Exploitation Conditions

The container package (container.npk) must be installed and active on the RouterOS device - devices without this optional package have no /container/add endpoint and cannot be reached via this vulnerability. The attacker requires router administrator-level credentials (CVSS PR:H) to invoke the container import function; standard read-only or limited accounts cannot reach this path. A human administrator must actively trigger the container import action (CVSS UI:P / SSVC automatable: no), making mass automated exploitation infeasible. The attack fires at import time before the container starts, so even organizations that import but never run containers are exposed. Devices running the 7.23.x LTS branch remain permanently exposed until migrated to 7.24.x, as no LTS fix exists.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 score of 6.9 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:H/UI:P) is a reasonable representation of realistic risk and notably lower than a naive reading of 'root-level file write' would suggest. Three factors constrain exploitability: PR:H (router administrator credentials required), UI:P (an admin must actively import the image), and AT:P (the container package must be installed). SSVC concurs - exploitation status is none, automatable is no (cannot be mass-triggered without human admin interaction), and technical impact is partial. There is no CISA KEV listing and no public proof-of-concept code at time of analysis. The most credible threat vectors are supply-chain attack (malicious image hosted in a registry the admin trusts) or insider threat. The most significant risk amplifier is the unpatched LTS branch: organizations pinned to 7.23.x have no vendor-provided fix and must either migrate to 7.24.2 or remove the container package entirely. EPSS data was not included in the provided intelligence and cannot be assessed.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker targeting an organization that runs RouterOS with the container package enabled crafts an OCI container image containing tar archive members with symlinks resolving to host paths such as RouterOS user configuration or persistent script directories. The attacker delivers the image to an administrator - via a poisoned registry, spear-phishing link, or supply-chain compromise - and induces them to import it via the RouterOS container interface. Upon container/add execution, the extractor follows the symlinks and writes attacker-controlled files to the host partition under root context without starting the container, achieving persistence or credential manipulation. No public proof-of-concept code exists at time of analysis, though the tar-slip technique is broadly published in container security literature.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 15, 2026

Path traversal in MikroTik RouterOS's container package OCI/tar image extraction enables an authenticated administrator to be induced into importing a crafted container image that writes arbitrary files outside the container root onto the device's persistent data partition with root privileges. The vulnerability fires entirely at import time via the /container/add endpoint - the container never needs to start - enabling file creation, deletion via overlayfs whiteout, directory creation, and hardlink creation on the host filesystem. No public exploit has been identified and SSVC rates exploitation as none, but the 7.23.x long-term branch remains unpatched indefinitely, with container-7.23.3.npk and container-7.23.4.npk confirmed byte-identical.

RemediationAI

Upgrade RouterOS to version 7.24.2 or later using the MikroTik update mechanism; the vendor patch and release notes are documented at https://mikrotik.com/supportsec/september-2026-vulnerability. For LTS-track deployments on 7.23.x, no fixed long-term release exists at time of publication; migration to the 7.24.2 stable branch is the only vendor-supported remediation path. Where immediate upgrade is not feasible, remove or disable the container package entirely - uninstall container.npk via the RouterOS package manager and reboot; this disables all container workloads but eliminates the vulnerable extraction path. As a compensating administrative control, restrict access to all RouterOS management interfaces (Winbox, web console, SSH, API port 8728/8729) to explicitly trusted administrative subnets using input-chain firewall rules, reducing the attack surface available for social-engineering a privileged admin into importing a malicious image. Only trust container images from cryptographically verified, internally controlled registries.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The affected component is the container package bundled with MikroTik RouterOS (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:mikrotik:routeros:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*), specifically the OCI/tar image extraction pipeline invoked by the /container/add import workflow. CWE-59 (Improper Link Resolution Before File Access - 'Link Following') is the root cause class: the tar extractor follows symlinks embedded in the container image archive without verifying that resolved paths remain confined to the container root directory. An attacker crafts an OCI image whose archive members contain symlinks targeting arbitrary host filesystem paths; during extraction, the routine resolves these links under root context and writes content to the host-side targets. Overlayfs whiteout entries in the archive additionally enable file deletion on the host partition. This is structurally identical to the well-documented 'tar-slip' class of container runtime vulnerabilities. The container feature is an optional add-on package (container.npk) introduced in RouterOS 7.x; the 7.23.x LTS branch receives no fix because container-7.23.3.npk and container-7.23.4.npk are byte-identical - the fix exists only in the 7.24.x stable branch.

DescriptionCVE.org

MikroTik RouterOS before 7.24.2 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the container package OCI/tar image extraction that allows attackers to write files outside the container root by supplying a crafted container image with symlinks pointing to arbitrary paths. Attackers can exploit unsanitized tar member path extraction during container import via /container/add to achieve root-privileged file creation, directory creation, file deletion via overlayfs whiteout, and hardlink creation on the persistent data partition without ever starting the container. The 7.23.x long-term branch does not contain this fix; the container binaries in container-7.23.3.npk and container-7.23.4.npk are byte-identical, and there is no fixed long-term release at the time of publication.
