Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the relying party to invoke the intra-handshake aTLS AMD SEV-SNP verification path WITHOUT an expected reportData value (nil, empty, or omitted), causing the SEV-SNP policy ReportData to remain unset so no connection-binding/freshness check is enforced. The attacker must also possess a valid but unrelated or stale SEV-SNP Evidence to present. It is LIMITED by: callers that supply a non-empty reportData are unaffected (that path is still validated); only Cocos AI versions ≤0.8.2 on the SEV-SNP aTLS trust-decision path; and the need to acquire a usable foreign/stale attestation blob. Only applies where aTLS results feed a trust or authorization decision.

Impact

The vendor CVSS of 9.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N) reflects a serious break in the core trust guarantee of a confidential-computing system: an attestation-freshness/origin-validation failure (CWE-346) that lets a verifier accept SEV-SNP Evidence not bound to the current connection. However, the raw score somewhat overstates real-world exposure because exploitation is GATED on the relying party using the aTLS path WITHOUT an expected reportData (nil/empty/omitted) - a non-empty reportData is still validated correctly, so hardened callers are unaffected. This is a genuine trust-boundary bypass, not a low-real-risk high-CVSS artifact, but it is conditional on deployment/API usage rather than a universal remote pop. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no proof-of-concept in the provided data (advisory, PR #582, commit 80bf813c, and the v0.9.0 release tag only). Exploitation status: no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The AV:N/PR:N/AC:L metrics are plausible for the network path, but I assess AC:H is more honest because the attacker must obtain a valid-but-unrelated/stale SEV-SNP Evidence blob AND the victim relying party must be on the no-reportData code path - verify the default configuration with the vendor.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who can obtain any valid but unrelated or stale AMD SEV-SNP attestation Evidence connects to a relying party that performs an aTLS trust/authorization decision without supplying an expected reportData. Because the SEV-SNP policy ReportData is left unset, the verifier does not bind the attestation to the current connection and accepts the replayed/foreign Evidence, inducing the relying party to trust an unintended attestation context (e.g., a non-genuine or attacker-influenced TEE). No public proof-of-concept is included in the referenced advisory or PR.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 18, 2026

An attestation-freshness and origin-validation failure in the aTLS AMD SEV-SNP verification path of Cocos AI (Ultraviolet) affects versions up to and including 0.8.2: when a relying party invokes the intra-handshake verification path with no expected reportData value (nil, empty, or omitted), the SEV-SNP policy ReportData is left unset and the verifier will accept unrelated or stale Evidence that is not bound to the current TLS connection. An attacker who possesses a valid but foreign or replayed SEV-SNP attestation blob can therefore induce a trusting party to accept an unintended attestation context, undermining the core trust guarantee of the confidential-computing platform and potentially enabling both integrity and confidentiality compromise in any workflow where aTLS output drives a trust or authorization decision. Exploitation is unauthenticated at the network layer (CVSS PR:N) but constrained by high attack complexity and specific prerequisites - the caller must omit the expected reportData, and only SEV-SNP aTLS deployments up to 0.8.2 are exposed; no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis. The issue is fixed in version 0.9.0.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Cocos AI v0.9.0 (https://github.com/ultravioletrs/cocos/releases/tag/v0.9.0), which is the fixed release per vendor advisory GHSA-4r6g-mp48-j2rw and includes the changes from pull request #582 / commit 80bf813c48300f02259b338b91f844c71be582ea. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, the effective compensating control is to guarantee that every aTLS AMD SEV-SNP verification performed for a trust or authorization decision is invoked with a non-empty, connection-bound expected reportData (for example a fresh 64-byte value derived from the live handshake, such as the nonce carried in the SNI or an equivalent per-connection binding); a non-empty value is still validated on affected versions, so this restores the freshness/origin check without code changes on the caller side - its trade-off is that it requires every relying-party call site to be audited and updated to supply such a value, and any third-party or legacy caller that cannot be changed remains exposed. Until that audit is complete, treat a successful aTLS handshake as insufficient evidence of a trusted enclave whenever reportData was omitted and do not use that result as an authorization signal; additionally, restrict network reachability of aTLS endpoints that operate in this mode to trusted peers, since a usable stale or foreign SEV-SNP Evidence blob is a prerequisite for abuse. No vendor-released patch beyond v0.9.0 is identified in the provided data, and no public exploit code has been observed at time of analysis.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Cocos AI is a confidential-computing system that runs AI workloads inside trusted execution environments, and it uses attested TLS (aTLS) as its handshake-time mechanism for proving to a peer that the server is running in a genuine, correctly-configured AMD SEV-SNP enclave. aTLS binds the remote attestation to the specific TLS connection by requiring the enclave to place a caller-supplied, connection-derived value (the 64-byte reportData field of an SEV-SNP attestation report) into the signed Evidence; the verifier then compares that field against its own expected value. The vulnerability is an origin-validation error (CWE-346) rooted in the handling of that expectation: in the affected versions, when the expected reportData passed into the AMD SEV-SNP verification path is nil, zero-length, or simply omitted, the SEV-SNP policy's ReportData field is never populated, so the policy imposes no constraint and any syntactically valid Evidence from any enclave - including stale or attacker-collected reports - satisfies the check. Because the binding between Evidence and the live connection is precisely what reportData provides, its absence silently degrades attestation into a bare signature/format check, and any consumer that treats a successful aTLS handshake as proof of a specific trusted enclave identity is then trusting an unverified context. The upstream fix (GitHub PR ultravioletrs/cocos#582, commit 80bf813c48300f02259b338b91f844c71be582ea, released in v0.9.0) reworks the pkg/atls code so that freshness/origin binding is enforced. Supply of a non-empty expected reportData is not affected - that path remains validated - so the defect is specific to callers that rely on the verification path without a connection-bound expectation.

DescriptionCVE.org

Cocos AI is a confidential computing system for running AI workloads inside trusted execution environments. In versions up to and including 0.8.2, the intra-handshake attested TLS (aTLS) AMD SEV-SNP verification path does not enforce attestation freshness when the expected reportData value is nil, empty, or omitted, leaving the SEV-SNP policy ReportData unset so the verifier accepts unrelated or stale Evidence not bound to the current connection. A relying party that uses this path without an expected reportData as a trust or authorization decision can be induced to trust an unintended attestation context; a supplied non-empty reportData is still validated. The issue is fixed in version 0.9.0.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Cocos AI (Ultraviolet) releases up to and including 0.8.2 contain a critical flaw in the AMD SEV-SNP attestation verification path that allows an attacker holding a valid but foreign or replayed attestation blob to have it accepted as genuine, breaking the hardware-backed trust guarantee that confidential-computing workflows depend on. Any team relying on aTLS output to gate access, authorize workloads, or protect sensitive data processed in trusted execution environments may be affected, and the risk extends to both data confidentiality and integrity. Because no vendor patch is currently available and the flaw is reachable unauthenticated over the network, leadership should treat this as a priority remediation item requiring compensating controls rather than routine patch management.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: enforce a mandatory, non-empty expected reportData value bound to the current TLS connection and fail closed on nil/empty/omitted values; reject attestations that fail freshness/nonce validation to defeat replay of stale Evidence; restrict network access to the affected aTLS relying parties so only trusted peers can reach the verification path; add logging and alerting for attestation mismatches; re-review prior trust and authorization decisions made through aTLS; and monitor vendor channels for a fixed release above 0.8.2.
