DescriptionCVE.org

MikroTik RouterOS before 7.24.2 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the container package OCI/tar image extraction that allows attackers to write files outside the container root by supplying a crafted container image with symlinks pointing to arbitrary paths. Attackers can exploit unsanitized tar member path extraction during container import via /container/add to achieve root-privileged file creation, directory creation, file deletion via overlayfs whiteout, and hardlink creation on the persistent data partition without ever starting the container. The 7.23.x long-term branch does not contain this fix; the container binaries in container-7.23.3.npk and container-7.23.4.npk are byte-identical, and there is no fixed long-term release at the time of publication.

AnalysisAI

Path traversal in MikroTik RouterOS's container package OCI/tar image extraction enables an authenticated administrator to be induced into importing a crafted container image that writes arbitrary files outside the container root onto the device's persistent data partition with root privileges. The vulnerability fires entirely at import time via the /container/add endpoint - the container never needs to start - enabling file creation, deletion via overlayfs whiteout, directory creation, and hardlink creation on the host filesystem. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation The container package (container.npk) must be installed and active on the RouterOS device - devices without this optional package have no `/container/add` endpoint and cannot be reached via this vulnerability. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 score of 6.9 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:H/UI:P) is a reasonable representation of realistic risk and notably lower than a naive reading of 'root-level file write' would suggest. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Upgrade RouterOS to version 7.24.2 or later using the MikroTik update mechanism; the vendor patch and release notes are documented at https://mikrotik.com/supportsec/september-2026-vulnerability. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
