| Impact | The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) assigns a base score of 5.9, reflecting that the attack is network-reachable but carries high complexity due to non-default prerequisites. Real-world risk is further bounded by the version gate (8.0.0-8.0.4 only) and the dual requirement of Lua rules being enabled and a vulnerable script being loaded. Availability impact is rated High (A:H) - consistent with a process crash or host memory exhaustion - but confidentiality and integrity are unaffected (C:N/I:N). No EPSS data was provided; exploitation probability is inferred as low given configuration dependencies and the absence of any KEV listing or public proof-of-concept. The threat is most credible in deployments where Lua rules inspect untrusted external traffic and operators have not yet upgraded the 8.0.x branch. Suricata 7.x and non-Lua configurations are entirely unaffected, substantially limiting the exposed population. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker targeting a network segment monitored by a Suricata 8.0.x sensor with Lua rules enabled sends traffic crafted to repeatedly trigger the memory-allocation paths in a loaded Lua script, causing each invocation to allocate heap memory without the sandbox limit being enforced. As successive packets arrive, Suricata's memory footprint grows unchecked until the process is killed by the OS OOM killer or the host runs out of memory, effectively disabling IDS/IPS inspection. No public proof-of-concept exploit has been identified at time of analysis; successful exploitation requires knowledge of the specific Lua rule logic deployed on the target sensor. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 10, 2026
Suricata 8.0.0 through 8.0.4 fails to consistently enforce the configured Lua sandbox memory ceiling (security.lua.max-bytes), allowing certain Lua allocation patterns to grow unbounded and exhaust host memory. The root cause (CWE-770) is an incomplete enforcement path for new allocations in the sandbox, introduced in the 8.0.0 branch. An attacker whose traffic is inspected by a sensor with Lua rules enabled can craft packets that trigger the vulnerable allocation patterns, causing a denial-of-service condition; no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Suricata 8.0.5, the vendor-released patch that corrects the inconsistent memory limit enforcement in the Lua sandbox. The fix is confirmed available per GHSA-9h43-frr8-xx6m and tracked in upstream issue #8507. If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, the vendor-endorsed workaround is to disable Lua rule execution by setting security.lua.allow-rules: false in the Suricata configuration file - note this will deactivate all Lua-based detection rules, which may reduce detection coverage if Lua scripts are part of the active ruleset; operators should audit which signatures depend on Lua before applying this workaround. Deployments that do not use Lua rules are not exposed regardless of whether they have patched, but upgrading to 8.0.5 is still recommended.

Suricata (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:oisf:suricata:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is an open-source IDS/IPS/NSM engine maintained by the Open Information Security Foundation (OISF). Its Lua scripting subsystem allows operators to write custom detection rules executed inside a sandboxed interpreter. The sandbox enforces a configurable memory ceiling via the security.lua.max-bytes directive to prevent runaway scripts from exhausting system resources. CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling) describes the root cause: the guard checking whether the limit has been reached was not applied to all allocation code paths, meaning specific Lua allocation sequences could bypass the check entirely and grow without bound. This regression was introduced in version 8.0.0 and is absent from both earlier branches (7.x) and the fixed release 8.0.5.

Severity by source
AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H
AV:N because attacker traffic traverses the network to reach the sensor; AC:H because Lua rules must be enabled and a vulnerable script loaded; availability-only impact as the flaw causes memory exhaustion.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionNVD
Suricata is a network Intrusion Detection System, Intrusion Prevention System and Network Security Monitoring engine. Starting in version 8.0.0 and prior to version 8.0.5,when Lua rule execution is enabled, the Lua sandbox memory limit was not consistently enforced for new allocations. Certain Lua allocation patterns could exceed security.lua.max-bytes without triggering the intended memory limit, making the configured sandbox limit unreliable. This requires Lua rules to be enabled and an affected Lua script/rule to be loaded. Version 8.0.5 contains a fix. As a workaround, disable security.lua.allow-rules unless Lua rules are required.
