Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires network reachability to a pre-2.11.0 Netdata instance's WebSocket server (default web listener on 0.0.0.0:19999) where the client can negotiate the permessage-deflate extension - which the server offers BEFORE authentication, so no credentials are needed. No user interaction or special victim-side setup is required. Limiting factors: the Netdata WebSocket/web interface must be network-exposed to the attacker (instances bound to localhost or firewalled/reverse-proxied with connection limits are not reachable), and only versions prior to 2.11.0 lack the compression-ratio guard. Impact is confined to availability of the monitoring service (memory exhaustion / process termination); no data is read or modified.

Impact

This is a legitimate availability risk despite being 'only' a DoS. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, score 7.5) indicates a fully remote, unauthenticated, low-complexity attack with no user interaction and pure availability impact - consistent with CWE-409 (Improper Handling of Highly Compressed Data). The description and the PR diff corroborate this: permessage-deflate is negotiated BEFORE authentication, and the pre-fix decompressor lacked any compressed-to-decompressed ratio guard, so a ~100-byte frame can drive allocation toward the 200MB WS_MAX_DECOMPRESSED_SIZE ceiling; concurrent connections multiply this into memory exhaustion that terminates monitoring. No EPSS, KEV, or POC data was provided, so exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified from these signals - but the attack is trivial to script and the source-level root cause is public via the fix commit and advisory, which lowers the practical barrier. SSVC framing: exploitation=none observed (no KEV/POC in input), automatable=yes (repeatable network requests, no per-target work), technical impact=partial (availability of the monitoring service only, no code exec or data exposure). Net: a real, easily-triggered availability priority for internet-exposed Netdata, but not a confidentiality/integrity emergency. The 'Information Disclosure' tag conflicts with the CVSS vector (C:N) and the CWE - treat the tag as wrong, not the vector.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who can reach a pre-2.11.0 Netdata WebSocket endpoint opens a connection, and because permessage-deflate is negotiated before authentication, sends small highly-compressed frames (e.g., ~100 bytes of repeated bytes) that expand toward the 200MB decompression ceiling. Opening many concurrent connections and repeating this exhausts server memory and kills the monitoring process. No POC was identified in the provided data, but the technique is straightforward and the root cause is documented in the public fix.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 22, 2026

Memory exhaustion in Netdata versions prior to 2.11.0 allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to inflate small, highly compressed WebSocket frames into large server-side allocations and, by repeating this across concurrent connections, drive the monitoring process to memory exhaustion and termination. The weakness sits in the unauthenticated WebSocket server's permessage-deflate handling, which is negotiated before authentication, so exploitation requires only network reachability to the default web listener (0.0.0.0:19999) - instances bound to localhost or shielded by firewalls are not reachable. Vendor-released patch: 2.11.0, which introduces a compressed-to-decompressed ratio cap; no public exploit code identified at time of analysis and no CISA KEV entry, but the independent assessment rates this a legitimate availability risk given the trivial trigger and the CVSS 3.1 score of 7.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H).

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Netdata 2.11.0 or later, which is the vendor-released patched version that adds the compressed-to-decompressed ratio guard (compressed_len * WS_MAX_DECOMPRESSION_RATIO, floored at WS_MIN_DECOMPRESSED_SIZE and clamped to WS_MAX_DECOMPRESSED_SIZE) plus a probe byte for exact-limit messages; the release is available at https://github.com/netdata/netdata/releases/tag/v2.11.0, and the specific fix can be backported from commit e3811f7ee6e9fdfc4cbcb9929cab3f5d71d722d7 or PR https://github.com/netdata/netdata/pull/22828, with advisory details at https://github.com/netdata/netdata/security/advisories/GHSA-c8p4-cg3j-f4h2. Where upgrading immediately is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to remove reachability: bind the web listener to a loopback or management interface instead of 0.0.0.0:19999, or block TCP/19999 at the host firewall - the trade-off is that remote dashboards, streaming, and API consumers lose access. Placing the endpoint behind a reverse proxy that enforces per-IP connection limits, maximum WebSocket frame/message sizes, and short idle timeouts reduces (but does not eliminate) the fan-out an attacker needs to exhaust memory, at the cost of additional infrastructure and possible rejection of legitimate high-volume streaming connections; a proxy that refuses the permessage-deflate extension or strips 'Sec-WebSocket-Extensions: permessage-deflate' during negotiation also prevents the attack path entirely, trading increased bandwidth for unsupported compression. Applying cgroup/systemd memory limits to the netdata process bounds the blast radius by forcing an OOM kill of the agent rather than the host, but it does not prevent the availability loss, and resource-usage alerting on the WebSocket listener should be enabled to detect repeated connection bursts. No vendor-released alternative patch for pre-2.11.0 branches was identified in the provided data.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The issue is a decompression bomb (CWE-409: Improper Handling of Highly Compressed Data) in Netdata's WebSocket implementation, specifically src/web/websocket/websocket-compression.c. Netdata's WebSocket server offers the RFC 7692 permessage-deflate extension during the handshake, which occurs before any authentication step, and clients send payloads as raw DEFLATE streams (Uses zlib inflate without a terminating Z_STREAM_END marker; completion is detected by inflate leaving avail_out > 0, and the receiver re-appends the 0x00 0x00 0xFF 0xFF sync marker). In vulnerable builds, websocket_client_decompress_message() grew its output buffer using wsb_resize(), which is grow-only and never shrinks, and it only enforced an absolute ceiling (WS_MAX_DECOMPRESSED_SIZE, described in the fix as roughly a 200 MB limit) on the decompressed result. Because no ratio limit tied the decompressed size to the compressed input length, a tiny frame of repeated bytes (the patch author's note cites a ~100-byte payload) could force large allocations. The grow-only buffer interacts with permessage-deflate client context takeover: an earlier large message permanently enlarges u_payload for that connection, making subsequent checks against buffer size meaningless - which is why the corrected code caps avail_out offered to zlib per pass rather than the physical buffer size. The upstream fix computes a ratio cap (compressed_len multiplied by WS_MAX_DECOMPRESSION_RATIO, floored at WS_MIN_DECOMPRESSED_SIZE and clamped to WS_MAX_DECOMPRESSED_SIZE), adds a single probe byte so a message decompressing to exactly the limit is recognized as complete instead of overflowing, and rejects any message that exceeds the cap with a 'possible decompression bomb' error. The supplied CPE cpe:2.3:a:netdata:netdata:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* is version-agnostic and should be scoped to releases before 2.11.0. There is no confidentiality or integrity component here: no data is read or modified, only service availability on the affected listener.

DescriptionCVE.org

Netdata is an open source observability tool. Prior to 2.11.0, Netdata's unauthenticated WebSocket server negotiates permessage-deflate before authentication, and src/web/websocket/websocket-compression.c allows websocket_client_decompress_message() to grow decompressed output toward WS_MAX_DECOMPRESSED_SIZE without enforcing a compressed-to-decompressed ratio. Small highly compressed frames can therefore cause large server-side allocations, and repeated concurrent connections can exhaust memory and terminate monitoring. This vulnerability is fixed in 2.11.0.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Netdata versions prior to 2.11.0 expose organizations to a high-severity availability risk when the default web listener is reachable from untrusted networks. A remote, unauthenticated attacker can cause memory exhaustion and terminate the monitoring process, potentially blinding security and operations teams. Leadership should prioritize immediate network restrictions and upgrade to 2.11.0 to maintain critical monitoring visibility.
