DescriptionCVE.org

RabbitMQ is a messaging and streaming broker. Prior to versions 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.6, and 4.3.0, The cowboy WebSocket options at line 117 set compress => true, enabling RFC 7692 permessage-deflate negotiation. The handler does not set max_frame_size, so cowboy's default of infinity applies. cowlib's cow_ws:parse_payload/9 calls zlib:inflate/2 on the compressed payload with no output-size limit. An attacker can negotiate permessage-deflate during the WebSocket upgrade and send a frame containing a zlib bomb (e.g. 50 KB → 5 GB). Decompression occurs in the connection process before websocket_handle/2 ever sees the MQTT bytes. An unauthenticated attacker can crash a RabbitMQ node running the Web-MQTT plugin by sending a single highly-compressed WebSocket frame (a few KB on the wire) that inflates to gigabytes in memory. The cowboy WebSocket handler decompresses the entire frame before the MQTT CONNECT packet is processed, so no credentials are required. Preconditions include rabbitmq_web_mqtt plugin enabled (not default, but common for browser clients) Network reachability to port 15675/15676 No authentication required. This issue is fixed in versions 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.6, and 4.3.0.

AnalysisAI

Memory-exhaustion denial of service in RabbitMQ's Web-MQTT plugin (rabbitmq_web_mqtt) lets an unauthenticated remote attacker crash a broker node by sending a single WebSocket frame that is highly compressed and inflates to gigabytes in memory. Affected are RabbitMQ server releases prior to 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.6 and 4.3.0 whenever the Web-MQTT plugin is enabled and its listener (TCP 15675/15676) is network-reachable; the attacker only needs to negotiate RFC 7692 permessage-deflate during the upgrade and then send a zlib bomb, since decompression happens in the connection process before any MQTT CONNECT credentials are evaluated. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Requires the rabbitmq_web_mqtt plugin to be enabled (not on by default, but commonly enabled for browser-based MQTT clients) and network reachability to its listener on TCP 15675/15676. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment This is a genuine, high-priority availability risk with an important caveat. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Vendor-released patch: upgrade to RabbitMQ 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.6 or 4.3.0, choosing the maintenance line that matches your current deployment and following the release notes and the advisory at https://github.com/rabbitmq/rabbitmq-server/security/advisories/GHSA-gmgx-hhg5-43gr plus the fixed release pages https://github.com/rabbitmq/rabbitmq-server/releases/tag/v4.2.6 and https://github.com/rabbitmq/rabbitmq-server/releases/tag/v4.3.0; note the documented Erlang/OTP compatibility requirements, since nodes will fail to start on too-old Erlang versions. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, inventory every RabbitMQ server and determine which nodes run the rabbitmq_web_mqtt plugin and expose listeners on TCP 15675/15676; where the plugin is not required, stop it and remove the listener, and where it is required, restrict network access to those ports to trusted sources only. …
