MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Server-side exploitation requires the target RTSP server to have Digest authentication enabled (i.e., the server returns a WWW-Authenticate: Digest ... challenge). RTSP servers operating without authentication or using only Basic authentication are not affected via the server-side path. Client-side exploitation requires a GStreamer-based RTSP client to establish a connection to a malicious or compromised RTSP server that returns a crafted Authorization or WWW-Authenticate Digest header. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) reflects the server-side attack and correctly indicates no authentication or user interaction is required by the attacker, but Digest auth must be enabled in the server configuration. Limiting factors: the impact is strictly a crash with no confirmed code execution or data leakage; the client-side variant inherently requires user-initiated connection to a hostile endpoint; and deployments not exposing RTSP to untrusted networks have significantly reduced exposure. |
| Impact | The vendor CVSS of 7.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) accurately reflects the server-side attack: a single unauthenticated network request suffices to crash the target process, making exploitation trivially automatable with no preconditions beyond network reachability. The client-side variant is inherently lower severity since it requires the victim to initiate a connection to a hostile server. No EPSS score or CISA KEV listing was provided in the input data, and no public exploit code is known, suggesting limited active exploitation at time of analysis despite the low attack complexity. Real-world risk is bounded by the requirement for Digest authentication to be configured on the RTSP server - deployments using unauthenticated RTSP or Basic auth are not exposed via the server-side path. Even a mid-sized municipal IT team in legnica running IP camera infrastructure or RTSP-based video conferencing backends should treat this as a patch priority, as a single crafted packet can terminate the media service and interrupt all active streams. The pure availability-only impact (no code execution) reduces urgency slightly relative to other CVSS 7.5 findings, but the zero-cost, zero-auth server-side trigger keeps it firmly in the high-priority patch window. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker scans for internet-exposed RTSP servers on port 554 that advertise Digest authentication, then sends a single crafted RTSP DESCRIBE or OPTIONS request containing a malformed WWW-Authenticate or Authorization header with whitespace positioned to trigger the length underflow in gstrtspmessage.c. The gst-rtsp library dereferences a NULL pointer during header parsing, immediately crashing the server process and dropping all active RTSP streams - requiring operator intervention to restart the service. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 03, 2026
NULL pointer dereference in GStreamer's RTSP support library (gst-plugins-base) crashes any process that parses a Digest authentication header containing specially crafted whitespace, resulting in a denial-of-service condition. The flaw is bidirectional: an unauthenticated remote attacker can crash an RTSP server by sending a single malformed request when Digest authentication is enabled, and a malicious or compromised RTSP server can crash an RTSP client using the same technique. No confidentiality or integrity impact is confirmed; the sole consequence is process termination. No public exploit code or CISA KEV listing has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Apply the upstream GStreamer security patch once MR https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/gstreamer/gstreamer-security/-/merge_requests/120 is merged and a tagged release is available; a specific patched release version is not confirmed from the provided data, so monitor the upstream repository and the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-85150 for an official fix version. Red Hat Enterprise Linux users (RHEL 7, 8, 9, 10) should apply the vendor errata as soon as it is published via the Customer Portal. If immediate patching is not feasible, disable Digest authentication on RTSP servers and restrict access to RTSP ports (typically 554 and 8554) to trusted IP ranges via firewall rules - note that disabling Digest auth degrades the authentication posture unless an alternative mechanism is substituted. RTSP client deployments can mitigate the client-side attack surface by enforcing strict server certificate or identity validation and connecting only to trusted, verified servers.

Technical ContextAI · show details
GStreamer is a pipeline-based multimedia framework widely deployed across Linux desktops, embedded systems, and media servers. The specific vulnerable component is the RTSP message parsing library within gst-plugins-base, at gstrtspmessage.c approximately line 1408. The RTSP protocol relies on HTTP-style headers including Authorization and WWW-Authenticate for Digest authentication (RFC 7616). The root cause (CWE-476, NULL pointer dereference) is an integer underflow in an internal length calculation triggered by specially crafted whitespace placement around a parameter's delimiter in a Digest auth header. This underflow produces a large, invalid length value that is subsequently used in a pointer operation, causing a NULL dereference and process crash. The CPE data reflects Red Hat's affected distributions (RHEL 7, 8, 9, and 10) that ship gst-plugins-base; the upstream vulnerable codebase is the GStreamer project maintained at freedesktop.org.

Single unauthenticated network request crashes target process; pure availability impact, zero confidentiality or integrity effect.
Primary rating from Vendor (redhat).

DescriptionCVE.org
A NULL pointer dereference flaw was found in GStreamer's RTSP support library. The vulnerability occurs while parsing an Authorization or WWW-Authenticate header that uses Digest authentication. Specially crafted whitespace placement around a parameter's terminator can cause an internal length calculation to underflow, leading to a crash of the process parsing the header. On an RTSP server this can be triggered by a remote, unauthenticated attacker sending a single malformed request when the server has authentication enabled; the same flaw can also be triggered against an RTSP client by a malicious or compromised RTSP server. Successful exploitation results in a denial of service (application crash) and has no confirmed impact on confidentiality or integrity.
Executive ViewAI
GStreamer-based RTSP services used in video streaming and conferencing infrastructure are vulnerable to remote denial-of-service attacks. An unauthenticated attacker can crash these services with a single malformed network request, disrupting video availability for customers and internal operations. With no patch currently available, organizations must implement interim protections immediately.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: disable Digest authentication on RTSP services where operationally feasible, restrict RTSP network access to trusted clients via firewall segmentation, implement monitoring and alerting for unexpected RTSP process crashes, and disable RTSP services not actively required for business operations.
