Exploitation Conditions

Requires a deployment using the FAB auth manager with Authentik OAuth configured, AND the same Authentik instance must also serve at least one other application. The attacker must already hold a valid id_token that Authentik minted for one of those other client applications (not for Airflow). Limiting factors: the audience-only bypass depends on Authentik signing all applications with one shared key set; deployments where Authentik serves Airflow exclusively, or that do not use the FAB Authentik path, are not exposed. Applying the earlier CVE-2026-75156 (Azure AD) fix does NOT protect the Authentik path - upgrade to apache-airflow-providers-fab 3.9.0 is required.

Impact

This is a genuine authentication-bypass flaw but a strongly gated one, not a broad remote-takeover. The vendor CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N, 8.1 High) captures the impact - a network attacker with low privileges can impersonate another user, yielding high confidentiality and integrity loss with no availability impact. However, AC:L understates the real preconditions: exploitation requires that the same Authentik identity provider also serve OTHER applications AND that the attacker already hold a valid id_token one of those apps minted - I assess AC:H is more honest. All exploitation signals point to low near-term urgency: EPSS is 0.14% (4th percentile), the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, and no public exploit code is identified. Patch is confirmed available (apache-airflow-providers-fab 3.9.0, PR #72645 with regression tests). The 'no public exploit identified' status combined with very low EPSS suggests this is a patch-on-schedule item rather than an emergency, despite the High CVSS. Note the Azure AD variant of the same bug (CVE-2026-75156) was fixed earlier in the same file; deployments that patched that one but use Authentik remain exposed until 3.9.0.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An organization runs Airflow with the FAB auth manager and Authentik OAuth, where the same Authentik instance also fronts an unrelated internal app. An attacker who is a legitimate user of that other app obtains the id_token Authentik issued for it, then presents that token to Airflow's Authentik login endpoint; because the audience (and issuer) claim is never checked, Airflow accepts it and logs the attacker in as the user the token names. No public exploit code exists at time of analysis, and the attacker must already possess a valid token for a sibling application.

AnalysisAIv3 – Sep 17, 2026

Authentication bypass in the Apache Airflow FAB provider (apache-airflow-providers-fab before 3.9.0) allows an attacker who holds an OIDC id_token that the same Authentik identity provider minted for a different client application to log into Airflow as the named user, because the Authentik OAuth path in the FAB auth manager never validates the token's issuer or audience claims. Only deployments using the FAB auth manager with Authentik OAuth are affected, and only where that same Authentik instance also serves at least one other application, so the attacker must already possess a valid token from that other application (the assessed vector is AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N, reflecting these gated prerequisites). Risk is high on confidentiality and integrity for exposed deployments, but the exploit path is narrow; no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis and EPSS is low at 0.14% (4th percentile), so this is a strongly gated authentication-bypass issue rather than a broad remote-takeover vector.

v2 Sep 17, 2026 - 20:43 cvss changed CVSS 8.1

Authentication bypass in the Apache Airflow FAB provider (apache-airflow-providers-fab before 3.9.0) lets anyone holding an id_token that the same Authentik instance minted for a different client application authenticate to Airflow as the user that token names, because the Authentik OAuth code path never validates the token's issuer or audience claims. This does not apply to single-application Authentik deployments, and it affects only the Authentik path - deployments that applied the CVE-2026-75156 Azure AD fix remain vulnerable here until they upgrade. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the CVE is not in CISA KEV (EPSS ~0.14%, 4th percentile), but exploitation requires only a legitimate cross-application token, so the vendor-released 3.9.0 patch should be applied promptly.

v1 Sep 15, 2026 - 22:15

The Apache Airflow FAB provider (apache-airflow-providers-fab) before 3.9.0 fails to validate the issuer and audience claims of id_tokens presented to its Authentik OAuth login path, so any token that the same Authentik deployment minted for a different client application is accepted by Airflow and authenticates the attacker as the user named in that token. Only deployments running the FAB auth manager with Authentik OAuth against an Authentik instance that also serves other applications are affected — the attacker needs a valid token for one of those other apps, not for Airflow itself. This is a follow-up to CVE-2026-75156, which fixed the identical missing-validation flaw on the Azure AD path in the same file while leaving the Authentik path untouched; upgrade to 3.9.0 or later to remediate. No public exploit code or active-exploitation telemetry was provided in the source data.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade apache-airflow-providers-fab to version 3.9.0 or later, which adds mandatory issuer and audience validation to the Authentik id_token path. This upgrade is required even for organizations that already applied the CVE-2026-75156 Azure AD fix - that patch did not modify the Authentik branch, so Azure AD remediation gives no protection here. After upgrading, ensure the Authentik provider is configured with server_metadata_url so the issuer is discovered from OpenID metadata; if that metadata publishes no issuer, the patched code fails closed and login breaks, so set issuer explicitly in the provider's client_kwargs (for example https://authentik.example.com/application/o/airflow/) - the trade-off is that a missing or wrong issuer value will block all Authentik logins until corrected. If upgrading is not immediately possible, compensating controls are limited because the bypass relies on Authentik's shared key set: isolate Airflow onto a dedicated Authentik instance or application-specific signing key set so no other application's tokens share the same keys (operationally heavy, but it removes the prerequisite entirely), reduce the reachable attack surface by restricting network access to the Airflow webserver and its OAuth callback endpoints to trusted users, and monitor authentication logs for successful logins whose token subject does not correspond to an expected Airflow user, since a cross-application token still authenticates as its named subject. Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is an origin-validation error (CWE-346) in the FAB auth manager's Authentik OpenID Connect login path, implemented in providers/fab/src/airflow/providers/fab/auth_manager/security_manager/override.py. Airflow decodes the incoming id_token with Authlib's jwt.decode against the provider's JWKS, but the Authentik branch passed no claims_options, so neither the iss (issuer) nor aud (audience) claim was ever compared to the configured provider. Because Authentik signs tokens for every application registered with the instance using one shared key set, a valid signature only proves the token came from that instance - not that it was addressed to Airflow or issued for the Airflow application. The upstream fix (PR apache/airflow#72645) threads claims_options through _validate_jwt and enforces iss (essential, pinned to the configured or metadata-discovered issuer) and aud (essential, pinned to the Authentik client_id), failing closed with a FabException when no issuer can be determined rather than downgrading to an audience-only check. This is the same defect class previously corrected for the Azure AD path in CVE-2026-75156; that fix did not touch the Authentik path, which is corrected only here. Note that the parsed claim values (iss, aud, sub) can expose identity information about the token subject, which aligns with the information-disclosure tagging seen in the intelligence sources.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Apache Airflow deployments that authenticate users through the FAB provider against Authentik are exposed to an authentication bypass that could let an attacker with a token from any other application on the same Authentik instance assume another user's identity in Airflow. Exposure is limited to organizations running that specific combination, but where it applies the affected Airflow instance orchestrates data and code pipelines, so unauthorized access could translate into tampering with production workloads and exposure of sensitive data. Leadership should treat this as a contained but material risk to platform integrity rather than a broad internet-facing emergency.
