Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 15, 2026
Vikunja prior to 2.6.0 leaks the secret hash that backs a project's link shares through its single-share read endpoint, so any authenticated user holding only read-only membership in a project can read the credential that is supposed to be reserved for the link itself. Because that hash can be exchanged for a link-share JWT carrying the share's own permission level, the disclosure becomes a privilege-escalation primitive: if the leaked share was created with write or admin rights, the attacker inherits them and can modify tasks, projects, or administrative settings. The issue is fixed in 2.6.0 per the vendor advisory, and no CISA KEV listing, EPSS score, or public exploit code was present in the supplied intelligence at time of analysis.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Vikunja before 2.6.0 fails to properly restrict access to the link-share hash field in single-share read endpoints, allowing read-only members to obtain the share's secret credential. Attackers can exchange the disclosed hash for a link-share JWT at the share's permission level to escalate privileges and perform unauthorized writes or administrative actions.
Technical POC Analysis
CWE-200 (exposure of sensitive information to an unauthorized actor), with the advisory also citing CWE-639 and CWE-862 for the escalation path.

Executive ViewAI
Vikunja deployments running versions prior to 2.6.0 expose a credential that undermines the permission model protecting project link shares, allowing a low-privileged project member to obtain the higher access level originally granted to a shared link. Organizations using Vikunja for task, project, or administrative workflows could see unauthorized modification of project data or settings wherever write- or admin-level shares exist. Leadership should prioritize this because the flaw converts an ordinary read-only membership into a pathway to elevated control, and remediation is already available from the vendor.
Within 24 hours, inventory all Vikunja instances and identify those running any version below 2.6.0, then treat them as exposed until upgraded; simultaneously enumerate existing project link shares and revoke or regenerate any created with write or admin permissions, since those credentials may already be recoverable by read-only members. Within 7 days, upgrade every identified instance to Vikunja 2.6.0 or later per the vendor advisory, verify the deployment version after upgrade, and review access and audit logs for anomalous link-share usage, unexpected task or project modifications, and privilege changes made by low-privilege accounts. Within 30 days, re-establish link shares under least-privilege defaults, add monitoring or alerting for future share-secret access and for creation of elevated-permission shares, and fold patch-currency checks for self-hosted collaboration platforms into routine vulnerability management so future advisories are applied within defined service levels.
Apply vendor patch.
