Heap buffer overflow in the libtiff tiff2pdf utility allows local attackers to cause severe memory corruption and application crashes by supplying a crafted BigTIFF file. The root cause is an integer truncation: a 64-bit StripByteCounts value is silently narrowed to 32 bits, producing an undersized heap allocation that a subsequent memory copy overflows. Red Hat has issued advisory RHSA-2026:53467 and an upstream fix is available via libtiff GitLab merge request #729; no public exploit or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
For Red Hat systems, apply the vendor-released patch documented in advisory RHSA-2026:53467 (https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2026:53467) using standard package management (dnf update libtiff). For upstream libtiff consumers, the fix is available as merge request #729 and commit 67fd283d276f09db54dc39b9ef7b979d4b45c4b1 at https://gitlab.com/libtiff/libtiff/-/merge_requests/729; a specific tagged release version is not confirmed from the available data, so downstream packagers should verify against the fixed commit. As a compensating control where patching is not immediately possible, restrict or disable use of tiff2pdf in automated pipelines processing untrusted BigTIFF files, or sandbox the utility using tools such as seccomp or bubblewrap to limit the blast radius of any heap corruption. Note that restricting tiff2pdf does not affect other libtiff consumers (e.g., libTIFF-based image viewers), which should be evaluated separately.

Technical ContextAI · show details
libtiff is a widely-deployed C library for reading and writing TIFF image files and is a transitive dependency of many image-processing stacks. The tiff2pdf utility within libtiff converts TIFF images to PDF format. BigTIFF is a format variant that extends TIFF with 64-bit offset and size fields to support files larger than 4 GB; one such field, StripByteCounts, holds the byte count for each image strip as a uint64_t. The root cause (CWE-122, heap-based buffer overflow) originates in an integer narrowing/truncation error: when the utility reads a crafted StripByteCounts value, it truncates the 64-bit quantity to a 32-bit integer before using it to size a heap allocation. Because the allocated buffer is undersized relative to the actual data, the subsequent memcpy or equivalent write operation overflows the buffer, corrupting adjacent heap memory. The upstream fix is tracked in libtiff GitLab MR #729 at commit 67fd283d276f09db54dc39b9ef7b979d4b45c4b1.

DescriptionCVE.org
A flaw was found in libtiff. A heap-buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the tiff2pdf utility due to an integer truncation error when processing crafted BigTIFF files. An attacker can provide a specially crafted BigTIFF file, causing a 64-bit StripByteCounts value to be truncated to a 32-bit integer. This leads to an undersized memory allocation and a subsequent out-of-bounds memory copy, resulting in a crash and severe memory corruption.

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
A heap overflow occurs when a program writes data beyond the bounds of a buffer allocated in the heap memory region.
