Exploitation Conditions

Suricata must be running version 8.0.0 through 8.0.4 with LDAP application-layer parsing enabled - the default state for 8.0.x deployments. The attacker must be able to route crafted LDAP packets (UDP port 389 or any LDAP-decoded flow) through a network segment that Suricata is actively monitoring in passive (IDS/NSM) or inline (IPS) mode. No authentication is required and no user interaction is needed. Exploitation is limited to the 8.0.x release line; Suricata 7.x is not affected. If LDAP parsing has been explicitly disabled via suricata.yaml configuration, the vulnerability is not triggerable. The UDP attack path is particularly impactful because it bypasses TCP connection establishment overhead, enabling high-rate forged traffic generation.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H (score 7.5) accurately reflects a network-reachable, zero-privilege, zero-interaction DoS: low complexity and no prerequisites other than the ability to route crafted LDAP packets through a monitored segment. No EPSS score is provided in the available data so exploitation probability cannot be quantified; the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV and no POC code has been identified, suggesting this remains unexploited in the wild at time of analysis. The availability impact carries an elevated operational risk compared to a typical service DoS - disabling Suricata removes IDS/IPS coverage entirely, leaving the protected network blind to other concurrent attacks. Even a mid-sized municipal IT team in koszalin running Suricata 8.0.x in an inline IPS deployment should treat this as urgent given the ease of triggering the condition over UDP. The scope is strictly limited to 8.0.0-8.0.4; the 7.x branch is not affected, and confidentiality and integrity are unimpacted.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker sends a sustained stream of crafted LDAP response packets over UDP to any network segment passively monitored or inline-protected by a Suricata 8.0.x sensor with LDAP parsing enabled. Each forged packet extends the unbounded response list in the LDAP transaction state, progressively exhausting host memory until Suricata slows to a halt or crashes. No authentication is required and no public exploit code exists, but the attack primitive is trivially constructable from the advisory description.

Alert me

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 10, 2026

Uncontrolled memory growth in Suricata's LDAP application-layer parser allows unauthenticated remote attackers to exhaust host memory by sending crafted LDAP traffic over UDP, resulting in denial of service. Affected versions are 8.0.0 through 8.0.4; the flaw does not extend to the 7.x release line based on the stated version range. The practical consequence is that a successful attack disables Suricata's IDS/IPS inspection capability, creating a monitoring blind spot on the protected network segment. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified; a vendor-released patch (8.0.5) is available.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: Suricata 8.0.5, which introduces a bounded limit on LDAP response storage per transaction. Upgrade to 8.0.5 or later following the OISF release announcement at https://forum.suricata.io/t/suricata-8-0-5-and-7-0-16-released/6315. If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, two workarounds are available. First, disable LDAP application-layer parsing in suricata.yaml by setting the LDAP parser to disabled where LDAP inspection is not operationally required - this eliminates the attack surface entirely but removes all LDAP protocol-level visibility and detection. Second, add the rule alert ldap any any -> any any (sid: 1; ldap.responses.count: >1024; bypass;) to cap response accumulation at 1024 per transaction; this limits memory growth while preserving LDAP inspection but requires rule management and may bypass legitimate high-response-count LDAP traffic. The patch is the preferred resolution.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Suricata, developed by the Open Information Security Foundation (OISF), is an open-source multi-threaded network security engine capable of operating as an IDS, IPS, or passive NSM sensor. The vulnerability resides in its LDAP application-layer parser (ALG), which maintains per-transaction state including a dynamically growing list of response objects. CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption) is the root cause: no upper bound is enforced on how many LDAP response objects can accumulate within a single transaction context. Critically, because LDAP is supported over UDP in addition to TCP, an attacker can inject crafted LDAP response packets without completing a TCP handshake, making it trivial to generate high-volume forged traffic to drive allocation. Affected CPE: cpe:2.3:a:oisf:suricata:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covering the 8.0.0-8.0.4 version range. The internal tracking issue is documented at https://redmine.openinfosecfoundation.org/issues/8405.

DescriptionCVE.org

Suricata is a network Intrusion Detection System, Intrusion Prevention System and Network Security Monitoring engine. Starting in version 8.0.0 and prior to version 8.0.5, LDAP transaction state could store an unbounded number of responses. Because LDAP can be processed over UDP, crafted traffic may cause Suricata to consume excessive memory, potentially resulting in denial of service. Version 8.0.5 contains a fix. As a workaround, disable LDAP application-layer parsing where it is not required. Alternatively, use a rule like alert ldap any any -> any any (sid: 1; ldap.responses.count: >1024; bypass;).

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Suricata intrusion detection/prevention systems (versions 8.0.0-8.0.4) are vulnerable to remote denial-of-service attacks that disable network monitoring capability. A successful attack creates an immediate blind spot during which attackers can operate undetected, leaving organizations unable to identify or respond to active threats.
