to-moderate priority for single-tenant self-hosters. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who is (or who compromises) a workspace member with edit rights to any space uploads a specially crafted nested ZIP to the page-import feature. The outer archive stays under the default 200 MB upload limit but its single nested ZIP decompresses to multiple gigabytes; because the extractor caps neither total uncompressed size, per-entry size, nor entry count, extraction to the server temp directory exhausts disk, crashing the import worker and degrading the instance for all tenants. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, though the technique (a classic zip bomb) is well understood. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 24, 2026
Uncontrolled archive extraction in Docmost 0.21.0 through 0.95.0 lets any authenticated workspace member who holds edit rights to at least one space upload a crafted ZIP to the page-import feature and exhaust server disk space, crashing the import worker and degrading or taking down the instance for all tenants. The extractor imposes no cap on total uncompressed size, per-entry size, or entry count, and it automatically unwraps one nested ZIP, so an outer archive that fits inside the default 200 MB upload limit can expand to multiple gigabytes. This is a genuine but bounded availability-only risk (CVSS 6.5, AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H): confidentiality and integrity are unaffected, anonymous exploitation is not possible, and the most severe cross-tenant impact applies to shared or multi-tenant deployments, while a single-tenant self-hosted install only harms itself. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and the flaw is not listed in CISA KEV; EPSS data was not provided.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Docmost 0.95.0 (release tag v0.95.0), which is the exact version that ships the size/entry budgeting fix; the upstream change is commit 04110884b4e90a43cc5b337e063d0b7493be5da7 and also bumps the yauzl dependency from 3.2.1 to 3.4.0, so deployments building from source must update both the code and the lockfile. If immediate upgrade is not possible, apply compensating controls in order of effectiveness: (1) restrict who can reach the page-import feature - revoke space edit rights from untrusted members or disable the import feature at the application/proxy layer, accepting the loss of legitimate import functionality; (2) lower the configured upload size limit well below the 200 MB default, understanding that this reduces but does not eliminate the risk because nested-ZIP expansion multiplies the extracted size far beyond the uploaded bytes; (3) run the import worker in a container or namespace with a strict ephemeral-disk/ephemeral-storage quota and a dedicated small tmpfs or temp volume, so exhaustion kills the worker rather than the whole host - this trades a full-instance outage for failed imports; (4) cap per-process open-file/filesystem inode usage for the server process and alert on temp-directory growth or unusual drop in free disk on the Docmost host so an ongoing expansion is caught before it takes the instance down. Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption) in Docmost's server-side import pipeline. Docmost extracts uploaded ZIP archives in apps/server/src/integrations/import/utils/file.utils.ts using the yauzl library in lazyEntries mode, and the pre-0.95.0 code path iterated entries and wrote each one to the server temp directory without tracking cumulative uncompressed bytes or entry counts. Because the routine also recursed one level into a nested ZIP found inside the outer archive, and because ZIP compression ratios can exceed 1000:1, a modest upload can inflate into gigabytes or an enormous number of small files; the 200 MB default upload limit therefore does not bound disk consumption. The upstream fix (commit 04110884b4e90a43cc5b337e063d0b7493be5da7) introduces a shared SizeBudget passed through the recursive extraction calls and derived from the compressed size times a COMPRESSION_HEADROOM of 10, with a floor of MIN_EXTRACTED_BYTES = 256 MB, plus a MAX_ENTRIES ceiling of 250,000, and enables yauzl's validateEntrySizes option; the yauzl dependency is bumped from 3.2.1 to 3.4.0 (dropping the buffer-crc32 transitive dependency). The CPE cpe:2.3:a:docmost:docmost:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* is a wildcard entry, so version scoping must come from the advisory: affected versions begin at 0.21.0 when the import feature shipped in this form and end before 0.95.0.

Authenticated member with space edit rights gives PR:L; network-reachable import endpoint and reliable zip-bomb give AV:N/AC:L; pure disk-exhaustion DoS yields A:H with C:N/I:N; S:U kept though multi-tenant impact makes S:C arguable.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
Docmost is open-source collaborative wiki and documentation software. From 0.21.0 until 0.95.0, any authenticated workspace member with edit rights to a space can upload an archive to the page-import feature whose ZIP extraction routine does not limit total uncompressed size, per-entry size, or entry count. The extractor writes entries to the server temp directory and automatically extracts one nested ZIP, allowing an outer upload within the default 200 MB limit to expand by multiple GB. The resulting disk exhaustion can crash the import worker and degrade or take down the instance for all tenants. This issue is fixed in version 0.95.0.
