Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Requires the ath11k driver to be active on a supported Qualcomm Wi-Fi adapter (tested on WCN6855 hw2.1 PCI) AND operating in the DP_RX_DECAP_TYPE_NATIVE_WIFI receive-decapsulation mode; the trigger is a received packet whose length exceeds the maximum native Wi-Fi header length, which per the description originates from the hardware/RX path and can plausibly be induced by a malformed over-the-air frame. Limiting factors: attacker must be adjacent (over the radio, AV:A) rather than remote across the internet; the specific native-wifi decap path must be in use; and observed impact is kernel stack corruption (crash) with no confirmed path to code execution. No authentication (PR:N) or user interaction (UI:N) is required per the CVSS vector.

Impact

The NVD/Linux base score of 8.8 (AV:A/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/C:H/I:H/A:H) overstates real-world risk. This is a receive-path memory-safety bug in the ath11k driver: 'in certain cases, hardware might provide packets with a length greater than the maximum native Wi-Fi header length,' triggering out-of-bounds header access and confirmed kernel stack corruption. The symptom evidence (KASAN-style stack corruption trace through ath11k_dp_rx_h_mpdu/wbm_err) indicates a crash-dominant DoS outcome rather than a demonstrated confidentiality/integrity compromise, so C:H/I:H/A:H (full RCE-grade impact) is not substantiated by the description. AC:L is also questionable: exploitation requires the driver to be operating in DP_RX_DECAP_TYPE_NATIVE_WIFI decap mode AND an over-length/malformed frame reaching that path, which is closer to AC:H. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit are present in the input - no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Net: a legitimate memory-corruption fix worth patching on affected Qualcomm-WiFi hosts, but NOT a widespread-exploitation emergency; realistic impact is device/kernel crash. Verify true impact ceiling with the vendor - stack corruption is theoretically escalatable, but nothing here confirms code execution.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker within radio range (or a malicious/compromised access point) transmits crafted 802.11 frames to a host whose ath11k adapter uses native Wi-Fi decapsulation; the hardware hands the driver a frame longer than the maximum native Wi-Fi header, and ath11k_dp_rx_h_undecap_nwifi() reads/writes header fields past the buffer, corrupting the kernel stack and crashing the system. No authentication or user interaction is required, but no public exploit code exists and the outcome observed is kernel stack corruption (denial of service) rather than proven code execution.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026

Out-of-bounds access to native Wi-Fi header fields in the Linux kernel's ath11k driver can corrupt kernel stack memory when a received frame's length exceeds the maximum native Wi-Fi header size in the DP_RX_DECAP_TYPE_NATIVE_WIFI decapsulation path (ath11k_dp_rx_h_undecap_nwifi). Unauthenticated adjacent attackers within radio range (AV:A, PR:N, UI:N) against systems running the ath11k driver on supported Qualcomm Wi-Fi hardware - tested on WCN6855 hw2.1 PCI with WLAN.HSP.1.1-04685-QCAHSPSWPL_V1_V2_SILICONZ_IOE-1 firmware - can trigger a malformed over-the-air frame that leads to kernel stack corruption and a crash; no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis. Independent assessment rates this CVSS 3.1 AV:A/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/C:L/I:L/A:H, meaning the vendor/NVD score of 8.8 overstates real-world risk: the trigger path must be active, the attacker must be radio-adjacent, and the confirmed outcome is memory corruption/crash rather than demonstrated code execution.

Vendor-released patch: Linux 6.12.111 and 6.18.53 (mainline 7.2); apply these kernel versions or the backported upstream commits 1c0a13be76db3c1cf774aa11d9f4c3f8239ac567, 6b471e9aefee9ed73278eb1141e0d8530a56fae9 and 00738665c875ab34efa7126ea63c9d70b48ee169 via the stable tree (https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/1c0a13be76db3c1cf774aa11d9f4c3f8239ac567, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/6b471e9aefee9ed73278eb1141e0d8530a56fae9, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/00738665c875ab34efa7126ea63c9d70b48ee169) or the corresponding distribution kernel advisory. Because the flaw sits on the receive path of a radio driver, there is no network-level or config-only fix that fully removes the risk; the only reliable remediation is updating the kernel. If patching cannot be done immediately, the practical compensating control is to stop using ath11k-backed Wi-Fi on the system: blacklist or unbind the ath11k module (modprobe.blacklist=ath11k or unbinding the PCI device), which removes the attack surface entirely but disables the affected wireless adapter, or substitute a non-ath11k NIC/USB Wi-Fi adapter, which restores connectivity at the cost of hardware changes or additional supply-chain review. Restricting deployment of the affected adapters in RF-exposed areas (for example, endpoints near public spaces) reduces the adjacent-attacker window, though it is fragile and distance-dependent. Note that MAC-layer protections do not address this driver-side bug, and monitoring should focus on detecting repeated kernel traces containing ath11k_dp_rx_h_undecap/ath11k_dp_rx_wbm_err as an indicator of malformed-frame triggers. No vendor-released patch is missing here - a fix exists, so prioritise upgrading over long-term workarounds.

Technical ContextAI · show details

ath11k is the upstream Linux mac80211 driver for Qualcomm Wi-Fi 6/6E chipsets (WCN6855 and relatives). Frames are received through the driver's data path directly from hardware into SKBs, and the decapsulation helper ath11k_dp_rx_h_undecap_nwifi() rewrites the 802.11 header fields for the DP_RX_DECAP_TYPE_NATIVE_WIFI mode. The function assumed any RX buffer it saw had a header no longer than the maximum native Wi-Fi header, so it performed field reads/writes without first validating skb->len; when hardware delivers an over-long frame, those accesses run past the intended header region of the SKB, producing out-of-bounds read/write of adjacent memory. The reported symptom is kernel stack corruption along the WBM error path ath11k_dp_rx_process_wbm_err -> ath11k_dp_rx_wbm_err -> ath11k_dp_rx_h_mpdu -> ath11k_dp_rx_h_undecap -> ath11k_dp_rx_h_undecap_nwifi. CWE was not supplied by the source, but the flaw class is a missing length/sanity check prior to memory access, i.e. out-of-bounds read/write (CWE-125/CWE-787 family). Affected CPE records resolve to the Linux kernel itself (cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux), since the vulnerable code ships in-tree; the exposure is limited to hardware/firmware combinations that actually exercise the native-wifi decapsulation path. The upstream fix - ported from an equivalent ath12k discussion/patch - adds a sanity check on the SKB length before the header is processed.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

wifi: ath11k: fix invalid data access in ath11k_dp_rx_h_undecap_nwifi

In certain cases, hardware might provide packets with a length greater than the maximum native Wi-Fi header length. This can lead to accessing and modifying fields in the header within the ath11k_dp_rx_h_undecap_nwifi() function for the DP_RX_DECAP_TYPE_NATIVE_WIFI decap type and potentially result in invalid data access and memory corruption.

Kernel stack is corrupted in: ath11k_dp_rx_h_undecap+0x6b0/0x6b0 [ath11k] Call trace: ath11k_dp_rx_h_mpdu+0x0/0x2e8 [ath11k] ath11k_dp_rx_h_mpdu+0x1e0/0x2e8 [ath11k] ath11k_dp_rx_wbm_err+0x1e0/0x450 [ath11k] ath11k_dp_rx_process_wbm_err+0x2fc/0x460 [ath11k] ath11k_dp_service_srng+0x2e0/0x348 [ath11k]

Add a sanity check before processing the SKB to prevent invalid data access in the undecap native Wi-Fi function for the DP_RX_DECAP_TYPE_NATIVE_WIFI decap type.

This adapted from the discussion/patch of the ath12k driver [1].

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Linux systems using Qualcomm ath11k Wi-Fi hardware, including the tested WCN6855 platform, face a high-severity kernel memory-corruption risk that a nearby unauthenticated attacker can trigger with a malformed wireless frame, causing crashes and availability loss. The issue is confined to devices with the affected driver and active receive path, and while no public exploit identified at time of analysis, an unpatched outage could disrupt wireless-dependent operations. Leadership should prioritize validation and deployment of the vendor patch, especially for business-critical Linux endpoints, access points, or appliances using affected Qualcomm adapters.
