Vulnerability Assessment
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a mounted CephFS filesystem using the in-kernel ceph client (6.10+, where mdsc->s_cap_auths and ceph_mds_check_access() exist) with MDS cap-based access checking active. A local process must be performing path/open operations (ceph_atomic_open path) at the exact moment an MDS session is being reopened, which replaces and frees the s_cap_auths array under mdsc->mutex. Limiting factors: exploitation is local-only (not remotely reachable despite the CVSS AV:N), needs a narrow timing window between the unlocked traversal and the session-reopen free (a race, so success is probabilistic), and requires local access to a host where CephFS is mounted - a deployment mode confined to Ceph storage environments. |
| Impact | The vendor-assigned CVSS of 9.8 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) is severely inflated and internally inconsistent with the vulnerability's own description. The upstream commit message shows this is a local, race-condition-driven use-after-free in the CephFS kernel client, NOT a network-reachable remote code execution: ceph_mds_check_access() traverses mdsc->s_cap_auths without holding mdsc->mutex while a concurrent MDS session reopen frees that array. The reproduced crash originates from a local file-open (ceph_atomic_open → path_openat → do_sys_openat2) by a local process (php-cgi in the trace), so the real attack vector is Local (AV:L), the trigger is a tight race window (AC:H), and it requires an unprivileged local user with access to a mounted CephFS (PR:L). The technical impact is a kernel oops/panic (denial of service), not the confidentiality/integrity compromise implied by C:H/I:H. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit in the provided intelligence, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' Net: this is a moderate-severity local DoS (my independent estimate ~5.3), not the near-maximum-priority remote flaw the 9.8 suggests. The AV:N in the vector directly contradicts the description's call chain - verify with vendor/kernel maintainers; the actual reachability is local-only. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | On a host with a mounted CephFS, a local unprivileged user repeatedly opens files (driving ceph_mds_check_access) while the MDS session is forced to reopen (e.g., network flap or MDS restart causing session OPEN handling to replace s_cap_auths). If the reopen frees the cap-auth array during a concurrent traversal, the kernel dereferences freed memory and oopses/panics, crashing the node. No public proof-of-concept is identified in the available data. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 16, 2026
A use-after-free race in the Linux kernel CephFS client allows a local process to crash the kernel while opening a file on an in-kernel CephFS mount, with a secondary integrity impact on the access-check result. The bug lives in ceph_mds_check_access(), which walks the mdsc->s_cap_auths array without holding mdsc->mutex, so a concurrent MDS session OPEN (reopen) that replaces and frees that array under the mutex can free the strings mid-traversal - the oops trace shows ceph_mds_check_access reached via ceph_atomic_open and do_sys_openat2. Affected systems are Linux 6.10 and later (where the s_cap_auths access-checking code exists) that mount CephFS with the in-kernel client; exploitation is local-only, requires a narrow timing window (AV:L/AC:H/PR:L per our assessment), and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis. The vendor-assigned CVSS of 9.8 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N) is severely inflated relative to the described local race.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patches exist: upgrade the kernel to Linux 6.12.110, 6.18.51, 7.2.5, or 7.3-rc2 or later, which contain the upstream fixes at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/a61c6ae1dae2611082b831b4aaa780878099c012, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/729c1ff670ece6f3d4b1738365a0b2f90d487523, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/df1a97d5313fccadb08390306d49b194fb027392 and https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/ca5bfea2045ef2eb3305cf2a9d8da549b76c37d3. Because the flaw is a local timing race in a kernel code path, there is no runtime configuration toggle that disables it without removing the feature: the most effective workaround is to avoid mounting CephFS with the in-kernel client in environments where untrusted local users (or local code such as web runtimes, note the php-cgi8.4 comm in the crash) share the host - instead use a confined/namespace-limited environment or a user-space CephFS mount, accepting the performance and feature trade-offs of the alternate client. Additional compensating controls with reasonable trade-offs are to restrict local login and process execution on CephFS client hosts (reduces the PR:L foothold at the cost of operational flexibility) and to reduce or schedule MDS session reopens so the swap of s_cap_auths does not overlap heavy file-open activity, although this is only probabilistic mitigation of a race and not a fix. Deployment sharding also matters: hosts that never mount CephFS, or that use a kernel older than 6.10 or one already patched, are not exposed, so inventory CephFS clients and prioritize patching exactly those systems. Monitor kernel logs for 'ceph_mds_check_access' oops signatures as an indicator that the race is being hit.

Technical ContextAI · show details
CephFS clients authenticate principals through capabilities issued by the Ceph Metadata Server (MDS), and the in-kernel Ceph client caches per-session authorization state in mdsc->s_cap_auths. This array (and the strings it points to) is owned by the MDS session and is reallocated whenever session OPEN handling installs a new capability set; that replacement happens under mdsc->mutex. The vulnerable function ceph_mds_check_access() reads the same array to decide whether the calling process is permitted to open a given path, but performs that traversal with no lock held. The result is a classic check-then-use race (CWE-416 use-after-free combined with CWE-362 race condition): if the array is swapped and freed between the unlocked read and its use, the kernel dereferences freed memory, producing page-fault oopses such as the 'Unable to handle kernel paging request' trace reproduced in the report. The affected code was introduced by upstream commit 596afb0b8933ba6ed7227adcc538db26feb25c74 (landing in Linux 6.10), which is why the EUVD affected-version data calls out Linux 6.10 as the entry point and lists the fix commits a61c6ae1dae2611082b831b4aaa780878099c012, 729c1ff670ece6f3d4b1738365a0b2f90d487523, df1a97d5313fccadb08390306d49b194fb027392 and ca5bfea2045ef2eb3305cf2a9d8da549b76c37d3. The successful outcome for an attacker is kernel availability loss (panic/oops on the host) rather than remote code execution, consistent with our assessed impact of C:N/I:L/A:H. The CPE linux:linux strings confirm this is a mainline Linux kernel issue rather than a user-space Ceph package defect, and the 'Information Disclosure' tag should be treated as a low-confidence engine tag not supported by the assessed confidentiality impact.

Crash originates from a local open() racing MDS session reopen, so AV:L/AC:H/PR:L; impact is a kernel-panic DoS (A:H) with only marginal freed-memory read (I:L), no confirmed leak (C:N).
vuln.today treats the vendor’s rating as authoritative. A higher third-party CVSS (e.g. CISA-ADP) is shown for transparency but does not drive the headline severity.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
ceph: lock mutex in ceph_mds_check_access()
MDS session OPEN handling replaces mdsc->s_cap_auths under mdsc->mutex, freeing the previous array and its strings.
ceph_mds_check_access() traverses this array without holding the mutex. A concurrent session reopen can therefore free the array while it is being inspected, resulting in a use-after-free like this:
Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 003aaad64b2c8bb9 [...] Internal error: Oops: 0000000096000004 [#1] SMP Modules linked in: CPU: 56 UID: 2953037534 PID: 1253231 Comm: php-cgi8.4 Not tainted 6.18.45-i2-ampere #1146 NONE [..] pc : ceph_mds_check_access+0xd4/0x550 lr : ceph_mds_check_access+0xc8/0x550 [...] Call trace: ceph_mds_check_access+0xd4/0x550 (P) ceph_atomic_open+0x138/0xbe8 path_openat+0xa24/0xfa8 do_filp_open+0x94/0x158 do_sys_openat2+0x88/0xf8
Executive ViewAI
The Linux kernel CephFS client is affected by a use-after-free race condition that can allow a local user to crash the kernel, disrupting CephFS-mounted workloads. Organizations running Linux 6.10 or later with in-kernel CephFS mounts are at risk of availability loss and potential access-control integrity issues, though exploitation is local-only, requires low privileges (authenticated), and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis. A vendor patch is available, and leadership should prioritize remediation to protect critical storage services.
