MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the Caddy site configuration resolves the http.request.body placeholder (e.g. referenced in a directive/Caddyfile that runs through the replacer) so that modules/caddyhttp/replacer.go reads the full body via unbounded io.Copy before request-body size-limit middleware applies; this is NOT a default Caddy configuration. Given that config, no authentication or user interaction is needed - any remote client can send large or streamed request bodies. The primary limiting factor is this operator-config prerequisite; without a config path that resolves http.request.body, the vulnerable code is not reached. Impact is limited to availability (memory exhaustion / process termination) with no data exposure. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but bounded availability-only issue, not a high-severity emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VA:L, 6.9) reflects a network-reachable, unauthenticated, low-complexity DoS with only limited availability impact and zero confidentiality/integrity impact - consistent with the description (memory exhaustion → process termination). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no independent SSVC decision data were provided, so there is no evidence of active exploitation or automatability from the input. The single most important qualifier is a deployment condition the CVSS vector does not capture: exploitation only works if the operator's Caddy configuration actually references the http.request.body placeholder (resolved in modules/caddyhttp/replacer.go), which is not a default configuration. Therefore the PR:N/AV:N metrics correctly describe the attacker (any remote unauthenticated client) but overstate real-world exposure, because most Caddy deployments never resolve http.request.body. Treat this as a medium-priority patch for sites that use the placeholder and as low priority otherwise. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker sends HTTP requests with very large or slowly-streamed request bodies to a Caddy 2.11.3-or-earlier instance whose config references the http.request.body placeholder; the replacer performs an unbounded io.Copy of the entire body into memory before request-body size limits are applied, driving memory exhaustion and terminating the process. The bundling advisory (GHSA-j8px-rmrx-76h9) states all three issues were reproduced end-to-end against the unmodified official caddy:2.11.3 Docker image, so reproduction methodology is publicly documented, though a turnkey weaponized exploit is not confirmed in the input. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 23, 2026
Denial of service in Caddy Server 2.11.3 and earlier allows remote unauthenticated attackers to exhaust server memory by sending large request bodies when the site configuration resolves the http.request.body placeholder. The unbounded io.Copy in replacer.go reads the entire body before request-body size-limit middleware can apply, leading to process termination. This is not exploitable in default configurations; it requires an operator-defined Caddyfile that uses the placeholder. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the attack only affects availability (CVSS 3.1 A:L).
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Caddy Server 2.11.4 or later. The vendor released patch version 2.11.4, which includes the fix from PR #7761 and commit 176b043b0104cee3f894023cd5a598ac29e404bb. For immediate mitigation without upgrading, remove any use of the {http.request.body} placeholder from Caddyfile configurations, as the vulnerable code path is only reached when that placeholder is resolved. Alternatively, enforce request body size limits at an upstream proxy or load balancer, but note that this does not prevent the unbounded read within Caddy if the placeholder is still resolved; it only limits the total data an attacker can send. Restricting network access to trusted clients is a compensating control with the trade-off of reduced availability. See the vendor advisory at https://github.com/caddyserver/caddy/security/advisories/GHSA-j8px-rmrx-76h9 for details.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Caddy's placeholder/replacer system (modules/caddyhttp/replacer.go) resolves placeholders like {http.request.body} by reading the full request body via io.Copy without any size limit. This occurs before any request-body size-limit middleware in the handler chain runs, so configured max_size directives do not prevent the unbounded read. The code allocates memory proportional to the incoming body size, leading to memory exhaustion and process termination. This is classified as CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling). The affected product is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:caddyserver:caddy:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* (all versions up to 2.11.3). The vulnerability only manifests when an operator configuration includes a directive that resolves the http.request.body placeholder, which is not a default Caddy setup. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:L/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N) confirms network exploitable, unauthenticated, low availability impact.

Remote unauthenticated attacker (AV:N/PR:N/UI:N), but impact is availability-only and partial (A:L) because the resource exhaustion is gated on a non-default config using http.request.body; no C/I impact.

DescriptionCVE.org
Caddy is an extensible server platform that uses TLS by default. In version 2.11.3 and earlier, in modules/caddyhttp/replacer.go, resolving http.request.body reads the complete request body with an unbounded io.Copy before request-body middleware limits apply, allowing memory exhaustion and process termination.
