Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to be a previously-authorized Docs user (PR:L) who has already established live websocket collaboration sessions to sub-documents of a parent document, and whose access is then revoked at the parent level. The flaw is specific to hierarchical/nested documents: the pre-5.4.1 server reset collaboration connections only for the target document, not its descendants, so descendant sessions persist. Limiting factors: the attacker must hold an open, uninterrupted websocket session at the time of revocation (AC:H/AT:P timing/state dependency), must have had prior legitimate access, and the target must be running Docs before 5.4.1 with the real-time collaboration server in use; a simple re-authentication or fresh page load would not grant access, so this is an offboarding/session-persistence abuse rather than a fresh unauthenticated intrusion.

Impact

This is a genuine authorization/session-expiration flaw (CWE-613) in the suitenumerique Docs collaborative editor, and the CVSS 4.0 vector (7.6, AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N) matches the described impact well: a network-reachable, previously-authenticated user (PR:L) retains both read and write (VC:H/VI:H) to sub-documents after access is revoked. The AC:H and AT:P metrics correctly capture that exploitation is not trivially repeatable on demand - the attacker must already hold an open websocket collaboration session at the moment access is revoked, and the flaw only manifests for descendant documents of the revoked parent. Exploitation signals are mixed but lean toward real priority: a public POC exists (geo-chen/oss write-up) and VulnCheck published an advisory, but there is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS provided, so this is 'publicly available exploit code exists' rather than confirmed active exploitation - treat as a credible, documented weakness rather than a mass-exploited threat. The main tempering factor is prerequisite state (an already-established, still-open session and a prior grant that is being revoked), which makes this an insider/offboarding-abuse risk rather than an internet-wide unauthenticated compromise. No data is strongly conflicting; the vector and description are consistent.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A user is granted access to a parent document (and thereby its sub-documents) in Docs, opens a real-time collaboration websocket session, and an administrator later revokes their access at the parent. Because the server only reset connections on the parent and never cascaded to descendants, the attacker's existing websocket sessions to child documents are never torn down, so they keep reading and editing sub-documents in real time. A public proof-of-concept demonstrating this stale-session persistence is available from VulnCheck's referenced write-up.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 16, 2026

Revoked users of suitenumerique Docs prior to 5.4.1 can retain real-time read and write access to nested sub-documents, because the server resets collaboration websocket rooms only for the document whose permissions changed and not for its descendants. An attacker who is a previously authorized user (authenticated, PR:L per the CVSS vector) and who already holds an open websocket session to a sub-document keeps that session alive after their access is revoked at the parent level, allowing continued viewing and editing of content they should no longer reach; the impact is bounded by the requirement that a live session already exist at the moment of revocation (AC:H, AT:P), and no KEV-listed active exploitation has been reported, though publicly available exploit code exists. This is an offboarding and session-expiration failure (CWE-613) rather than an unauthenticated intrusion vector, and the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N) aligns with the high confidentiality and integrity impact described.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to suitenumerique Docs 5.4.1 or later, which is the vendor-released patched version: the fix commit d35b81a6ed526dc284c8d0f68b762f2e81ffab13 (https://github.com/suitenumerique/docs/commit/d35b81a6ed526dc284c8d0f68b762f2e81ffab13) adds a reset_service_connections_in_cascade Celery task that walks every descendant document by path prefix and depth and resets each collaboration room, replacing the previous single-room reset in link_configuration, perform_update and perform_destroy. Where upgrading is not immediately possible, the effective compensating control is to force-terminate collaboration sessions on the collaboration server (for example by restarting the websocket/collaboration service, or by flushing the per-document rooms) whenever access is revoked on a parent document - the trade-off is that this disconnects all legitimate concurrent editors of the affected subtree and they must reload the document, so schedule it with the revocation event rather than as a blanket periodic restart. Administrators should also audit for stale connections during offboarding of departing staff or external collaborators, since a simple front-end logout or page reload does not close an already-established websocket, and should treat revocation on a parent document as an action requiring a follow-up session reset on every descendant until the patched version is deployed. Given that public exploit code exists, prioritise the 5.4.1 upgrade in any environment where external or time-limited collaborators have edit rights on nested documents.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Docs is the collaborative document editor published by the French public-service incubator suitenumerique, built on a Django backend (the affected code lives in src/backend/core/api/viewsets.py and src/backend/core/services/collaboration_services.py) with real-time co-editing delivered through a collaboration server that manages websocket rooms, one room per document. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:suitenumerique:docs:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, with all releases up to and including 5.3.0 affected (EUVD records the range as docs 0 <5.4.1). Documents are stored hierarchically as a tree, addressed by materialized path and depth fields, so a parent document normally governs access to everything beneath it. The root cause is CWE-613 (Insufficient Session Expiration): the pre-fix CollaborationService.reset_connections(room, user_id) method was invoked with only the single document identifier, so when an administrator revoked or altered a user's access on a parent document the server closed that user's connection for the parent room only. Child rooms were never signalled, leaving the Yjs-style websocket sessions for every descendant document open and fully functional for both reading and writing. The vendor fix introduces a Celery task, reset_service_connections_in_cascade, which loads the target document, selects all documents with path starting with the parent's path and depth greater than or equal to the parent's depth, and calls the internal _reset_connection per document, so revocation now cascades to the entire subtree; the change also swaps the previous synchronous reset calls in link_configuration, perform_update and perform_destroy for the asynchronous cascade task.

DescriptionCVE.org

Docs before 5.4.1 fails to properly revoke websocket collaboration connections when access is revoked at parent documents. Attackers with revoked access can retain real-time read and write access to sub-documents through open websocket sessions that are never disconnected.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

SuiteNumérique Docs prior to 5.4.1 permits revoked authenticated users to retain real-time read and write access to nested sub-documents when they already hold an open collaboration websocket session, creating a serious offboarding and session-expiration gap. Organizations using Docs for access-controlled collaboration could face unauthorized viewing or editing of sensitive content by recently deprovisioned or permission-reduced users, and publicly available exploit code exists. Leadership should prioritize remediation because this undermines trust in access revocation for hierarchical document repositories and may expose regulated or confidential information.
