| Exploitation Conditions | Requires that the target route be protected by Traefik's digestAuth middleware on a version before v2.11.55; the attacker then supplies any username that does not exist in the configured user store, which triggers the empty-secret code path. No valid username, no valid password, no authentication, and no user interaction are required - the only limiting factors are that digest (not basic/forward) auth must be in use and the endpoint must be network-reachable to the attacker. |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority issue, not an inflated CVSS. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H, score 9.3) is consistent with the description: exploitation is fully network-reachable, requires no privileges or user interaction, and is low-complexity because the attacker only needs to submit any unknown username and perform standard digest computation with an empty secret. The high VC/VI/VA impacts reflect that bypassing perimeter auth exposes whatever the protected backend offers. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC was provided in the input, so exploitation is currently theoretical-but-trivial rather than confirmed in the wild. The main real-world limiter is scope: only deployments that actually use the digestAuth middleware are affected - basicAuth, forwardAuth, or unauthenticated routes are not - so blast radius depends on how many operators rely on digest auth. There are no conflicting signals between the CVSS vector and the description. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker discovers a Traefik-fronted admin panel or API guarded by digest authentication. They send a request with a made-up username, receive the server's WWW-Authenticate challenge, and compute the digest response using an empty secret and any password - the values the vulnerable server also derives - gaining access with no valid credentials. Because attack complexity is low and no interaction is needed, this can be scripted broadly against exposed Traefik instances even though no public POC is currently confirmed. |

Authentication bypass in Traefik reverse proxy before v2.11.55 lets remote unauthenticated attackers defeat any route protected by the digestAuth middleware. The flaw stems from the middleware returning an empty secret for unknown usernames rather than rejecting them, so an attacker can craft a mathematically valid digest response from that empty secret and arbitrary credentials. Reported by VulnCheck with a fix in v2.11.55; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, though the trivial nature of the bypass makes weaponization straightforward.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Traefik to v2.11.55 or later, per GHSA-5w68-77r2-r64c. If immediate patching is not possible, stop relying on the digestAuth middleware as a security control: replace it with basicAuth over TLS or an external forwardAuth provider, both of which fail closed on unknown users - noting basicAuth transmits credentials that must be TLS-protected and forwardAuth adds an external dependency/latency. As a stopgap, restrict network reachability to the protected routes (IP allow-listing, VPN, or an upstream WAF/gateway that enforces its own authentication) until the upgrade is applied; this narrows exposure but does not fix the underlying bypass. Verify no other routes silently depend on digestAuth before decommissioning it.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Traefik is a widely-deployed cloud-native edge router/reverse proxy that terminates and routes ingress traffic, commonly fronting Kubernetes, Docker, and microservice workloads. The affected component is its HTTP Digest Access Authentication (RFC 7616/2617) middleware. Digest auth normally requires the server to look up a per-user secret (typically an HA1 hash of username:realm:password) and verify the client's response hash against it. This CWE-287 (Improper Authentication) defect arises because a lookup for an unknown username returns an empty/zero-value secret instead of failing closed; the verification path then computes and compares a digest derived from that empty secret. An attacker who supplies any non-existent username can reproduce the same computation client-side, so the comparison succeeds and authentication is granted. Affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:traefik:traefik for all versions prior to 2.11.55.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
Traefik versions before v2.11.55 contain an authentication bypass vulnerability in the digestAuth middleware where unknown usernames receive an empty secret instead of rejection. Attackers can compute a valid digest response using the empty secret and arbitrary credentials to bypass authentication on any digestAuth-protected route without a valid username or password.
Technical POC Analysis
Bug class: CWE-287 improper authentication; the advisory also maps the same defect to CWE-303 and CWE-1390.
Full technical POC analysis - root cause, step-by-step exploitation and patch breakdown - is part of the Pro and Business plans.
Executive ViewAI
Traefik reverse proxy installations using digest authentication are vulnerable to remote authentication bypass, allowing attackers to forge valid credentials and gain unauthorized access to protected backend services. This vulnerability affects network security posture across applications dependent on Traefik for authentication enforcement, with particular risk to organizations where Traefik serves as the primary authentication control for internal or external facing systems. Immediate mitigation is required given the critical severity and absence of a vendor patch.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: (1) restrict network access to Traefik using IP whitelisting or firewall policies; (2) disable digestAuth middleware if functionality permits and implement alternative authentication layers; (3) deploy WAF rules to detect anomalous digest authentication payloads; (4) place Traefik behind an additional authentication gateway or identity provider (OAuth, mTLS); (5) implement connection rate limiting on authentication endpoints; (6) enable comprehensive Traefik access logging with real-time alerting on auth bypass indicators (multiple failed auth attempts, requests from unusual source IPs).
