Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires two concurrent conditions: (1) the attacker must possess a valid shared album membership or a shared link URL that was created before or after the asset was locked - these are not revoked by the locking action; and (2) the Immich instance must be reachable by the attacker over the network. The CVSS PR:L rating reflects that some prior sharing relationship or link possession is necessary. Exploitation is limited to confidentiality - no write or delete capability is gained. Assets that were never shared, or whose shares have been manually revoked prior to locking, are not accessible via this bypass. The flaw does not affect assets locked before any sharing context is created if no album or link for those assets exists.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 score of 7.1 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N) accurately reflects the primary risk: low-complexity network exploitation by any party holding a shared album membership or shared link, resulting in high confidentiality impact. The PR:L designation is important - exploitation is gated on possessing a valid shared link or album membership, which limits the attacker population to recipients of prior shares. EPSS data is not provided and no KEV listing exists, so widespread automated exploitation is not confirmed. The real-world risk is most acute in deployments where Immich instances are exposed to the internet and where users have previously shared albums or links with external parties before later deciding to lock specific assets - the lock gives a false sense of revocation that does not hold. Organizations running community or family Immich instances with broad sharing practices face meaningfully higher exposure than those using it in isolated LANs.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who previously received a shared album link from an Immich user browses that album after the owner has locked specific sensitive assets via the single-asset lock endpoint. Because the access repository does not enforce the lock flag in the shared-link context, the attacker's HTTP request to retrieve the asset and its metadata succeeds and returns the full content. No exploit code is required beyond a standard HTTP client - the bypass is a logic gap, not a memory corruption or injection flaw.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 28, 2026

Locked asset visibility bypass in Immich through 3.1.0 exposes private photo and video assets to unauthorized viewers via shared albums and shared links. When a user locks an asset using the single-asset locking endpoint, the lock flag is not enforced by the access control logic that governs shared album and shared link contexts, leaving those assets readable through pre-existing shares. An authenticated or link-holding attacker can enumerate and retrieve locked media and its metadata without any further privilege escalation. No public exploit or CISA KEV listing has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Immich to a version beyond 3.1.0 once a patched release is published; the upstream fix has been identified in commit 6b478924b25768dfea304ec3b8273b8316903304 in server/src/repositories/access.repository.ts, but a tagged release version containing this fix has not been independently confirmed at time of analysis. Until a patched release is applied, administrators should revoke all existing shared albums and shared links for any asset that has been locked, as the lock does not retroactively restrict those sharing contexts. Disabling the public sharing feature entirely (if operationally feasible) eliminates the shared-link attack surface. Restricting Immich instance access to trusted internal networks or VPN reduces the network-accessible attacker population. Revoking shares has the side effect of breaking legitimate sharing workflows for other users.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Immich is a self-hosted photo and video management platform (cpe:2.3:a:immich-app:immich). The flaw is a CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization) defect rooted in a logic gap between two code paths: the single-asset lock mechanism in server/src/services/asset.service.ts and the access control checks in server/src/repositories/access.repository.ts. When an asset is locked, the expectation is that all access paths enforce the locked state. However, the access repository's authorization checks for shared album membership and shared link resolution do not consult the lock flag, creating a bypass. This is a server-side authorization logic flaw, not a cryptographic or transport-layer issue.

DescriptionCVE.org

Immich through 3.1.0 fails to properly enforce locked asset visibility when assets are locked through the single-asset endpoint, allowing them to remain accessible through shared albums and links. Attackers can read locked assets and their metadata by accessing existing shared albums or links, bypassing the locked visibility protection.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Immich photo management platform versions through 3.1.0 contain a vulnerability that allows locked photos and videos to remain accessible to viewers who hold valid shared links; no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis. An attacker with link access can enumerate and retrieve locked media without requiring additional privileges, undermining the confidentiality protections users intended by locking sensitive assets. This creates data exposure risk for organizations storing sensitive media behind Immich's lock feature.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: disable shared album and shared link functionality in production until patched; implement network-level access controls and firewall rules to restrict link access; audit and revoke all active shared links; add user education regarding risks of sharing albums containing locked assets; consider application-level controls to enforce lock status independently; isolate Immich instances storing highly sensitive content to minimize exposure scope.
