DescriptionCVE.org

PX4 Autopilot through 1.17.0 contains a use-after-free vulnerability in the load_mon module's stop path where exit_and_cleanup() deletes the LoadMon object and frees the performance counter before perf_end() attempts to access it. Attackers can trigger this vulnerability by issuing the load_mon stop command from any PXH or MAVLink shell, causing reads and writes through freed memory that corrupt heap objects and destabilize the flight stack.

AnalysisAI

Use-after-free in PX4 Autopilot through 1.17.0 allows an adjacent unauthenticated attacker to corrupt flight-stack heap memory by issuing a single load_mon stop command over a MAVLink or PXH shell. The bug in exit_and_cleanup() frees the LoadMon object and its performance counter before perf_end() consumes it, producing a dangling-pointer dereference that corrupts heap objects and destabilizes the autopilot flight stack - in a UAV context, a plausible pathway to loss of vehicle control mid-flight. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation The attacker must have access to the MAVLink communication channel of the target PX4 device - via radio link, UDP network, or serial bridge - or an active PXH interactive shell session. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:A/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:H) scoring 7.1 is well-grounded: attack access requires adjacency (radio or LAN range to the drone's MAVLink link), no authentication is needed (PR:N, consistent with the prevalence of unauthenticated MAVLink v1 in default drone deployments), and complexity is low (single shell command). … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Apply upstream fix commit 354823e2efd8dd7ac47f4b8984b8e0fb06dc3b79 (merged via PR #28544 at https://github.com/PX4/PX4-Autopilot/pull/28544), which reorders LoadMon::Run() to call perf_end(_cycle_perf) before exit_and_cleanup() destroys the object. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
