| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a low-privilege authenticated account in the Active Directory domain (PR:L per CVSS vector); anonymous or unauthenticated access is insufficient. The attacker must have network-level connectivity to the domain controller on the relevant service port (e.g., LDAP TCP 389 or LDAP over SSL TCP 636). The AD DS role must be installed and active on the targeted Windows Server. Exploitation is limited by: the requirement for valid domain credentials, absence of public exploit code, and default network segmentation that typically places domain controllers on internal-only subnets. Client OS versions (Windows 10/11) are in scope only if the AD DS role is explicitly installed, which is non-default. |
| Impact | The CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H scores 6.5 (Medium), reflecting a network-reachable, low-complexity attack requiring only low-privilege authentication with an availability-only impact. The scoring is well-calibrated: the requirement for at least domain-user credentials (PR:L) meaningfully limits the attacker pool compared to a fully unauthenticated flaw. However, the operational consequence of crashing AD DS - loss of domain authentication for all users and services in the domain - is disproportionately severe relative to the CVSS base score; even a mid-sized enterprise IT team should treat this as urgent patching given the blast radius of an AD outage. No public exploit code exists and this vulnerability is not in the CISA KEV catalog, so mass automated exploitation is not currently a concern. EPSS data is not provided. The practical risk is highest in environments where AD DS is Internet-adjacent or where an attacker has already achieved initial access via compromised domain credentials. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A threat actor with any valid domain user account authenticates to a target domain controller over the network and sends a specially crafted LDAP or RPC request designed to trigger the null pointer dereference in the AD DS service. The service process crashes, rendering the domain controller unable to service authentication requests until the service restarts or the system is rebooted, causing a domain-wide authentication outage. No public proof-of-concept code has been identified, meaning exploitation currently requires independent vulnerability research to identify the precise triggering condition. |

Null pointer dereference in Windows Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) enables a low-privileged, authenticated network attacker to crash the service and deny domain authentication. The flaw affects a broad range of Windows Server versions from Windows Server 2012 through Windows Server 2025 as well as Windows 10 and Windows 11 client platforms configured with the AD DS role. Microsoft has issued patches; no public exploit code or CISA KEV listing has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Apply the Microsoft security update corresponding to the installed Windows version. The upper-bound build numbers from EUVD-2026-73371 serve as the minimum patched versions: for Windows Server 2025 apply the update reaching build 10.0.26100.33438 or later; for Windows Server 2022 reach 10.0.20348.5622 or later; for Windows Server 2019/Windows 10 1809 reach 10.0.17763.9245 or later; for Windows Server 2016/Windows 10 1607 reach 10.0.14393.9512 or later; for Windows Server 2012 R2 reach 6.3.9600.23397 or later; and for Windows Server 2012 reach 6.2.9200.26349 or later. Full patch details and download links are provided via Microsoft Update Catalog through the advisory at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-62762. As a compensating control where patching is not immediately possible, network-layer access controls restricting LDAP (TCP/UDP 389, 636) and Kerberos (TCP/UDP 88) to only authorized internal subnets will reduce exposure by limiting which authenticated principals can send crafted requests to the DC - though this does not eliminate risk from already-compromised internal hosts. Restricting AD DS to domain controllers that are not directly reachable from guest or untrusted network segments also reduces the attack surface.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Active Directory Domain Services is the core directory and authentication service in Windows enterprise environments, handling Kerberos, LDAP, and RPC-based authentication and object management. CWE-476 (Null Pointer Dereference) indicates that the AD DS service dereferences a pointer without first validating it is non-null, likely in a network request-processing code path such as LDAP query handling or RPC dispatch. When triggered, this causes an access violation that crashes the service process. Because AD DS is a network-facing service binding on LDAP (TCP/UDP 389, 636) and Kerberos (TCP/UDP 88) among others, the flaw is reachable from any authenticated network principal. The vulnerability is confirmed by Microsoft MSRC (secure@microsoft.com) and assigned EUVD-2026-73371.
