DescriptionCVE.org

Buffer over-read vulnerability in Apache Tomcat Native during the TLS handshake permits a malicious user to trigger a DoS via a JVM crash.

This issue affects Apache Tomcat Native: from 2.0.0 through 2.0.15, from 1.3.0 through 1.3.8. Earlier, unsupported versions may also be affected.

Users are recommended to upgrade to version 1.3.9 or 2.0.16, which fix the issue.

AnalysisAI

Denial of service via JVM crash affects Apache Tomcat Native versions 2.0.0 through 2.0.15 and 1.3.0 through 1.3.8, where a buffer over-read (CWE-126) during the TLS handshake lets a malicious client terminate the server process, rated CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H. The flaw is reachable remotely and unauthenticated with no user interaction, but only where the APR/OpenSSL-based native TLS connector is actually deployed and handling TLS connections; Tomcat instances using the pure-Java JSSE/NIO connector are not affected. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitable only when Apache Tomcat Native (the APR/OpenSSL-based TLS implementation) is deployed and handling TLS connections for Tomcat - deployments using the pure-Java JSSE/NIO connector are not affected. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment This is a denial-of-service-only flaw (JVM crash) with no confidentiality or integrity impact, disclosed by the Apache Software Foundation via its own security mailing list. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Upgrade Apache Tomcat Native to version 1.3.9 (1.3.x branch) or 2.0.16 (2.0.x branch), which the vendor states fix the issue; these are the only confirmed patched releases, so any 1.3.x or 2.0.x build below those levels - including the listed ranges 1.3.0-1.3.8 and 2.0.0-2.0.15 and earlier unsupported versions - should be treated as vulnerable. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, inventory every Tomcat instance to determine whether tomcat-native versions 2.0.0-2.0.15 or 1.3.0-1.3.8 are installed and whether the APR/OpenSSL-based native TLS connector is actually enabled and terminating TLS (check server.xml for connectors configured with Http11AprProtocol or the OpenSSL-backed TLS implementation); where the native TLS connector is not required, disable it and move affected instances to the pure-Java JSSE/NIO connector, and where it must remain, restrict inbound access to the TLS ports (typically 443/8443) to trusted networks and enable process supervision with automatic restart plus JVM crash alerting so outages are detected and shortened. …
