MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated account holding the workspace ADMIN role and use of the workspace invitation flow to invite an external email address with the OWNER role. Exploitation is LIMITED by: (1) attacker must already possess ADMIN privileges (PR:H) - this is not remotely reachable by an anonymous or low-privilege user; (2) the invited external party must accept the emailed invitation for OWNER permissions to take effect (UI:R). It affects default configurations of Docmost prior to 0.90.1, as the role ceiling is simply absent from the invite privilege check. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but access-gated privilege-escalation flaw (CWE-269), not an inflated high-CVSS finding. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:U) confirms exploitation requires an already-authenticated workspace ADMIN (PR:H) plus the invited party accepting the invitation (UI:R), which sharply limits the population of viable attackers to insiders or a compromised admin account. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC are present, so there is no evidence of widespread or automated exploitation - the realistic threat model is a malicious/colluding admin establishing a persistent backdoor OWNER, i.e. targeted insider abuse rather than mass exploitation. The C:H component in the NVD vector is arguably generous given the immediate effect is granting a role; the more precise impact is on integrity/control of the workspace (an OWNER can alter everything), so I lean toward I:H over the input's I:L. Missing signals to note explicitly: no EPSS/KEV/POC data was supplied, and the referenced fix PR diff does not actually contain the role-ceiling enforcement change, so the code-level fix could not be independently verified from the provided evidence. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A workspace administrator (or an attacker who has phished/compromised an admin session) opens the standard invitation flow and invites an external email address, selecting the OWNER role - a level above the admin's own. Because the invite logic never enforces a role ceiling, once that external user accepts the emailed invitation their new account is provisioned with full OWNER privileges, creating a durable backdoor owner or promoting a colluding outsider to the highest workspace tier. No public exploit code is identified; the flaw is trivial to trigger through the normal UI once admin access exists. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 24, 2026
Workspace ADMIN accounts in Docmost prior to 0.90.1 can mint OWNER-level accounts through the workspace invitation flow, because the invite path never enforces a role ceiling that would stop an administrator from granting privileges above their own. An attacker who already holds the ADMIN role can invite an external email address with the OWNER role; once that invitation is accepted, the resulting account holds the highest privilege level in the workspace, enabling a persistent backdoor OWNER account or the elevation of a colluding external user. Exploitation is access-gated rather than anonymous - it requires an authenticated HIGH-privilege (ADMIN) account and the invitee must accept the emailed invitation (PR:H, UI:R) - and no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Docmost 0.90.1 (https://github.com/docmost/docmost/releases/tag/v0.90.1), which closes the missing role-ceiling check in the invitation flow; the advisory at https://github.com/docmost/docmost/security/advisories/GHSA-84fx-mvqx-p5gx and the referenced PR/commit document the change. If upgrading immediately is not possible, treat ADMIN as a trusted role only: audit the current member list and every pending invitation for unexpected OWNER grants and revoke or downgrade them, restrict who may hold ADMIN by managing role assignment outside the application (database or admin tooling) while the fix is pending, disable or tightly gate the external-email invitation capability so that only a small operator group can send invites, and alert on any new OWNER role assignment or OWNER-level invitation. Note the trade-offs: restricting invitations disrupts normal onboarding of external collaborators, and out-of-band role management removes in-product self-service for workspace setup. Because exploitation requires an already-privileged ADMIN account, credential hygiene and session revocation for departing or untrusted administrators are meaningful compensating controls, but they do not remove the underlying escalation path for an insider ADMIN, so patching to 0.90.1 remains the only complete fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Docmost is an open-source collaborative wiki and documentation platform, typically self-hosted, with a Node.js/NestJS-style backend and a React web client (the linked pull request shows client-side changes under apps/client). The flaw is classified CWE-269 (Improper Privilege Management): the invitation flow validates that a user may invite others, but does not compare the role being granted against the inviter's own role, so the implicit 'role ceiling' - normally the rule that you cannot grant a privilege level you do not hold - is simply absent from the invite privilege check. The affected CPE, cpe:2.3:a:docmost:docmost:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, is unbounded and therefore covers every Docmost release before 0.90.1 in default configuration. The CVSS vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:L describes a network-reachable weakness that is only usable from a high-privilege authenticated session (PR:H), depends on the invited external party accepting the invitation (UI:R), stays within a single security scope (S:U), and yields high confidentiality and integrity impact (full OWNER access to workspace content plus the ability to alter roles and membership) with limited availability impact.

1DescriptionCVE.org
Docmost is open-source collaborative wiki and documentation software. Prior to 0.90.1, an authenticated workspace ADMIN can use the workspace invitation flow to invite an external email address with the OWNER role because the role ceiling does not prevent ADMIN users from granting privileges above their own. When the invitation is accepted, the new account receives OWNER-level permissions, allowing the ADMIN to create a backdoor OWNER account or promote a colluding external user to the workspace's highest privilege level. This issue is fixed in version 0.90.1.
