1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires an interactive low-privileged local account on a Windows host running Netdata Agent 2.0.0 through 2.10.3, plus the ability to trigger a Windows Installer (MSI) repair of the Netdata package. The specific trigger is the MSI repair custom action invoking powershell.exe as SYSTEM WITHOUT the -NoProfile flag, causing it to load the initiating user's %USERPROFILE%\Documents\WindowsPowerShell\Microsoft.PowerShell_profile.ps1. Limiting factors: exploitation is local-only (no network vector), needs a pre-existing low-privilege foothold, and depends on the attacker being able to initiate (or induce) an MSI repair - if repair can only be launched by an administrator, the practical bar rises significantly. Fixed configurations (v2.10.4+) run PowerShell with -NoProfile and are not exploitable.

Impact

This is a genuine, well-scoped local privilege-escalation issue rather than a high-CVSS-but-low-real-risk item, though its real-world urgency is moderate. The vendor CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H = 7.8) is internally consistent with the description: a low-privileged local user who can initiate an MSI repair gains SYSTEM code execution via their own PowerShell profile, yielding full C/I/A impact on the host. The attack is local-only (AV:L) and requires an existing low-privilege foothold (PR:L), which meaningfully caps the blast radius - this is a post-compromise escalation primitive, not a remote entry point. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis'; there is no SSVC decision data supplied either. The signals are non-conflicting: local vector, authenticated-user prerequisite, and absence of KEV/POC together point to a real but not widespread, opportunistic-exploitation-class flaw. The main uncertainty is operational - whether a low-privileged user can independently trigger MSI repair in a given environment (Windows Installer allows this in some default configurations) versus needing an admin to initiate it, which would raise the practical bar.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A low-privileged user on a Windows host running Netdata Agent 2.0.0-2.10.3 writes malicious commands into their own %USERPROFILE%\Documents\WindowsPowerShell\Microsoft.PowerShell_profile.ps1, then triggers an MSI repair of the Netdata package. During repair, powershell.exe launches as SYSTEM without -NoProfile and loads that profile, executing the planted commands with SYSTEM privileges for full local takeover. No public exploit code was identified, but the technique is simple and reliable given local access.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 22, 2026

Local privilege escalation in the Netdata Windows Agent (versions 2.0.0 through 2.10.3) allows an authenticated low-privileged user to execute arbitrary commands with SYSTEM privileges by placing malicious commands in their PowerShell profile and then triggering an MSI repair, which runs powershell.exe as SYSTEM without the -NoProfile flag. The vulnerability (CWE-269) is fixed in Netdata Agent 2.10.4; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Netdata Agent 2.10.4 or later, which includes the vendor-released patch (commit d762782697623a98b51b4e41f7fe2d12404f0662, PR 22751). The fix adds the -NoProfile flag and uses the full path to powershell.exe. If immediate patching is not possible, restrict the ability to initiate an MSI repair to administrators only (e.g., via Group Policy or software restriction policies), since the exploitation requires a low-privileged user to trigger the repair. Note that simply removing the PowerShell profile is not a reliable mitigation because the attacker can recreate it. Monitor for suspicious PowerShell profile file creation and MSI repair events. Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw resides in the Windows Installer (MSI) custom actions of the Netdata Agent. During an MSI repair, a deferred custom action executes powershell.exe as SYSTEM (Impersonate='no') but omits the -NoProfile flag. Windows PowerShell consequently loads the profile script from %USERPROFILE%\Documents\WindowsPowerShell\Microsoft.PowerShell_profile.ps1. Because the repair can be initiated by a low-privileged local user, and the environment variables (including USERPROFILE) may be inherited from that user's session, the SYSTEM-level PowerShell process executes commands from the attacker-controlled profile, resulting in privilege escalation. This is classified as CWE-269 (Improper Privilege Management). The fix in 2.10.4 sets -NoProfile, uses the full path to powershell.exe, and switches to WixQuietExec for safer command execution. Affected products are identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:netdata:netdata:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, covering Netdata Agent for Windows 2.0.0 through 2.10.3.

DescriptionCVE.org

Netdata is an open source observability tool. From rom 2.0.0 until 2.10.4, during Netdata Windows Agent MSI repair, powershell.exe runs as SYSTEM without -NoProfile and loads %USERPROFILE%\Documents\WindowsPowerShell\Microsoft.PowerShell_profile.ps1 from the low-privileged user who initiated repair. Commands placed in that profile before repair therefore execute with SYSTEM privileges. This vulnerability is fixed in 2.10.4.

Technical POC Analysis

CWE-269 (Improper Privilege Management); the advisory also tags CWE-427 (Uncontrolled Search Path Element), which is arguably the more precise label.

Full technical POC analysis - root cause, step-by-step exploitation and patch breakdown - is part of the Pro and Business plans.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A privilege-escalation flaw in the Netdata Windows Agent (versions 2.0.0 through 2.10.3) allows a low-privileged local user to gain SYSTEM-level command execution on affected endpoints, meaning an attacker who already has a foothold on a monitored server or workstation could silently take full control of that host. Because Netdata agents are typically deployed across broad server and workstation estates for monitoring, the affected footprint may extend well beyond a single team or business unit. Leadership should treat this as a fleet-wide endpoint exposure requiring coordinated remediation rather than an isolated IT fix.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Apply vendor patch (Netdata Agent 2.10.4 or later). Until every affected host is upgraded, restrict interactive and remote interactive logon on Netdata-managed Windows systems to trusted administrators, limit write access to user PowerShell profile paths, restrict who can invoke MSI repair operations on the Netdata Agent, apply application allowlisting so powershell.exe cannot be launched by SYSTEM-context MSI repair workflows outside approved paths, and enable process-creation auditing (event 4688) to detect MSI repair activity spawning powershell.exe as SYSTEM. Note that the patch availability field in this record conflicts with the vendor fix version cited in the technical description; validate the current patch status with the vendor advisory before finalizing remediation timelines.
