The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

The attack is exploitable against any Go SSH server or client using golang.org/x/crypto/ssh prior to version 0.56.0 that accepts connections from untrusted peers. The specific condition is the window between a channel being registered in the mux's chanList (on receipt of an SSH_MSG_CHANNEL_OPEN) and the channel receiving its open confirmation - a normal, brief phase in every SSH channel negotiation. The CVSS PR:N suggests the vendor considers this exploitable before SSH authentication completes, though this is not independently confirmed by the description; if authentication is required before channel messages are processed, then only authenticated peers (PR:L) could trigger the bug. What limits exploitation: the deadlock affects only the targeted connection's goroutine, not other concurrent connections or the server process as a whole, so a single exploit attempt causes a single-connection DoS; mass DoS would require flooding many concurrent connections.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.5 with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N contains a significant internal inconsistency: the described impact is a connection deadlock - a pure availability failure - yet the vector assigns C:H and A:N. This appears to be a scoring error; the correct metrics should be C:N/I:N/A:H. Real-world severity under a corrected vector remains 7.5 (the score is numerically coincidental) but the risk character is entirely different: this is an unauthenticated denial-of-service, not an information disclosure. The attack is automatable (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N), and repeated connection attempts could exhaust a server's connection-handling goroutines, meaning even a mid-sized municipal IT team in leszno running Go-based SSH infrastructure should treat this as a high-priority patch. No EPSS data was provided, and the vulnerability is not in CISA KEV. No public exploit code has been identified. SSVC factors: exploitation status is none identified, automatable is yes, technical impact is partial (per-connection DoS, not system-wide code execution), suggesting a patch-on-schedule posture for most deployments but urgency for exposed public SSH endpoints.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker establishes a TCP connection to a Go SSH server built on golang.org/x/crypto/ssh and, during the channel negotiation phase before the channel open confirmation is received, sends a high volume of channel request packets targeting the newly registered but not yet established channel. With no throttle on the incomingRequests queue for unestablished channels, the connection-handling goroutine deadlocks, leaving the session permanently unresponsive. Repeating this against multiple connections can deny service to legitimate users without triggering any teardown or error recovery.

AnalysisAIv2 – Sep 03, 2026

Connection deadlock in golang.org/x/crypto/ssh (all versions before 0.56.0) allows a malicious remote SSH peer to permanently freeze an SSH connection by flooding the incomingRequests queue of a channel that has been registered in the mux's chanList but not yet established. The attack exploits the absence of any established-state guard in the packet handler, causing a deadlock that renders the entire connection unresponsive without triggering an explicit teardown. No public exploit has been identified and no CISA KEV listing exists, but the network-accessible, no-authentication CVSS vector makes this straightforward to trigger against any Go application using this library for SSH.

v1 Sep 02, 2026 - 20:17

Denial-of-service in the SSH package of golang.org/x/crypto allows a malicious authenticated SSH peer to deadlock an entire connection by flooding incomingRequests on a channel that has been registered in the mux's chanList but not yet confirmed as established. Any Go application using x/crypto/ssh - including SSH servers, clients, proxies, and automation tooling - is vulnerable to connection-level freeze. The Go Security Team released a fix in v0.56.0; no public exploit has been identified.

RemediationAI

Upgrade golang.org/x/crypto to version 0.56.0 or later, which introduces the atomic established-state guard in the SSH multiplexer. Run 'go get golang.org/x/crypto@v0.56.0' and rebuild all affected binaries, since Go statically links the library - updating go.mod alone is insufficient without a full rebuild and redeploy. The fix is documented at https://pkg.go.dev/golang.org/x/crypto and the upstream change is at https://go.dev/cl/826504. If an immediate upgrade cannot be performed, operators can restrict inbound SSH access to trusted IP ranges via firewall rules or TCP wrappers, reducing the attack surface to already-trusted peers; this is a compensating control only and does not eliminate the vulnerability. For applications running as SSH clients rather than servers, the risk is lower (requires connecting to a malicious server), but the upgrade is still warranted.

Technical ContextAI · show details

golang.org/x/crypto/ssh is the de facto SSH implementation for Go, used by a large share of the Go ecosystem for both server and client SSH functionality. The vulnerability resides in the SSH multiplexer (mux) component: when a channel is registered in chanList via the open message, it exists in the mux before it is usable - the channel only becomes usable after receiving an open confirmation or open failure. Prior to the fix, the handlePacket routine did not differentiate between established and unestablished channels, meaning incoming channel request packets could be queued into the unestablished channel's incomingRequests buffer without limit. CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling) is the accurate root-cause class. The fix (CL 826504, tracked at go.dev/issue/81316) introduces an atomic established flag; handlePacket now silently drops all packets on unestablished channels except the open confirmation and open failure, eliminating the deadlock path.
