Exploitation Conditions

Requires ALL of the following to co-occur, none of which is a default: (1) the RabbitMQ Shovel plugin enabled, (2) shovel URIs configured with credentials embedded directly in the URI (amqp://user:password@host/), (3) the broker log level raised to DEBUG (explicitly non-default), and (4) at least one shovel configured as autodelete via src-delete-after=N whose completion triggers the state-map log write. The attacker must also already possess read access to the broker's log file(s) or any downstream log aggregation. Because the vector is AV:L/PR:H, the effective exploitation ceiling is a locally-privileged actor or a log-consumer with existing filesystem/log access - there is no remote or unauthenticated path.

Impact

This is a genuinely low-to-moderate real-world priority despite disclosing credentials. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:P/PR:H/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N, 5.6 MEDIUM) is internally consistent with the description: exploitation is LOCAL (AV:L) because the attacker must already have read access to the broker's log files, requires HIGH privileges (PR:H) to reach that file/host, and carries an Attack Requirement (AT:P) because the leak only occurs when an autodelete shovel happens to complete. Impact is confidentiality-only (VC:H, VI:N, VA:N) - no integrity or availability effect. There is NO EPSS score, NO CISA KEV listing, and NO public exploit, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - treat this as a hardening/hygiene fix, not an emergency. The strongest limiting factor is the stacked non-default preconditions (DEBUG logging is explicitly non-default, Shovel plugin must be enabled, credentials must be embedded directly in URIs, and the shovel must be autodelete-configured), which together make widespread opportunistic exploitation implausible. No signals conflict; all point to a low-urgency, high-precondition information disclosure. The only caveat: once creds land in a log, they may propagate to centralized log aggregation/SIEM systems, widening who can read them beyond the local host.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An operator has RabbitMQ's Shovel plugin enabled with amqp://user:password@host URIs and, for troubleshooting, has raised the log level to DEBUG. When an autodelete shovel (src-delete-after=N) completes, the worker logs its full state map with the decrypted URI, writing the plaintext password to the broker log file. A user or process with read access to that log file (or to downstream log aggregation) then harvests the AMQP credentials. No public proof-of-concept is available.

Alert me

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 23, 2026

RabbitMQ brokers running the Shovel plugin can write decrypted shovel URIs - including credentials embedded directly in the URI (amqp://user:password@host/) - into the broker log file when DEBUG-level logging is enabled and a shovel configured with src-delete-after=N (autodelete) completes and is torn down. The exposure is confined to log files: anyone who already holds read access to the broker log or a downstream log aggregation pipeline can recover working AMQP credentials, which they can then use to authenticate to the message broker. Exploitation is not remote or unauthenticated (the vendor-adjacent assessment rates it CVSS:3.1 AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N with high confidentiality impact only), and it requires a chain of non-default conditions: the Shovel plugin enabled, credentials embedded in shovel URIs, DEBUG logging explicitly turned on, and an autodelete shovel. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not confirmed actively exploited (no CISA KEV listing); no EPSS score was supplied with the source data.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to RabbitMQ 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.6, or 4.3.0 - choose the maintenance release matching your current series - as documented in GHSA-9wm4-9m6g-w38x (https://github.com/rabbitmq/rabbitmq-server/security/advisories/GHSA-9wm4-9m6g-w38x) and the v4.2.6/v4.3.0 release tags. Where immediate upgrade is not possible, the highest-value compensating control is to revert the broker log level from DEBUG to the default (INFO/WARNING): this removes the trigger entirely, with the trade-off that the verbose diagnostics DEBUG provides for shovel and connection troubleshooting are lost, so re-enable it only in isolated, short-lived debugging sessions, never in production. Second, eliminate the sensitive data at the source by removing credentials embedded in shovel URIs - use RabbitMQ credential/parameter mechanisms or per-shovel users instead - while noting that any URI already written to logs remains compromised and must be treated as disclosed. Third, rotate every AMQP credential that has ever appeared in an amqp://user:password@host/ shovel URI, since rotation invalidates the leaked secret but requires coordinated updates to all clients using it. Fourth, restrict read access to broker log files and any log aggregation/shipping endpoints to the minimum necessary operators, and apply redaction or scrubbing rules at the log pipeline so decrypted URI patterns are filtered before storage - this limits blast radius but does not stop the secret from being written locally. Finally, prefer non-autodelete shovel configurations (removing src-delete-after) to avoid the specific shutdown path that emits the state map, understanding that persistent shovels change resource lifecycle behavior and must be monitored.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-532 (Insertion of Sensitive Information into Log File). RabbitMQ's Shovel plugin stores shovel configuration in an Erlang state map, and inbound/outbound URIs that carry embedded credentials are obfuscated at rest using the credentials_obfuscation library. Before use they are decrypted via credentials_obfuscation:decrypt inside rabbit_shovel_util:deobfuscated_uris/2, meaning the in-memory state map holds cleartext URIs. When an autodelete shovel (configured with src-delete-after = N) finishes its work and is shut down, the code path invokes ?LOG_DEBUG with the format string "shutting down Shovel '~ts', ... Shovel state: ~tp", passing [Name, State] and thus printing the entire state map, including the 'uris' field. The rabbit_shovel_worker module defines no format_status/1,2 callback that would redact sensitive fields before formatting, so the full decrypted URI lands in the log. The affected component is the RabbitMQ server (CPE cpe:2.3:a:rabbitmq:rabbitmq-server:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, i.e. all versions before the fixed releases) with the shovel plugin loaded; the exposure surface is the broker log file and any log shipping/aggregation that consumes it, not the AMQP listener itself.

DescriptionCVE.org

RabbitMQ is a messaging and streaming broker. Prior to versions 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.6, and 4.3.0, ?LOG_DEBUG("shutting down Shovel '~ts', ... Shovel state: ~tp", [Name, State]) formats the entire state map. The 'uris' field holds plaintext URIs after credentials_obfuscation:decrypt (called in rabbit_shovel_util:deobfuscated_uris/2). No format_status/1,2 callback exists in rabbit_shovel_worker to redact it. Triggered when an autodelete shovel (src-delete-after = N) completes. With DEBUG logging enabled, autodelete-shovel completion writes the full shovel state map , including decrypted amqp://user:password@host/ URIs , to the broker log file. Preconditions include Shovel plugin enabled with URI-embedded credentials DEBUG log level (non-default) Autodelete shovel configuration Attacker has log read access. This issue is fixed in versions 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, 4.2.6, and 4.3.0.
