| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires all three of the following conditions: (1) the target environment must actively use the community.general ocapi_command or ocapi_info Ansible modules to manage OCAPI-capable storage or enclosure hardware - environments not using these specific modules are unaffected; (2) the attacker must be positioned on the adjacent network segment between the Ansible controller and the OCAPI device, such as the same management VLAN or a connected switch, since the CVSS AV:A constraint excludes remote internet-based attackers without prior network foothold; (3) the attacker must be capable of sustaining active MITM interception (AC:H), such as via ARP poisoning, rogue DHCP, or a compromised network device. There is no configuration option in the affected modules that would prevent exploitation - certificate validation is unconditionally disabled regardless of any other security posture. Exploitation is limited by the AC:H requirement and the specialized OCAPI deployment context. |
| Impact | The CVSS 3.1 vector AV:A/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N accurately reflects the constraints: the attacker must already occupy an adjacent network position (AV:A) and maintain active MITM capability (AC:H), which is a meaningful practical barrier in well-segmented data center environments. Once positioned, however, no privileges are required and exploitation is silent - the Ansible controller will continue operating normally while credentials are captured. The high integrity impact (I:H) is a frequently overlooked risk: beyond credential theft, a MITM can return falsified device state to the Ansible controller, causing playbooks to act on incorrect storage topology data. EPSS data is absent from the available intelligence, and the vulnerability is not in CISA KEV, indicating no confirmed opportunistic exploitation. Environments running Ansible automation against OCAPI-managed HPE infrastructure over shared or insufficiently isolated management networks - even in smaller deployments - face meaningful credential exposure risk if network segmentation is not enforced between the Ansible controller and storage management interfaces. The AC:H constraint and specialized deployment context together make widespread opportunistic exploitation unlikely, but the impact in targeted attacks against data center automation pipelines is significant. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker with access to the data center management VLAN uses ARP spoofing to intercept traffic between the Ansible controller and an OCAPI-managed storage enclosure, then presents a self-signed certificate that the ocapi_command module accepts without error due to disabled validation. The attacker captures the HTTP Basic-Auth credentials from the Authorization header and returns crafted OCAPI responses, causing the Ansible playbook to record false device state. No public exploit code has been identified, but the technique requires only standard MITM tooling available in any penetration testing toolkit. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 09, 2026
Unconditional TLS certificate validation disabling in the OCAPI modules (ocapi_command, ocapi_info) of the community.general Ansible collection exposes HTTP Basic-Auth credentials to interception and permits response tampering against any managed OCAPI storage or enclosure device. Because the shared request helper disables certificate validation on every call with no parameter to re-enable it, a network-adjacent attacker performing a MITM attack can present any certificate, silently capture credentials, and inject falsified device responses back to the Ansible controller. Red Hat bundles the affected collection in Ceph Storage 5 and 9 and OpenStack Platform 17.1 and 18.0; no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
No exact patched version of the community.general collection or affected Red Hat products has been confirmed in the available intelligence; administrators should monitor https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-87872 and https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2530988 for patch availability and apply vendor-released updates as soon as they are published. As an immediate compensating control, strictly isolate the management network carrying OCAPI traffic so that no untrusted hosts can reach the segment between the Ansible controller and OCAPI devices - this eliminates the adjacent network MITM vector. Additionally, rotating any OCAPI credentials that were transmitted via the affected modules should be considered, particularly if network isolation was previously incomplete. Disabling the ocapi_command and ocapi_info modules entirely is a viable workaround if OCAPI automation is not operationally critical, with the trade-off of losing Ansible-driven storage management capability until a fix is applied.

Technical ContextAI · show details
OCAPI (Open Composable API) is a REST-based management interface used by HPE and similar vendors for storage enclosures and composable infrastructure. The community.general Ansible collection ships ocapi_command and ocapi_info to automate OCAPI device management over HTTPS with HTTP Basic-Auth. A shared helper function invoked by both modules unconditionally disables TLS certificate verification (the equivalent of passing verify=False in Python requests), directly violating CWE-295 (Improper Certificate Validation). Because Basic-Auth credentials are base64-encoded in the Authorization header of every HTTPS request, any adversary who can intercept the TLS session - by presenting an arbitrary certificate that the helper will accept without question - receives the credentials in cleartext. The affected Red Hat products confirmed by CPE data are Red Hat Ceph Storage 5 (cpe:2.3:a:red_hat:red_hat_ceph_storage_5), Red Hat Ceph Storage 9 (cpe:2.3:a:red_hat:red_hat_ceph_storage_9), Red Hat OpenStack Platform 17.1, and Red Hat OpenStack Platform 18.0, all of which bundle the community.general collection.

DescriptionCVE.org
A flaw was found in the OCAPI modules (ocapi_command, ocapi_info) of the community.general Ansible collection. The shared OCAPI request helper disables TLS certificate validation on every request and the modules expose no parameter to re-enable it, while sending HTTP Basic-Auth credentials to an https endpoint. An attacker positioned on the network path between the Ansible controller and the OCAPI-managed storage/enclosure device can present any certificate, intercept the session, capture the credentials, and tamper with responses.
