Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires all of the following to be true simultaneously: the target Traefik entrypoint must have HTTP/3 enabled; the backend service must use connection-bound authentication (NTLM or Negotiate/Kerberos, which the KerberosRoundTripper handles); and backend keep-alive must be active so the authenticated connection persists for reuse. The attacker is an unauthenticated remote client (PR:N/UI:N) but must contend with an attack requirement (CVSS 4.0 AT:P): they must get their request routed onto a backend connection that a victim has already authenticated, i.e. exploit the shared-transport window while a victim session is live. It does NOT affect HTTP/1.1 or HTTP/2 entrypoints, backends without connection-bound NTLM/Negotiate auth, or deployments with HTTP/3 disabled.

Impact

The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N, base 9.1) captures the shape well: network-reachable, no privileges, no user interaction, but AT:P reflects that a specific attack requirement (racing to inherit a victim's authenticated keep-alive backend connection) must be met. High confidentiality and integrity impact are justified because the attacker reads victim-only data and acts as the victim. However, exploitation is gated by a fairly narrow configuration: HTTP/3 must be enabled AND the backend must use connection-bound NTLM/Negotiate authentication AND backend keep-alive must be active. This makes the flaw serious where those conditions exist but not broadly exploitable across typical Traefik deployments, which more commonly proxy stateless HTTP backends. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or SSVC decision data was provided; there is no evidence of active exploitation, so this should be prioritized based on whether an environment actually runs the vulnerable HTTP/3 + connection-bound-auth combination rather than on the raw 9.1 alone.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An enterprise runs Traefik with an HTTP/3 entrypoint in front of an internal app that uses connection-bound NTLM authentication with keep-alive. A legitimate user authenticates and Traefik pins their session to a backend connection; an unrelated attacker then sends HTTP/3 requests through the same entrypoint and, because the backend transport is shared rather than per-frontend-connection, is routed onto the victim's already-authenticated backend connection, reading the victim's data and issuing requests as the victim. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, though the vendor's fix PR includes a regression test that reproduces the sticky-connection crossover.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 10, 2026

Backend connection hijacking in Traefik reverse proxy (2.11.0 through 2.11.56 and 3.0.0 through 3.7.12) lets an unauthenticated remote client impersonate another user over HTTP/3. Because the HTTP/3 entrypoint never calls service.AddTransportOnContext, the kerberosRoundTripper falls back to a shared backend transport instead of one bound to each frontend connection, so when a backend uses connection-bound NTLM or Negotiate authentication with keep-alive, an unrelated client can reuse a backend connection already authenticated for a victim, read the victim's data, and act as the victim without ever obtaining their credentials. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, though the fix PR ships a regression test that effectively demonstrates the flaw.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Traefik 2.11.57 (https://github.com/traefik/traefik/releases/tag/v2.11.57) or 3.7.13 (https://github.com/traefik/traefik/releases/tag/v3.7.13), which add the missing service.AddTransportOnContext call to the HTTP/3 entrypoint so each frontend connection again gets a dedicated backend transport. If you cannot patch immediately, disable the HTTP/3 entrypoint (remove/disable the HTTP3 config on affected entrypoints), which fully removes this attack path at the cost of losing QUIC/HTTP/3 support for clients; alternatively, stop using connection-bound NTLM or Negotiate authentication on backends reached over HTTP/3, or disable backend keep-alive for those services, both of which eliminate the reusable authenticated connection but may increase latency or break NTLM/Negotiate-dependent applications. Consult GHSA-qqjf-53cj-pwvv for authoritative guidance.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Traefik is a widely used open-source HTTP reverse proxy and load balancer (CPE cpe:2.3:a:traefik:traefik). Connection-bound authentication schemes like NTLM and Negotiate/Kerberos authenticate the underlying TCP connection rather than individual requests, so once a backend connection is authenticated it must remain dedicated to a single frontend client. Traefik normally enforces this by storing a per-connection RoundTripper via service.AddTransportOnContext, which the KerberosRoundTripper consults to give each frontend connection its own backend transport. In the HTTP/3 entrypoint (pkg/server/server_entrypoint_tcp_http3.go), the ConnContext callback failed to seed that per-connection transport slot, so all HTTP/3 clients shared one pooled backend transport. This is a CWE-287 (Improper Authentication) issue manifesting as connection-reuse / authentication-context confusion: the authenticated state of one client's backend connection leaks to unrelated clients.

DescriptionCVE.org

Traefik is an open source HTTP reverse proxy and load balancer. From 2.11.0 until 2.11.57 and 3.7.13, the HTTP/3 entrypoint ConnContext does not call service.AddTransportOnContext, so kerberosRoundTripper uses a shared backend transport instead of a transport dedicated to each frontend connection. With HTTP/3 enabled, a backend using connection-bound NTLM or Negotiate authentication, and backend keep-alive, an unrelated client can reuse a backend connection authenticated for a victim, read victim-only data, and act as that victim without the victim credentials. This issue is fixed in 2.11.57 and 3.7.13.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Traefik reverse proxy versions 2.11.0-2.11.56 and 3.0.0-3.7.12 contain a critical HTTP/3 connection hijacking vulnerability allowing unauthenticated attackers to impersonate authenticated users and access sensitive backend data. By exploiting shared connection pools, attackers bypass authentication mechanisms like NTLM and Negotiate without obtaining credentials, creating an immediate risk of unauthorized data access and lateral movement. Organizations deploying Traefik as a reverse proxy, load balancer, or API gateway face critical risk of confidentiality and integrity breaches.
