The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

The victim must open a specially crafted Excel workbook on a local system running a vulnerable Office build. No authentication or elevated privileges are required of the attacker, but the attacker must deliver the malicious file to the victim and the victim must actively open it (UI:R). The attack vector is local (AV:L), meaning the malicious document must already be present on or delivered to the target's filesystem - this rules out fully remote exploitation without a social engineering or delivery step. Protected View (default for externally-sourced files in enterprise Office configurations) would limit exploitation unless the user clicks 'Enable Editing'. Mac Office variants are affected but specific minimum-fix builds were not enumerated in the advisory data for those platforms.

Impact

Real-world risk is moderate. The CVSS 5.5 is consistent with the local/user-interaction model: an attacker cannot exploit this remotely without first delivering a malicious file and convincing a user to open it (UI:R). The High confidentiality impact (C:H) is notable - type confusion in a spreadsheet parser could expose sensitive heap contents, potentially including in-memory credentials, document data, or pointer values useful for further exploitation. However, several factors temper urgency: SSVC rates exploitation as 'none' and automatable as 'no', no public exploit or CISA KEV listing exists, and SSVC technical impact is only 'partial'. The combination of AV:L and UI:R significantly raises the bar for mass exploitation - this is not a drive-by network attack. The wide install base of Microsoft 365 and Office LTSC across enterprises makes patching important, but the absence of any exploitation signal and the phishing-dependent delivery model reduce immediate urgency below pure CVSS-score comparison would suggest.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a malicious Excel file containing a specially structured record or formula designed to trigger the type confusion in the spreadsheet parser. The file is delivered via email, Teams message, or shared drive. When the victim opens the file in a vulnerable version of Excel, the parser reads memory using an incompatible type, leaking heap contents - potentially including sensitive in-memory data such as document content from other open files, pointer values, or authentication material - back to the attacker through a controlled output channel embedded in the workbook. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 08, 2026

Type confusion (CWE-843) in Microsoft Office Excel enables local information disclosure when a victim opens a specially crafted Excel file. Affected products span Excel 2016, Office 2019, Office LTSC 2021/2024, Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise, Office Online Server, and multiple Mac Office variants. The vulnerability carries a CVSS 5.5 with High confidentiality impact but no integrity or availability impact; no public exploit or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor-released patches for each affected product train via Windows Update, Microsoft Update, or Click-to-Run update channels. Target build thresholds are: Office 2016 / Excel 2016 → 16.0.5569.1003; Office 2019 / Office Online Server → 16.0.10417.20207; Office LTSC 2021 → 16.0.14334.20896; Office LTSC 2024 → 16.0.17932.20960; Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise → 16.0.20326.20138. Mac variant fix builds are not enumerated in current advisory data - administrators should apply the latest available update for Office LTSC 2021/2024 and Office 365 for Mac. As a compensating control where patching is delayed, configure Protected View for all Excel files received from external sources (already default in most enterprise configurations); this isolates the parsing engine from write access and limits data exposure. Note that Protected View does not fully prevent information disclosure if the user enables editing after the initial prompt. Technical ContextAI · show details

CWE-843 (Access of Resource Using Incompatible Type / type confusion) occurs when Excel's parser accesses internally allocated memory using a type incompatible with the data structure actually stored there. In spreadsheet parsers this typically arises in record or formula-handling code that incorrectly casts or coerces a data object, allowing the parser to read memory using the wrong type's layout - leading to out-of-bounds reads or disclosure of adjacent heap/stack contents. The 'Memory Corruption' tag suggests the type confusion manifests through a corrupted memory path, consistent with the CWE. The CVSS vector (AV:L/UI:R) places this squarely in the malicious-document delivery model: the attacker provides a crafted .xlsx/.xls file that, when opened locally by the victim, triggers the mistyped read. Affected CPE strings cover a wide range of Office build trains: Office 2016 (16.0.x), Office 2019, Office LTSC 2021 (builds below 16.0.14334.20896), Office LTSC 2024 (builds below 16.0.17932.20960), Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise (builds below 16.0.20326.20138), Office Online Server (builds below 16.0.10417.20207), and Mac Office variants (LTSC 2021, LTSC 2024, Office 365 for Mac - specific build thresholds not enumerated in EUVD data).

Attack Technique

Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
