| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the victim to open an attacker-crafted repository specifically as an 'untrusted workspace' in Amazon Kiro IDE (version before 1.0.242) and then send any message to the agent, which causes the agent's file-write tool to write attacker-controlled content into the auto-loaded global configuration directory (~/.kiro). Limiting factors: user interaction is mandatory (UI:A in the vendor vector) - the attacker cannot trigger the write without a victim actively running the agent against the malicious workspace; exploitation is indirect via prompt injection rather than a direct network request; and versions 1.0.242 and later are fixed. The 'untrusted workspace' mode plus agent invocation is the concrete precondition, not a generic default-remote exposure. |
| Impact | The vendor CVSS 4.0 score of 8.6 (High) reflects network-reachable, low-complexity delivery with no attacker authentication (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N) but explicitly requires active user interaction (UI:A) and impacts only the vulnerable system (VC:H/VI:H/VA:H, SC/SI/SA:N). The real-world trigger chain is narrower than the raw score suggests: exploitation is an indirect prompt-injection (CWE-829) that only fires when a user opens a crafted repository as an *untrusted workspace* and then sends any message to the agent - so the attacker cannot act autonomously and depends on victim behavior, which in practice makes attack complexity higher than the AC:L in the 4.0 vector implies. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - this is a proactively patched, vendor-reported (AMZN) issue rather than an observed in-the-wild campaign. Signals are internally consistent (network vector, user-interaction-gated, patch available) with no direct contradictions, though the 4.0 AC:L combined with UI:A slightly overstates ease given the specific 'untrusted workspace + send a message' precondition. Net: a genuine and worth-prioritizing issue for organizations that use Kiro against third-party/untrusted code, but not a mass-exploitation emergency given the narrow deployment footprint and interaction requirement. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker publishes a repository containing hidden instructions embedded in files that the agent ingests into its context. A developer clones it, opens it in Kiro as an untrusted workspace, and sends any message to the agent; the injected instructions cause the file-write tool to modify the auto-loaded global configuration under ~/.kiro, persistently poisoning the agent's behavior across future sessions. No public exploit code has been identified, and the attack requires the victim to actively run the agent in the malicious workspace. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv2 – Sep 24, 2026
Amazon Kiro IDE versions before 1.0.242 can have attacker-controlled content written into the agent's auto-loaded global configuration directory (~/.kiro) when a user opens a crafted repository as an untrusted workspace and then sends any message to the agent. The flaw (CWE-829, inclusion of functionality from an untrusted control sphere) is an indirect prompt-injection chain: the agent's file-write tool is steered by repository-supplied instructions rather than by a direct network request, so the attacker does not need credentials (CVSS PR:N) but does depend on victim interaction (CVSS UI:A). Exploitation is not confirmed as active and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis. Risk is rated High (vendor CVSS 4.0 base 8.6; independent CVSS 3.1 assessment AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:H/A:L), with the dominant impact being integrity compromise of the developer's global Kiro configuration.
Earlier versions of this analysis (1)
Agent prompt injection in Amazon Kiro IDE versions before 1.0.242 enables remote unauthenticated attackers to poison the IDE's global configuration by luring a victim into opening a crafted repository as an untrusted workspace and sending any message to the agent. The file write tool lets injected instructions escape the workspace and persist in ~/.kiro, producing high confidentiality and integrity impact with low availability impact (CVSS 8.8, AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C). No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the mandatory user interaction (UI:R) limits mass exploitation; the issue is a genuine, prioritizable concern for organizations running Kiro IDE but not a mass-exploitation emergency.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Amazon Kiro IDE 1.0.242 or later, per the vendor bulletin (https://aws.amazon.com/security/security-bulletins/2026-117-aws/) and the 1.0.242 changelog (https://kiro.dev/changelog/ide/1-0-242/); the CVE data lists the patch as available from vendor. Anyone who ran the agent in an untrusted workspace on an earlier release should inspect the global Kiro configuration directory (~/.kiro) and remove any entries they did not create, since injected content there may be auto-loaded in subsequent sessions. Until upgrading, the effective compensating control is to avoid running the agent against repositories opened as untrusted workspaces - open untrusted code in a plain editor or in a sandbox/container with a disposable home directory so that writes to ~/.kiro cannot persist - at the cost of losing agent assistance for those repositories, and additionally treat the global config directory as sensitive and monitor it for unexpected modifications, with the trade-off of added manual review overhead. Note that the vulnerability is only reachable when the victim actively runs the agent and sends a message, so simply cloning a malicious repository without invoking the agent does not itself trigger the write.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Amazon Kiro IDE is an AI-assisted development environment whose agent operates on a workspace through tools such as file read and file write, and which automatically loads global user configuration from ~/.kiro at startup. CWE-829 describes the root cause class: functionality or content originating from an untrusted control sphere (the attacker-crafted repository) is incorporated into a trusted execution/configuration sphere (the agent's context and global config). Instead of a memory-safety or injection-parsing bug, this is a trust-boundary failure in agent context assembly - repository content is treated as instruction-bearing context without adequate isolation from privileged configuration paths. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:amazon:kiro_ide:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* as recorded in the CVE data, narrowed by EUVD to versions from 0 up to but not including 1.0.242. Because the write target is the auto-loaded global configuration directory, persistence is possible across later sessions if malicious entries are present, which is why the vendor advises reviewing ~/.kiro on any instance that previously ran the agent against an untrusted workspace.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
The file write tool in Amazon Kiro IDE versions before 1.0.242 might allow remote unauthenticated actors to inject crafted instructions into the agent's context. When a user runs the agent in a crafted repository as an untrusted workspace, sending any message can cause agent modifications to auto-loaded global configuration paths.
We recommend you upgrade to Kiro IDE version 1.0.242 or later. Users who ran the agent in an untrusted workspace on an earlier version should also review the global Kiro configuration directory (~/.kiro) for entries they did not create.
Executive ViewAI
Amazon Kiro IDE versions prior to 1.0.242 are vulnerable to an indirect prompt-injection attack that allows attacker-controlled content to be written into the developer's global configuration directory (~/.kiro) when a crafted repository is opened as an untrusted workspace and then any message is sent to the agent. This unauthenticated but user-interaction-dependent flaw compromises the integrity of developer configurations, potentially enabling further malicious behavior on affected workstations. Leadership should prioritize remediation because developer environments are high-value targets and the vulnerability affects all teams using Kiro IDE.
