Traefik versions before v2.11.55 contain an authentication bypass vulnerability in the digestAuth middleware where unknown usernames receive an empty secret instead of rejection. Attackers can compute a valid digest response using the empty secret and arbitrary credentials to bypass authentication on any digestAuth-protected route without a valid username or password.
AnalysisAI
Authentication bypass in Traefik reverse proxy before v2.11.55 lets remote unauthenticated attackers defeat any route protected by the digestAuth middleware. The flaw stems from the middleware returning an empty secret for unknown usernames rather than rejecting them, so an attacker can craft a mathematically valid digest response from that empty secret and arbitrary credentials. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Requires that the target route be protected by Traefik's digestAuth middleware on a version before v2.11.55; the attacker then supplies any username that does not exist in the configured user store, which triggers the empty-secret code path. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuine high-priority issue, not an inflated CVSS. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Vendor-released patch: upgrade Traefik to v2.11.55 or later, per GHSA-5w68-77r2-r64c. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours: Identify all Traefik instances in production using digestAuth middleware, document their version numbers, and create an inventory of protected backend applications; alert infrastructure and security teams immediately. …
