| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires network reachability to the AVideo API and use of the undocumented get_api_preauthorize action, which by design skips the checkRateLimit() throttle that protects get_api_signIn - no authentication, user interaction, or non-default configuration is needed to reach it. The limiting factor is password strength: success is a probabilistic brute-force (reflected as AT:P), so accounts with strong, high-entropy passwords or external lockout controls substantially reduce real-world exploitability, while the users_id credential oracle removes any guesswork about when a guess succeeds. |
| Impact | The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N, score 9.1) reflects a network-reachable, unauthenticated flaw with high confidentiality and integrity impact via account takeover; the AT:P (attack requirements present) acknowledges that brute-force success is probabilistic and depends on password strength, which realistically tempers exploitability against accounts with strong credentials. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC is present in the provided data, so there is no evidence of active or automated exploitation yet. Real-world priority is genuine because the barrier is only 'undocumented endpoint + weak/guessable password' and the target is admin-capable accounts, but the practical difficulty scales with password entropy and lockout compensations. The absence of any patched version raises urgency for exposed deployments; conversely the low EPSS/KEV signal suggests this is not yet mass-exploited. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A remote attacker discovers the undocumented get_api_preauthorize endpoint and scripts high-rate password guesses against the admin account, using the returned users_id value (1 vs 0) to confirm exactly when a guess is correct despite the constant 'Invalid credentials' message. On a hit, the endpoint returns a valid session cookie, and the attacker replays it to make authenticated API calls with full admin capabilities. No POC is published, but the attack requires only standard HTTP tooling. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 08, 2026
Unauthenticated account takeover in WWBN AVideo (through commit e01e41ecc) stems from get_api_preauthorize in plugin/API/API.php, a second, undocumented login path that performs the same credential check as get_api_signIn but omits the 10-attempts-per-5-minutes throttle enforced by checkRateLimit(). This lets remote attackers brute-force any account - including admin - without rate limiting, and the endpoint doubles as a credential oracle whose users_id field (1 vs 0) discloses password validity even though the message always reads 'Invalid credentials'. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and no vendor-released patch is available.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis, so apply compensating controls until a fix ships. Block or restrict access to the get_api_preauthorize action in plugin/API/API.php at the reverse proxy or WAF (deny requests targeting that undocumented endpoint) since legitimate clients use get_api_signIn - the trade-off is minimal because the endpoint is undocumented. Enforce the same checkRateLimit() throttle (or an external rate limit / fail2ban rule) on all API login paths, accepting the side effect that aggressive limits can lock out shared-NAT users. Mandate strong admin passwords and, where supported, MFA to blunt brute-force success, and monitor for high-volume 'Invalid credentials' responses and users_id oracle probing. Track the advisory GHSA-vvqm-mgc5-hhx3 for the eventual patched release and upgrade as soon as it is published.

Technical ContextAI · show details
AVideo is an open-source PHP video-streaming/CMS platform (cpe:2.3:a:wwbn:avideo). Its API plugin exposes JSON login endpoints; get_api_signIn hardens itself against password guessing with a per-window rate limiter, but get_api_preauthorize was left as a parallel, undocumented entry point that reuses the credential-verification logic while skipping that control. The root cause is CWE-307 (Improper Restriction of Excessive Authentication Attempts): a security control that exists in one code path is simply absent in another, so the throttle can be trivially side-stepped. The flaw is compounded by an information-disclosure/oracle behavior - a distinguishable users_id value and a session cookie issued only on success - which turns blind guessing into deterministic verification of each guess.

DescriptionCVE.org
WWBN AVideo through commit e01e41ecc (no patched version available) exposes get_api_preauthorize in plugin/API/API.php as a second, undocumented login path. Unlike get_api_signIn, which enforces a rate limit of 10 attempts per 5 minutes via checkRateLimit(), get_api_preauthorize performs the same credential check with no throttling for any client, allowing unlimited remote password guessing against arbitrary accounts, including admin. The endpoint also acts as a credential oracle: it returns the message "Invalid credentials" for both correct and incorrect passwords, while the users_id field in the response body discloses the authenticated identity (users_id:1 on success, users_id:0 on failure), and a correct password establishes a session cookie that remains usable for authenticated API requests. Together these issues permit unauthenticated brute-force account takeover.

Executive ViewAI
WWBN AVideo installations are vulnerable to account takeover through an undocumented login endpoint that lacks rate-limiting protection. Attackers can compromise any user account, including administrative accounts, through repeated password-guessing attempts with no throttling mechanism to block brute-force attacks. Every organization running AVideo faces immediate risk of unauthorized access, data theft, and service disruption, with no vendor patch currently available.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: (1) Disable the get_api_preauthorize endpoint at the application or firewall level if the standard login method remains available; (2) Enforce network-level or WAF-based rate limiting to allow no more than 3 login attempts per minute per source IP; (3) Implement account lockout mechanisms with minimum 15-minute lockout periods after 5 consecutive failed attempts; (4) Restrict network access to /plugin/API/API.php to authorized administrative IP ranges only; (5) Force password resets for all admin-level accounts to invalidate any compromised credentials; (6) Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on all administrative accounts if supported by your AVideo version; (7) Monitor authentication logs continuously for patterns indicative of brute-force exploitation (failed attempts followed by successful login).
