Vulnerability Assessment
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires local access to the RDMA subsystem - specifically the ability to call ib_umem_get()/register a user memory region via RDMA verbs, which presupposes an InfiniBand or RoCE-capable device and a user granted access to it (PR:L). The overflow paths (iova truncation, length-vs-iova check, and >4G GENMASK overflow) are principally reachable and impactful on 32-bit kernels; 64-bit builds are far less exposed because iova is natively u64. This is not remotely reachable (AV:L) and requires no user interaction, but it is gated by RDMA hardware presence, verbs access permissions, and, for the most severe cases, a 32-bit architecture. |
| Impact | The published CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H = 7.8) rates this as a high-severity local privilege/corruption issue, but that C:H/I:H/A:H triad overstates what the patch actually addresses. The fix hardens boundary conditions in RDMA/umem's ib_umem_find_best_pgsz(): a u64 iova truncated when passed as a narrower argument, missing checks that length fits the iova, and lengths >4G overflowing a GENMASK. These are integer truncation/overflow correctness defects that primarily bite on 32-bit kernels; the realistic consequence is a miscomputed page size during RDMA memory-region registration, which is far more likely to cause a mismatch/crash or bad DMA mapping than a clean read/write primitive. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit are present in the provided data, so all exploitation signals point to no known real-world exploitation - this is a proactively-patched hardening fix, not an actively exploited threat. Net: treat as low-to-moderate real-world priority (crash-dominant, hardware- and architecture-gated), well below the 7.8 headline. Note conflict: AC:L in the vendor vector understates the practical difficulty, since triggering requires RDMA-capable hardware and the overflow paths are chiefly reachable on 32-bit builds - verify affected configuration before prioritizing. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A local user with access to RDMA verbs (an InfiniBand/RoCE device) on a 32-bit kernel registers a user memory region with a crafted iova/length that triggers truncation or a GENMASK overflow, causing ib_umem_find_best_pgsz() to select an incorrect page size. This yields a mismatched/incorrect DMA mapping that most plausibly corrupts kernel state or crashes the system. No public proof-of-concept is identified in the provided data. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026
Boundary-condition mishandling in the Linux kernel's RDMA user-memory path (ib_umem_find_best_pgsz()) lets a local user who can register a user memory region through RDMA verbs drive out-of-range iova/length arithmetic into a GENMASK, producing incorrect page-size masks and, in the worst case, kernel memory corruption or a crash. Exposure is narrow and architecture-dependent: the truncation and >4G GENMASK overflow cases are principally reachable on 32-bit kernels where iova is passed as a 32-bit value, while 64-bit builds are far less affected, and access is gated by PR:L (an RDMA/InfiniBand or RoCE-capable device plus permission to call ib_umem_get()). Our independent assessment is less severe than the published 7.8 (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:H), since the patch addresses arithmetic on page-size masks rather than a direct attacker-controlled heap write; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not in CISA KEV.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Linux 6.12.111, 6.18.53, or 7.2 (or a later stable release on the corresponding branch), which are the first versions containing the ib_umem_find_best_pgsz() hardening; the individual stable commits are https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/09ea6837a0434fb4db99528a5055b6d822135dcf, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/ae3cf7d2c4d506c5c91746321644e1a08d989e2a, and https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/5fc5b73109540809b094710fac44da81dd8a3ff8, and the CVE record is at https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-97421. If patching must be deferred, the most effective compensating control is to remove unprivileged access to the RDMA userspace interface - restrict ownership and mode of /dev/infiniband/uverbs* so only fully trusted accounts (or a dedicated group) can open it, and use the RDMA cgroup controller or container device whitelisting to confine verbs access; the trade-off is that ordinary users and unprivileged container workloads lose RDMA functionality entirely. Because the most severe truncation and >4G GENMASK cases are essentially 32-bit-only, migrating affected hosts to a 64-bit kernel or running the RDMA workloads on 64-bit hardware materially reduces exposure, at the cost of re-deploying 32-bit embedded or legacy systems that cannot move. Enforcing an LSM policy (SELinux/AppArmor) that denies access to the RDMA device nodes for non-RDMA processes adds defense in depth, but it complements rather than replaces the upstream fix since a privileged-enough local user with legitimate verbs access can still reach the vulnerable path.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw lives in the RDMA subsystem's user-memory (umem) layer. When a process registers a memory region (MR) via RDMA verbs, the kernel calls ib_umem_get() to pin pages and then ib_umem_find_best_pgsz(), which selects the largest page size the MR can support for a given iova, length, and set of candidate page sizes - a computation heavily dependent on masking with GENMASK. Three corner cases are addressed by the fix: (1) umem->iova is a u64, but on 32-bit kernels the function argument could be a narrower type, silently truncating iova and yielding a wrong mask; (2) the length was not checked against the iova so the two could combine into an overflowing range; and (3) lengths greater than 4G overflow the GENMASK expression itself, since the mask is built on unsigned long, which is 32 bits on 32-bit kernels. The supplied data assigns no CWE (CWE: N/A), but the 'Buffer Overflow' tag together with the commit message places this in the integer truncation/overflow class leading to out-of-bounds address or size computation. The affected code predates the fix in commit 1da177e4c3f41524e886b7f1b8a0c1fc7321cac2, and the CPE entries cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:* denote the upstream kernel rather than a single distribution, so downstream kernels rebuilt from unpatched stable branches inherit the defect.

4DescriptionCVE.org
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
RDMA/umem: Be careful about boundary conditions in ib_umem_find_best_pgsz()
Several corner cases, especially important on 32 bits:
- umem->iova is u64, the function argument should pass in u64 or
iova will be truncated
- Check that the length is not too large for the iova
- Check that lengths > 4G don't overflow the GENMASK
Executive ViewAI
A high-severity flaw in the Linux kernel's RDMA user-memory path can let an authenticated local user on RDMA/InfiniBand or RoCE-enabled hosts trigger incorrect page-size mask arithmetic, potentially causing kernel memory corruption or a system crash. The practical risk is narrow and mainly affects 32-bit kernels, while 64-bit deployments are far less exposed; no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Security leadership should prioritize patching RDMA-capable Linux systems, especially where local access is broadly granted, because an availability loss on those systems can disrupt critical workloads.
