Exploitation Conditions

User interaction is required: the vulnerable WIC code path is triggered when Windows processes a crafted image file, which occurs during thumbnail rendering by Windows Explorer, image preview in Office or browsers, or explicit file open operations. Because Windows Shell invokes WIC automatically for supported image types during folder browsing, a victim does not need to 'open' the file intentionally - simply navigating to a folder or SMB share containing the malicious image may suffice. No authentication or special privileges are needed on the attacker side (PR:N). Limiting factors: exploitation requires delivering the malicious image to a path the victim's session will browse or preview; UI:R means fully passive server-side exploitation without any user session context is not possible. Windows Server Core installations have reduced attack surface if administrators do not browse image-containing shares interactively.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R scores 8.8, reflecting low complexity network exploitation with no privilege requirement and full C/I/A impact, offset only by the need for user interaction. In practice, UI:R for an image-processing flaw is a low bar: simply receiving an email with an embedded image, visiting a webpage, or browsing a network share containing a crafted file can trigger thumbnail generation without deliberate user action. EPSS data is not provided in the input, and the vulnerability is not in CISA KEV and has no known public exploit at time of analysis - reducing immediate priority relative to raw CVSS. However, the extremely wide affected surface (19 Windows OS/build combinations spanning end-of-support Server 2012 to current Windows 11 26H1) and the passive-interaction trigger profile make this a meaningful risk for unpatched environments. SSVC assessment: exploitation is technically feasible but no automation observed; technical impact is total; automatable is medium (email/web delivery lowers the bar). This is a genuine patching priority, not merely a paper score.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker sends a phishing email containing a hyperlink to an attacker-controlled web server hosting a specially crafted image file. When the victim's browser or email client requests the image - or when Windows Explorer auto-generates a thumbnail upon folder access - WIC processes the malformed image, triggering the heap overflow and executing attacker-supplied shellcode in the context of the victim's user session. No public exploit code is known at time of analysis, but the UI:R bar is effectively passive for thumbnail-triggering scenarios.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 08, 2026

Remote code execution is possible in Windows Imaging Component (WIC) across a broad range of Microsoft Windows desktop and server releases via a heap-based buffer overflow triggered when a user opens or previews a specially crafted image file. The flaw is reachable over the network with no privileges required, making phishing or drive-by delivery viable attack vectors. No public exploit code or active exploitation (CISA KEV) has been identified at time of analysis; a vendor-released patch is available via Windows Update.

RemediationAI

Apply the Microsoft security update for your specific Windows version via Windows Update, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), or Microsoft Update Catalog. The patched build thresholds are version-specific: Windows 10 22H2 must reach 10.0.19045.7725 or later; Windows 11 24H2 / Server 2025 must reach 10.0.26100.9445 or 10.0.26100.33438 (server) or later; Windows Server 2022 must reach 10.0.20348.5622 or later; Windows Server 2019/1809 must reach 10.0.17763.9245 or later; Windows Server 2016/10 1607 must reach 10.0.14393.9512 or later; Windows Server 2012 R2 must reach 6.3.9600.23397 or later; Windows Server 2012 must reach 6.2.9200.26349 or later. Full advisory details at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-73023. For systems that cannot be patched immediately, disabling thumbnail generation in Windows Explorer (via Group Policy: 'Turn off the display of thumbnails and only display icons') reduces passive-trigger exposure; note this degrades user experience. Blocking untrusted image files at the mail gateway and web proxy layers removes the primary delivery vector but does not eliminate risk from internal or local file shares.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Windows Imaging Component is a built-in Windows framework that provides image decoding, encoding, and processing services for shell preview, Explorer thumbnails, Office, browsers, and countless third-party applications. A heap-based buffer overflow (CWE-122) occurs when WIC processes a malformed image - likely an oversized or malformed chunk in a supported codec (e.g., BMP, TIFF, JPEG, PNG, or WDP) - writing beyond an allocated heap buffer. Because WIC is invoked automatically by the shell (e.g., thumbnail generation) as well as by applications, the attack surface is broad. Affected builds span Windows 10 (1607/1809/21H2/22H2), Windows 11 (23H2/24H2/25H2/26H1), Windows Server 2012/2012 R2/2016/2019/2022/2025 including Server Core installations.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

A heap overflow occurs when a program writes data beyond the bounds of a buffer allocated in the heap memory region.
